fix(mpi): 🐛 do not fail a completed partition barrier round on a later poison - #433
Under the MPI hybrid transport (several ranks × several partitions per rank), a call that should raise a Python exception could intermittently kill the whole MPI job with MPI_Abort. #431's CI hit it in the ranks2-partitions2 leg, in test_heisenberg_absent_term_raises[comm_world].
Root cause.PartitionBarrier::sync() re-checked the poison flag after its round had been released.
In term_expectation_values for an absent term, every partition throws right after the hybrid allreduce. If one sibling threw first, its poison made a partition that had already completed the collective fail it anyway with ShmCommPoisoned.
On a single rank, PartitionGroup::run_on_all already reported the real exception, which masked the problem.
Under the hybrid, partition 0 runs inside guard_partition0_, which turns any exception into MPI_Abort, by design, so that peer ranks blocked in MPI don't hang.
Local reproduction: 2 ranks × 4 partitions on the whole test_term_expectation_values.py file under CPU load failed 2/17 runs. With -s, monoprop's abort message names the cause:
monoprop: rank 0 cannot complete the collective 'allreduce_sum_inplace'
(ShmComm poisoned: a peer partition threw during a collective) ...
MPI_ABORT was invoked on rank 0
Fix.sync() now throws only for a round that cannot complete.
When a waiter sees poison, it re-reads the barrier generation before failing.
A poisoner that left the round saw the generation advance (acquire) before it poisoned (release). So a waiter that observes the poison also observes the advance, and a completed round is never failed.
A failure still surfaces at the next round, because its poisoner never arrives there.
No collective in HybridComm or ShmComm reads a sibling's buffers after its final barrier, so returning normally from a completed round is safe.
Changes
cpp/monoprop/detail/mpi/PartitionBarrier.h: the last arriver returns without checking poison, and a waiter that sees poison re-checks the generation. Documented as the barrier's contract.
cpp/monoprop/detail/partition/PartitionGroup.h: the run_on_all comment no longer says that poison can reach a master whose collective completed.
cpp/tests/shm_comm_tests.cpp, two new cases, both failing before the fix:
partition_barrier_completed_round_ignores_later_poison: deterministic, the last arriver of a poisoned round returns normally.
shm_comm_poison_after_completed_collective_spares_siblings: 2000 repetitions of the real pattern on ShmComm (allreduce, then one partition poisons), with no MPI, so a failure can't kill the runner. Before the fix it failed within ~85–300 repetitions; after it, 5/5 runs pass.
cpp/tests/term_expectation_values_tests.cpp: comment updated to point at the new test.
Verification (local, Open MPI 5.0.11):
C++ serial 356/356 and MPI 5/5 variants.
All five Python MPI legs (just test-py-mpi).
The stress loop that reproduced the abort: 0/60 failures under load, across 2×4, 2×2 and 4×2 ranks × partitions (2/17 before the fix).
prek is clean.

Bug Fixes
Completed shared-memory collectives no longer fail because another participant poisons the communicator afterward. Poisoning is still detected by participants waiting on an incomplete round.
…r poison
PartitionBarrier::sync() threw ShmCommPoisoned whenever the poison flag was set after its round was released, so a partition that had completed a collective could still fail it when a sibling threw right afterwards. On a single rank run_on_all() reported the sibling's real exception, but under the MPI hybrid partition 0 turned the spurious ShmCommPoisoned into MPI_Abort, so a call that should raise (e.g. term_expectation_values for an absent term with 2 ranks x 2 partitions) intermittently killed the job. sync() now throws only for a round that cannot complete, re-reading the generation when it sees poison, since a poisoner that left the round saw it advance first. A deterministic barrier test and a stress test of the ShmComm pattern cover it; the latter failed within ~300 repetitions before.
Fixes#432
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
PartitionBarrier::sync now returns when a round has completed, including when a waiting participant observes poison after the generation advances. New tests cover poisoned barriers and repeated shared-memory all-reduces. Comments describe the completed-collective behavior.
The last participant returns after advancing the generation. Waiting participants reread the generation after observing poison and return if the round completed; otherwise, they throw ShmCommPoisoned.
Tests cover a poisoned one-party barrier and 2,000 repeated all-reduces for communicator sizes 2 and 4, with rank 1 poisoning after completion. Comments clarify when a completed collective exposes ShmCommPoisoned; the absent-term test itself is unchanged.
The barrier fix appears mergeable, but the reported race lacks deterministic waiter-side test coverage, leaving a bounded regression risk.

Explanation
For [#432], PartitionBarrier::sync() now returns for a completed round and rechecks gen_ before reporting poison. This prevents a sibling from failing a completed collective and reaching the MPI abort path. The new ShmComm stress test covers the allreduce-then-poison pattern for 2,000 repetitions with 2 and 4 partitions. The existing absent-term test remains the user-level error path. The reported MPI verification supports the expected RuntimeError behavior.

Add deterministic coverage for the waiter-side poison re-check.
partition_barrier_completed_round_ignores_later_poison uses one participant, so sync() returns through the last-arriver branch before reading poisoned_. run_comm_threads only starts and joins worker threads; it provides no synchronization point inside PartitionBarrier::sync(). The repeated all-reduce test can therefore pass without executing the re-check.
Add a test-only synchronization seam that pauses a waiter after loading the old generation and before reading poisoned_, then assert that it returns after the round completes and poison is set.

…penMP refactor
Bring in main since 794f239: MPI-enabled wheels across MPI ABI families (#426), named build
options (#421), meaningful MPI tests in every configuration (#431), the partition barrier fix
(#433), the HPC container image (#418), Python 3.15 (#395), pytest-mpi removal (#415), workflow
token permissions (#422) and dependency bumps.
- CMake: the core is compiled once per MPI ABI (monoprop_add_core_sources/_objects). OpenMP is
linked on monoprop-core-usage, monoprop and every monoprop_mpi_<abi>; hwloc is dropped from the
core and MPI libraries. The sharded, parallel and evolution sources register through the new
function, and the MPI failure driver links monoprop_CPP_TEST_OBJS.
- PartitionBarrier.h, PartitionGroup.h, the partition CMakeLists and the ShmComm/HybridComm tests
stay deleted, with main's hybrid-partition equivalence case.
- monoprop::monoprop is always serial: the link probe expects no MPI there and builds again,
expecting MPI, against every monoprop_mpi_<abi>; its two-rank T = 1/2 launches run the test
ABI. find_package_smoke reads the expectation from monoprop_SMOKE_MPI, and test-find-package
runs the MPI component on two ranks at T = 1 and 2.
- monoprop.has_mpi is gone on main: tests, probes and check-runtime read monoprop.MPI_ABIS, and
check-runtime also scans every _core_mpi file. The benchmark tooling keeps its has_mpi record
key, reads the build mode through preflight.build_has_mpi() (legacy builds included) and
hashes the extension it measures (preflight.measured_extension(): _core_mpi on a
communicator).
- comm=None now runs serially, so the sharded probe passes MPI.COMM_WORLD explicitly in an MPI
build, to its propagators and to the low-level controls.
- tests/mpi_support.py imports mpi4py only when MPI_ABIS is non-empty, so an MPI-off run never
initializes MPI.
- The ranks2-partitions2 Python MPI leg becomes ranks2-threads2 (monoprop_NUM_THREADS=2), and the
graph memory test runs at monoprop_NUM_THREADS=1 and 2 instead of monoprop_PARTITIONS.
- CI and wheels: libomp/OpenMP_ROOT alongside main's MPI wheel settings, the TSan job through
monoprop_SANITIZER, and no ldconfig step for hwloc on Linux.
- Docs: the MareNostrum5 guide places the OpenMP team with OMP_PLACES/OMP_PROC_BIND instead of
monoprop pinning partitions; building, testing and benchmarks follow the backend split. The
container keeps libhwloc-dev, which its PMIx and Open MPI builds need.
MPI-off Release: ctest 517/517, pytest 984 passed. MPI (Open MPI 5.0.11): ctest 526 serial and
49 MPI, pytest 1010 passed plus the sharded probe files, all five Python MPI legs, and
test-find-package with the MPI component. prek is clean.
