Summary

Follow-up to #418 after #426, which builds MPI per ABI family, loads the matching backend at run time and replaced monoprop.has_mpi with monoprop.MPI_ABIS.

  • Smoke test: a source build like the container's has a single MPI backend, for the ABI family of the MPI that CMake finds; here that is the base image's Open MPI. At run time monoprop loads the backend for the family of the MPI library mpi4py uses, and raises MPIAbiMismatchError if it was not built for it. The smoke test now checks that the family recorded in _mpi_abis.py matches the mpi4py variant. It reads both from files, so it still never imports monoprop, whose -march code the CI runner may not be able to run.
  • Docs:
    • The MareNostrum5 "Check the image" command used the removed monoprop.has_mpi. It now builds a propagator on a duplicate of MPI.COMM_WORLD on each rank, which loads monoprop's MPI backend and raises MPIAbiMismatchError if mpi4py and monoprop disagree on the MPI ABI. Verified with mpiexec -n 2 on a throwaway MARCH=x86-64-v3 build of the image, including the mismatch case.
    • The HPC clusters page points users with network access to the MPI-enabled PyPI wheels (monoprop[mpi], the supported MPI families, a link to the minimum versions).
    • building.mdx notes that the image has a single MPI backend, which the smoke test checks.

Changes

  • tools/container/smoke-test.sh: new "MPI ABI of monoprop's backend" step
  • docs/content/docs/clusters/marenostrum5.mdx, docs/content/docs/clusters/index.mdx, docs/content/docs/building.mdx

Verified locally on the published base monoprop-base:e6e97ad74e20:

  • The build produces _core_mpi.openmpi.abi3.so, and _mpi_abis.py records ("openmpi",).
  • The smoke test passes, printing built for: openmpi; mpi4py uses: openmpi, and so does the two-rank MPI job.
  • Against a package directory built only for mpich, the new step fails with mpi4py uses the openmpi MPI ABI, but monoprop was built for: mpich.

Still to check after merge:

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that source-built container images provide one MPI backend and that communicator-based propagators raise an error when mpi4py uses an incompatible MPI ABI.
    • Updated cluster installation guidance for systems where pip can install wheels using a compatible cluster MPI, while retaining guidance for systems without outbound network access.
    • Updated the MareNostrum 5 check to exercise a two-rank communicator and report rank, version, and MPI-backend loading status.
  • Tests
    • The container smoke test reports the built and detected MPI ABI values and fails when they are incompatible.

…uilt for

Since #426 monoprop loads its MPI extension for the ABI family of the MPI
library mpi4py uses and raises MPIAbiMismatchError for any other. The smoke
test now compares the family recorded in _mpi_abis.py with the mpi4py variant,
reading both from files so that monoprop is still not imported.

Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
monoprop.has_mpi no longer exists; the MareNostrum5 check prints MPI_ABIS. Point
users with network access to the MPI-enabled PyPI wheels, and say that the
image's source build has one MPI backend, which the smoke test checks.

Walkthrough

The container smoke test now checks whether mpi4py’s detected MPI ABI matches monoprop’s built ABI list. Documentation describes source-build ABI limits, cluster wheel installation, and a MareNostrum5 compatibility check using a two-rank communicator.

Changes: MPI ABI validation and guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Container MPI ABI check
tools/container/smoke-test.sh
The smoke test reads monoprop’s ABI list and detects mpi4py’s ABI from its extension filename. It reports both values and fails if the detected ABI is not in the list.
MPI setup and ABI documentation
docs/content/docs/building.mdx, docs/content/docs/clusters/index.mdx, docs/content/docs/clusters/marenostrum5.mdx
The documentation describes the source-build ABI limitation and cluster wheel installation. The MareNostrum5 check constructs a propagator with a two-rank communicator and describes the compatibility check and MPIAbiMismatchError outcome.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: an MPI ABI check for monoprop's backend, added to the container smoke test. The changeset adds a check that compares the ABI family in _mpi_abis.py with mpi4py's MPI ABI, and it updates docs to match. The 'test(container)' prefix fits the change, which lives in tools/container/smoke-test.sh and the docs. The check mark emoji is noise that the title guidance says to avoid, but it does not make the title inaccurate.

Explanation

installation guidance: specify that the wheels support the MPICH family and Open
MPI, and that users must install mpi4py via the monoprop[mpi] extra. Refer to
the MPI guide for supported version limits, and avoid implying that pip
availability alone guarantees compatibility.

- Line 42: Update the documented command that prints `MPI.COMM_WORLD.Get_rank()`
and `monoprop.MPI_ABIS` to construct a minimal propagator with a duplicate of
`MPI.COMM_WORLD`, so each rank exercises the MPI ABI check. If the command is
intended only as an import and mpi4py execution smoke test, revise the
accompanying description so it does not present the output as an ABI check.

MPI_ABIS only lists the families the image was built for, so printing it did
not show that monoprop can run on the MPI library mpi4py loads. The check now
builds a propagator on a duplicated COMM_WORLD, which loads the MPI backend and
raises MPIAbiMismatchError on a mismatch. Also qualify which MPI the PyPI wheels
support and link MPIAbiMismatchError.
