The hardening guide's note on Convox's system-env-disable gate now covers three things learned turning it on:

  • The value format. Convox reads FEATURE_GATES as name=value pairs and silently ignores a bare system-env-disable, so the value is system-env-disable=true.
  • When it takes effect. New processes lose RACK and RACK_URL at once; running ones keep them until their app's next promote.
  • Rotation. Rotate the rack API password afterwards, and the gateway's RACK_TOKEN with it.

Docs only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that RACK should be set on the gateway and other apps that read it before enabling the system-env-disable feature gate.
    • Added instructions for configuring the gate via the rack CLI or Terraform, including the required name=value format.
    • Explained when new and running processes lose access to RACK and RACK_URL, and recommended rotating the rack API password and gateway token.

Walkthrough

The security hardening guidance now explains how to prepare apps before enabling system-env-disable, configure the gate, and account for its effects on new and running processes. It also recommends rotating the rack API password and gateway RACK_TOKEN.

The guidance says to set RACK on the gateway and other apps that read it before enabling system-env-disable. It provides rack CLI and Terraform examples, notes that gate settings require name=value format, describes when processes lose RACK and RACK_URL, and recommends rotating credentials.

- Line 200: Update the statement about new processes to clarify that they no
longer receive system-provided RACK and RACK_URL, while explicitly configured
RACK remains available; preserve the existing note that running processes retain
the variables until their app’s next promote.
- Around line 201-202: Update the hardening guidance to make credential rotation
mandatory: instruct operators to rotate the rack API password and update the
gateway’s RACK_TOKEN to the new credential, rather than presenting rotation as
optional.
