Release the CLI for macOS and Linux, add an install script and rack-gateway update - #198
Release builds. The Release workflow's CLI job becomes a matrix, each platform built and smoke-tested on its own runner by scripts/build-cli-release.sh:
Archive
Runner
Security keys
rack-gateway-darwin-arm64.tar.gz
macos-15
yes (libfido2 and OpenSSL linked statically from Homebrew; the script checks otool -L shows only system libraries)
rack-gateway-linux-amd64.tar.gz
ubuntu-24.04
no (nofido)
rack-gateway-linux-arm64.tar.gz
ubuntu-24.04-arm
no (nofido)
Each archive now holds a single rack-gateway binary and is published with its .sha256 and its build provenance attestation bundle (.sigstore.json, from attest-build-provenance's bundle-path). scripts/install-release.sh is published as the release's install.sh.
Install script.
curl -fsSL https://github.com/DocSpring/rack-gateway/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
POSIX sh. It picks the platform (Rosetta shells count as arm64), downloads the archive, checksum and bundle, checks the checksum, and runs gh attestation verify --bundle ... --signer-workflow .../release.yml when gh is installed (this works without a gh login). It installs into /usr/local/bin if writable, else ~/.local/bin, renaming over any existing binary. Options: RACK_GATEWAY_VERSION, RACK_GATEWAY_INSTALL_DIR, RACK_GATEWAY_REPOSITORY. The existing from-source scripts/install.sh is unchanged.
rack-gateway update [--check] [--version vX.Y.Z] (internal/cli/update). In order, so a failed step leaves the installed binary alone:
Creates a temp file next to the running binary (symlinks resolved). An unwritable directory fails here with a sudo hint, before any download.
Downloads the archive, .sha256 and .sigstore.json over HTTPS. Requests and every redirect must stay on github.com / *.githubusercontent.com, with size limits.
Checks the checksum, then verifies the bundle with sigstore-go v1.3.0. It must be a SLSA provenance attestation for the archive's digest, signed with GitHub Actions' OIDC issuer by https://github.com/<repo>/.github/workflows/release.yml@refs/tags/<tag>. The trusted root is fetched from the public Sigstore instance through TUF, with the local cache off. The verifier options match gh attestation verify (SCT, tlog, observer timestamp).
Extracts only a regular file named rack-gateway, then runs its new hidden build-info command. It must report the release's version, and keep security key support when the running build has it (a new webauthn.Supported constant). So a Linux build from source with libfido2 is never replaced by a nofido release. Then it renames the file over the binary, keeping the old file's permissions.
It refuses on development builds, never downgrades without --version, and errors on platforms without a release build.
Daily update check. The root command's PersistentPreRun starts a background check when the saved result (update-check.json in the config dir) is more than a day old. main prints one line after the command (and after its error), waiting at most a second for a check still running:
A new release of rack-gateway is available: 0.1.29 → 0.1.30. Run "rack-gateway update" to install it.
When it runs:
Release builds only, and only when stderr is a terminal.
Not when CI or RACK_GATEWAY_NO_UPDATE_CHECK is set.
Not for update, version, build-info, completion, help or cobra's completion requests.
A check canceled because the command finished isn't saved, so the next command retries it. A failed check is saved, so an offline machine doesn't retry on every command.
update.Repository defaults to DocSpring/rack-gateway. The build script sets it from github.repository, so a fork's releases update from the fork.
Docs updated: CLI installation (install, updating, verification), the environment variable table, the CircleCI example (the archive's binary is now rack-gateway), the upgrade checklist, AGENTS.md (Release workflow) and internal/cli/AGENTS.md.
Testing
internal/cli/update and internal/cli tests with -race, plus the nofido variant:
Real data: verifying v0.1.28's real attestation bundle with the public-good trusted root (saved in testdata) and the production verifier options. Wrong tag, wrong digest and wrong repository all fail.
VirtualSigstore attestations: a wrong tag, branch, workflow, repository, issuer, predicate or artifact is rejected.
Install with stubbed downloads, verifier and build-info: a checksum mismatch, a rejected attestation, a version mismatch, losing security keys, an unwritable directory or an unsupported platform each leave the binary untouched with no temp file left behind. Archive extraction rejects symlinks, nested paths and non-gzip input.
The daily check: caching, failure saves, cancellation and stale tags.
The update command's outcomes and the skip rules.
scripts/build-cli-release.sh run on Linux amd64 and macOS arm64:
Linux: security keys: not supported, 28 MB archive.
macOS: security keys: supported, only system libraries linked, 33 MB archive.
Against real GitHub with a 0.1.29 Linux build:
update --check, and update --check --version v0.1.28.
update --version v0.1.28 downloads the real archive through GitHub's asset redirect and checks it against the real .sha256, then stops at the .sigstore.json that v0.1.28 doesn't have. The binary is unchanged and no temp file is left.
A live TUF fetch of the trusted root verifies the real v0.1.28 bundle for v0.1.28 and rejects it for v0.1.27. Nothing is written to ~/.sigstore.
The notice in a pty (script): shown for a newer saved release, silent when stderr isn't a terminal or with RACK_GATEWAY_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1. A stale state triggers a real GitHub check.
Not testable before a release: the matrix itself (the workflow only runs on v* tags), the install script end to end, and a full rack-gateway update (the first release with bundles is the first one that can be installed). After the next release, check curl ... install.sh | sh and rack-gateway update --version <that release> from a binary built as an earlier version.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
CLI releases are available for Apple Silicon Macs and Linux on amd64 and arm64, with security-key support on macOS.
Install the CLI with a release install script. Downloads include checksums and provenance attestations for verification.
Use the CLI’s update command to check for or install a selected release. A daily update check can notify you when a newer version is available; disable it with RACK_GATEWAY_NO_UPDATE_CHECK.
Documentation
Updated installation, upgrade, and platform guidance, including verification options and security-key availability.
…rack-gateway update
Releases now build the CLI on three runners: darwin-arm64 (security keys, libfido2 linked statically),
linux-amd64 and linux-arm64 (nofido). Each archive holds a single rack-gateway binary and ships with its
checksum and its build provenance attestation bundle (.sigstore.json). scripts/install-release.sh is
published as the release's install.sh:
curl -fsSL https://github.com/DocSpring/rack-gateway/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
rack-gateway update downloads the release for this platform, checks the checksum and the Sigstore bundle
(signed by .github/workflows/release.yml at that release's tag), runs the new binary's build-info to check
its version and that it keeps security key support, then renames it over the running binary. Release
builds check GitHub once a day in the background and print a notice after the command when a newer
release exists.

command so it prints “is the latest release” only when `version` is empty; for
an explicit `--version` matching the installed version, print a neutral “is
already installed” message. Keep the existing return behavior unchanged.
Review comments at @internal/cli/update/check.go:
- Line 96: Update the update-advice logic around AssetName and Notice so Linux
release-version source builds that support security keys recommend rebuilding
from source instead of running rack-gateway update, which Installer.check will
reject; preserve the existing update recommendation for builds that can be
replaced by a published asset.

update.Replaceable decides which builds a release can replace: a platform without a release build, or a
Linux build with security keys (only the macOS release has them), can't be. The update notice and
update --check now tell those to build the new release from source, and update refuses them before it
downloads anything (the build-info check after the download stays). update --version naming the
installed release now says it's already installed, not that it's the latest.
