ci: select unit tests and ci.yaml jobs per change, plus docs (spec 023 PRs 3–5) - #779
Conversation
…ines Mode units emits go-packages (package import graph, reverse closure across modules) and web-tests (vitest related inputs). The go and web jobs run only those, keep the module coverage gates on whole-module runs and use hack/check_changed_coverage.py on partial runs (spec 023 US2, OD-1, OD-5, OD-8, OD-9). WalkthroughCI now selects affected Go packages, web tests, and workflow jobs. Partial Go and web test runs use added-line coverage checks. Workflow edits can select affected jobs and widen associated test selections. ChangesChange-Based CI Test Selection

Mode jobs maps changed ci.yaml lines to their job (plus the jobs it needs) and .golangci.yml to the lint legs; edits outside any job or in changes/report still force full scope. Each job gate is ORed with the edited-job list and modes modules, units and e2e widen that job's own selection (spec 023 US3, OD-3). - Line 267: Remove ci.yaml from the kindsmoke ingress-smoke filter so unrelated
ci.yaml edits do not trigger that job; rely on the line mapper to select it when
its own workflow block changes.
Review comments at @docs/contributing.md:
- Line 96: Update the selection contract in the contributing guide so changes to
.golangci.yml select both the lint legs and workflow-lint; keep the existing
workflow lint mapping for other workflow files.
- Around line 93-94: Update the Go e2e tests description to say selection can be
based on changed components and matching paths, including universal paths and
changed e2e test or helper files; retain the note that jobs with no selected
tests are skipped.
- Around line 89-90: Update the Web unit tests description in the contributing
documentation to state that when vitest related produces no
coverage/coverage-final.json, the web job runs the full npm run test:cover
command instead of applying the partial changed-lines check.
Review comments at @hack/ci_scope.py:
- Around line 595-597: Update the Go module-wide change handling in
go_packages() so changes to go.mod or go.sum include importing packages across
module boundaries, rather than selecting only the changed module. Reuse the
existing affected_modules() logic or otherwise widen the selected modules so
each affected Go job receives its test packages.
- Line 585: Update the package-indexing flow around package_index so deleted
packages remain identifiable from the base revision and their reverse importers
are included in test selection; preserve the existing head-checkout indexing
behavior for packages that still exist.
- Around line 725-726: Update ci_jobs() so selecting an e2e suite with paired
architecture jobs also selects its arm64 job when the amd64 job block is edited;
preserve existing selection behavior for other jobs.

50-50: LGTM!
- go.mod or go.sum of a module now also selects every package that imports that module, across modules (FR-005). - A deleted package's last Go file selects the packages whose imports still name it. - An edited e2e job brings its other-architecture twin (FR-010). - The ingress smoke no longer runs on every ci.yaml edit; its own block selects it through ci-jobs, and a full-scope jobs run turns it on. - contributing.md and the CLI contract describe these rules, the web coverage fallback, path-based e2e selection and workflow-lint for .golangci.yml. New tests cover the three selection changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winInclude the unit-selection fallback in the full-suite gate.
If
unitscatches a selection error, it emitsall: true. TheCIgate does not read that output, so unaffected Go or web jobs can still skip instead of running the full suite. Addsteps.units.outputs.allto this gate. As per coding guidelines, FR-002 requires CI to “run everything” when selection is uncertain.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

- Line 381: Update the KINDSMOKE gate to include the full-scope selector outputs
used by e2e, so ingress smoke runs whenever an unmapped path falls back to full
scope. Preserve the existing push, workflow_dispatch, and full-run label
conditions.

…ss smoke on any full scope The CI gate now reads the units step's all output, and KINDSMOKE turns on for every full-scope selector (scope, e2e, units, jobs), so an unmapped path or selection error runs the ingress smoke too (FR-002). Each TestCISelection_* test commits a whole checkout, which leaves enough loose objects to start git's background gc and maintenance. On arm64 they were still writing into .git when t.TempDir removed it, so the tests failed at cleanup with "directory not empty" after every assertion had passed (#748, #775; #785 hit the same in the coverage fixture). The git helpers in the e2e test and both Python test files now pass gc.auto=0 and maintenance.auto=false. Approved by valgul 2026-10-22. Port of the e2e part of 298bd8a (PR #779, approved by valgul 2026-10-22). TestCISelection_* failed at t.TempDir cleanup on arm64 with "directory not empty" because background gc/maintenance was still writing into .git. This blocks the operator bucket on this PR; the change becomes a no-op once #779 reaches master. Spec 023 PRs 3, 4 and 5. PR 2 (#778) is merged, so this targets master. PR 4 (#785) and PR 5 (#786) were merged into this branch, so this PR now carries all three. Their descriptions are on #785 and #786.
PR 3: unit selection (T031–T040)
Unit tests run only for the packages and web files a change can reach. Coverage gates are switched per run.
hack/ci_scope.pymodeunitsemits two values:go-packages: for each module, the package patterns to test. It reads the import blocks of every.gofile and selects the changed package plus, transitively across modules, every package that imports it. A_test.gochange selects only its own package.FILE_READERSadds the packages whose tests read files outside their own directory. A module'sgo.mod,go.sumor.testcoverage.yml, or a file that belongs to no package, gives./....web-tests:"all", or the changedweb/srcfiles to pass tovitest related. Shared inputs, deleted files and any otherweb/file outsidesrcande2egive"all"../...everywhere and"all".gojob tests$GO_PACKAGESin place of./..., and always runsgo vet ./.... A whole-module run keeps the module coverage gate. A package-level run uses the new changed-lines gate. An empty list runs vet only.webjob keeps lint and build whole. On a partial run it callsvitest related --run --coveragewith thresholds off, then runs the changed-lines gate.hack/check_changed_coverage.py(stdlib only) intersectsgit diff -U0added lines with a Go profile or Istanbul JSON, against the module's own threshold.PR 4: ci.yaml line mapping (T042–T046, OD-3), from #785
