π See what works on your platform β a feature checklist for every build and store
Airclone is young software, and we are working through making every feature stable on every platform it ships to.
Issues are welcome, and encouraged β open one here. If you can, attach a problem report (Settings β Diagnostics β Problem report β Copy report): it names your version, platform and package, and secrets are stripped as it is recorded. For a security problem, please use Report a vulnerability under the Security tab instead of a public issue.
Questions, ideas and how-tos go in Discussions β ask how to set up a remote, suggest a feature, or show what you built with it. Issues stay for things that are broken.
rclone is an extraordinarily capable tool for moving files across 70+ cloud storage systems β but it's a command-line program. Airclone turns that power into a point-and-click experience, and brings it to the desktop and the phone:
- ποΈ One UI for every backend β S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, SFTP, WebDAV, local disksβ¦ all appear as peers in a single list, with the same rows, gestures, and context menu.
- ποΈ Direct manipulation β drag a folder from one cloud to another to copy it; the transfer runs as a live job. Easy one-click sync, and a dry-run mode that runs a job without writing anything.
- β° Sync & schedule β Copy, Move, Sync (make the destination match) or Two-way; mark a folder as the sync source, then later sync it INTO wherever you are standing. Save a job and run it on a schedule (on Windows and Android a schedule also fires with Airclone closed β Task Scheduler, or a WorkManager poll on the phone; on macOS and Linux it runs while Airclone is open, and iOS has no scheduling yet β see Scheduling). A repeating Sync always carries a delete cap, and tripping it pauses every schedule until you look.
- ποΈ Back up & restore β Back up a folder asks three things (what, where, how often) and creates a copy-only task that keeps overwritten files as versions, with a retention window and a cleanup that shows what it would delete before it does. Restore is the file browser opened at the backup, so copying back goes through the same overwrite guard as everything else. Desktop and Android β see Backup & Restore.
- π· Camera-roll backup (Android) β DCIM, plus any folders you add, mirrored to a remote on the background schedule: Wi-Fi-only by default, videos on their own toggle, never deleting from the phone.
- π² Tree view (desktop) β a fourth view mode beside list, grid and media: expand folders in place, several at once, with the Details columns; selection and every right-click action work from a node.
- π½ Make it local β mount a remote as a drive on desktop, or hand any file straight to another app from your phone with Open in another app and the share sheet.
- π Free, open-source, and private β local-only, no telemetry. All manual power stays free.
- π’ Designed for IT, without phoning home β what ships today is the immovable part: no account, no telemetry, no Airclone-operated endpoint, and mount, serve, reveal-in-file-manager and archive each behind a single kill-switch provider β the seam a policy source would flip, and the one the Mac App Store build already flips. The wider surface β MDM policy, Vault/KMS secrets, on-prem audit, an optional self-hosted control plane β is a specified, phased posture, not a shipped feature: Enterprise Readiness. Any enterprise control that lands flows only through customer-owned channels.
Status: 0.x, active development β the free Windows, macOS, Linux and Android builds ship on the Releases page: Windows builds are code-signed (Azure Artifact Signing, "Gigaion, LLC") and macOS builds are Developer ID signed + notarized. Airclone is also listed on the App Store (iOS and macOS), the Microsoft Store (Windows), and Google Play (Android β publishing to open testing and to production are both buttons someone presses; no tag does it by hand). Windows and Android builds bundle the rclone engine (no first-run download). Stack: Flutter over a single
RcloneClientseam β see Architecture at a glance.
Not every feature is on every platform. Some operating systems and stores do not allow certain things, and a few features are not built yet on every platform. The big ones:
- π± Phones and tablets cannot mount a drive, serve to your network, or host the Web UI. Android and iOS do not let an app add a filesystem driver, and they stop apps running in the background. You can still open a computer's Web UI from your phone's browser.
- π The Mac App Store build runs in Apple's sandbox, so it cannot mount, show files in Finder, or work with archives. The signed download from Releases can.
- πͺ The Microsoft Store build is the same as the installer, except that the app and its rclone engine update only through the Store.
- β° Scheduled tasks run with Airclone closed only on Windows and Android. On macOS and Linux they run while it is open, and iOS has no scheduling yet.
- π§ Some features stay hidden until you turn on Advanced mode in Settings: mounting, serving, two-way sync and the command console among them.
It is a checklist of every feature on every build: Windows, Microsoft Store, macOS, Mac App Store, Linux, Flatpak, Android (Google Play and APK), Android TV, iPhone and iPad. It marks which features need Advanced mode and explains why each missing feature is missing. Check it before you choose which build to install.
Everything happens on the machine running Airclone. Mount a drive from your phone and it mounts on the server. Start a 200 GB sync and the server does it, at its network speed, and it keeps going after you close the tab. Full details in the Web UI guide.
The full rclone engine ships inside the APK β browse every remote with a touch-first UI, run transfers in the background with a live notification, and hand any file to another app with Open in another app or the share sheet. Scheduled tasks and backups keep running with Airclone closed.
Three answers β what, where, how often β and it shows you the folder your files will land in before creating anything. A backup only ever copies: never a sync, never a move, never a dry run, and a file it replaces is kept beside the new one as a version you can restore.
Above 700dp Airclone switches to the desktop shell β sidebar, dual panes, transfers dock β so a tablet gets the same app a PC does rather than a stretched phone layout.

UI (Flutter, shared) β State (Dart, shared) β RcloneClient interface β engine
ββ desktop: spawn `rclone rcd` + RC HTTP API
β (or in-process librclone via dart:ffi)
ββ Android: the bundled rclone binary as a jniLib,
β spawned as a loopback `rcd`
ββ iOS / Mac App Store: in-process librclone via dart:ffi,
because neither may spawn a subprocess
The whole app talks to one RcloneClient interface, so ~95% of the code is platform-agnostic, and
one function β _resolveEngineMode in app/lib/src/state/engine_controller.dart β decides which
engine runs. See Core Architecture.
The app lives in app/ (Flutter). This machine builds with Docker locally (analyze/test)
and GitHub Actions for the OS-native binaries. Desktop builds also need a Rust toolchain on
PATH (super_native_extensions compiles a crate via cargokit). Full details:

docker compose run --rm flutter flutter test # unit testsDownloads: see Downloads for every platform and both routes.
About the rclone engine: Windows and Android builds bundle it, so there is nothing to download on first launch. Other desktop builds fetch and verify it the first time they run, and can update it later from Settings β except the Microsoft Store package, which updates its engine only when the app itself updates, through the Store. Alpha and beta builds on the Releases page are marked pre-release.
Every platform, both routes, in one place. The store column installs and updates itself. The direct column is the same app, free, installed by you. They are the same builds from the same CI β the store fee funds the code-signing certificates those stores require, nothing else.
Direct links always resolve to the newest release, so they stay correct as versions move.

Which one should I pick? If your platform has a store listing and you want it to update itself, use the store. Otherwise take the first direct link for your platform. Both are the same app. The one exception is the Mac: the App Store build is sandboxed and cannot mount drives. Compare every build in What works on each platform.
You do not need to install anything on the device you are browsing from. Turn on the
Web UI on the machine that has your remotes β airclone --webui, or
Settings β Remote access β and open it in any browser. The layout follows the screen, so a phone gets
the phone interface and a laptop gets the desktop one.
Every mount, every listing and every transfer still happens on the machine running Airclone. The browser draws the picture.
Airclone is free. Every build on the Releases page is free to download and install (ad-hoc / sideload), and you can always build it from source yourself β no fees, no feature gates, no accounts.
The one exception: the store listings carry a small fee. That fee exists solely to fund the code-signing certificates and developer-program memberships those stores require β it buys convenience, not features. The store builds and the free builds are the same app.
| Store | Platforms | Listing |
|---|---|---|
| Apple App Store | iPhone, iPad (iOS 13+) and Mac (macOS 10.15+) β one purchase covers all three | apps.apple.com |
| Google Play | Android (phone, tablet, Android TV) | play.google.com |
| Microsoft Store | Windows 10/11 | apps.microsoft.com |
What the fee buys is the managed path: the store installs it, keeps it updated, and vouches for the signature. Everything else β Linux, and any platform you would rather install by hand β is on the Releases page for free, forever. Both routes are side by side in Downloads.
Three ways, all on the Releases page. Pick by how your desktop likes to install things:
Each comes for x86_64 (most PCs) and ARM64 (Raspberry Pi 4/5 on a 64-bit OS, ARM servers and laptops; file names with aarch64 / arm64). Run uname -m if unsure: x86_64 or aarch64.
| Download | What it is |
|---|---|
Airclone-x86_64.AppImage |
One file. chmod +x it and run it β it carries its own libraries, so nothing needs installing. Start here if you are not sure. |
airclone.flatpak |
flatpak install --user ./airclone.flatpak. Integrates with your software centre, but does not update itself: it is a single file, so flatpak update refreshes the GNOME runtime it uses and not Airclone. Airclone checks for new releases and tells you; install the new .flatpak over the old one. Mounting needs one extra permission you grant yourself, because it lets Airclone run commands outside the sandbox β see mounting from the Flatpak. Everything else works without it. |
airclone-linux-x64.tar.gz |
The raw files, for packaging it yourself or putting it where you want. Needs libmpv, libsecret-1 and libasound2 installed already β the other two carry their own. |
The rclone engine is included in all three; there is nothing else to download. The
AppImage uses your system's ALSA (libasound2) when you have one β replacing a working
one would break your machine's own sound setup β and carries a last-resort copy so it
still starts on a slim system that has none. It does the same for OpenGL ES
(libGLESv2), used only when your system has a graphics driver but not that one library,
which is the usual case on WSL.
Mounting a remote as a drive works from the AppImage and the tar.gz, into a folder such
as ~/Airclone/gdrive, once FUSE is installed (sudo apt install fuse3). It did not work on
Linux before v0.13.6.
What we know, and how we know it:
- β Confirmed by users: someone ran it there and told us. Usually that was a problem report, which we fixed.
- π§ͺ Tested by us: every release build, or our own machines.
- β Expected to work: inside the supported range, but not confirmed yet.
- β Not supported.
Running it somewhere not listed? Tell us and we'll add it.
Windows (x64; minimum Windows 10)
| System | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | β π§ͺ | Our development machines. Installer verified end to end in v0.5.7. Every build is also tested on GitHub's Windows Server runners. |
| Windows 10 | β | Confirmed by a user. Their blank-window startup bug (an empty card reader) was fixed in v0.8.3. |
| Windows on ARM (Windows 11) | β | No ARM build. The x64 build should run under Windows' built-in emulation. |
| Windows 8.1 and older | β | The installer requires Windows 10. |
macOS (one universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel; minimum macOS 10.15 Catalina)
| System | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Current macOS, Apple Silicon | π§ͺ | Every build runs on GitHub's latest macOS runner. Each Mac App Store release also passes Apple's review. |
| Intel Macs | β | Included in the universal app, but not confirmed yet. |
| macOS 10.15 Catalina to macOS 13 | β | Within the stated minimum, but not confirmed yet. |
| macOS 10.14 and older | β | Below the minimum. |
Linux (x86_64 and ARM64)
The AppImage and the tar.gz need glibc 2.38 or newer, which means Ubuntu 24.04 or newer. The Flatpak brings its own runtime, so it's the one to try on older systems.
| Distribution | Desktop / display | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arch Linux (rolling) | niri (Wayland), 4K, Intel graphics | β π§ͺ | Confirmed by a user with the tar.gz. The too-small UI on 4K is fixed in v0.24.0 (Interface size, #32). The AppImage crash on Mesa 26.2 is fixed in v0.25.1 (#38). Every build starts the AppImage on Arch; the old v0.24.1 crashes there, so the check is known to catch it. |
| Ubuntu 24.04 LTS | β | β π§ͺ | Confirmed by a user. Startup problems on a clean install were fixed in v0.8.x. Every build is made and tested here, on x86_64 and ARM64. |
| Windows WSL2 (Ubuntu) | WSLg | β | Confirmed by a user. Startup (v0.13.6) and typing (v0.13.7) fixed. |
| Fedora (current) | β | π§ͺ | Every build starts the AppImage on Fedora. |
| Debian 13 (trixie) | β | π§ͺ | Every build starts the AppImage on Debian 13. |
| Linux Mint 22+, Pop!_OS 24.04, Kubuntu / Xubuntu 24.04+, elementary OS 8, Zorin OS 18 | β | β | Built on Ubuntu 24.04, which these share. |
| openSUSE Tumbleweed, Manjaro, EndeavourOS, CachyOS | β | β | Rolling releases, like Arch. |
| Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit, Trixie) | β | β | Use the ARM64 build. |
| Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, RHEL / Rocky / Alma 9 | β | β AppImage, tar.gz Β· β Flatpak | glibc is too old for the AppImage and tar.gz. The Flatpak should work, but isn't confirmed yet. |
Phase 0 spikes β Phase 1 desktop MVP β Phase 2 mobile are shipped, iOS included; most of Phase 3 advanced (bisync, crypt, scheduling) landed during the alphas. The big remaining item is the automatic half of cross-device profile sync β an encrypted blob kept on one of your own remotes; the manual half already ships (encrypted config export/import and an offline QR handoff between a desktop and a phone). Live queue: Feature Backlog Β· details in the Cross-Platform Plan.

π₯ The name is a double wink: Airclone reads as (AI)rclone β an AIβbuilt companion to rclone β and as air + clone, cloning your files through the "air" across the clouds rclone reaches.
