What

Give the narrow portrait GIF an explicit width="432" so desktop github.com no longer renders it at intrinsic size. One README line changes (the image line); alt text is byte-identical, caption lines and GIF files are untouched.

Why

Measured on github.com before this change (Playwright, evidence/readme-narrow-gif-desktop-width-20261017T013240Z/before/geometry.json):

viewport before (box) after (expected)
1280x900 648 x 900 px (viewport-tall clip) 432 x ~600 px
390x844 324 px wide (scaled by GitHub) 324 px wide, unchanged (432 > column width, so it still scales to fit)

scrollWidth stays 390 on phone. Post-merge numbers are captured on the default branch into after/.

Check

  • firstMedia(README.md) still returns gate-demo-narrow.gif with the identical alt (site card extractor unaffected).
  • Merge goes through tools/proof/merge-green.sh (head-SHA check runs verified).

…t-tall

Replace the markdown image with <img width="432"> (alt byte-identical). Phone
width is unchanged: GitHub scales the image to the column either way.
