Two defects in the audio chain: the EQ clipped on any boost, and 16-bit exclusive output was rounded without dither.

The EQ clipped on a boost

A boost pushed a loud master past full scale, and the decoder's final clamp_to_unity turned it into hard clipping: +12 dB of bass on a modern master was heard as distortion.

The chain now starts with an automatic preamp:

  • The response peak. It equals the peak of the cascade's own response, measured over 1 024 log-spaced points (20 Hz–20 kHz) plus each band's centre, in f64, once per change of setting or sample rate. It is measured rather than taken from the largest slider, because adjacent bands (Q 0.707) overlap and their boosts add up: Bass booster (+6 / +5 / +3) peaks near +8 dB.
  • 1 dB more for transients. A filter can overshoot its response peak on a sharp pattern. Measured with full-scale [1, -1, -1, 1, …] input, the worst case is +12 dB at 15 kHz, at 0.9 dB over. The strict bound (the sum of the impulse response) would cost every boosting setting 2–4 dB more for patterns music does not contain.
  • Flat or cut-only settings keep a preamp of exactly 1.0 and are untouched.

The trade-off: a boosting setting now plays quieter (Bass booster by about 9 dB), at the level where it no longer distorts. The module's comments also lose their brand references.

16-bit exclusive output was rounded without dither

When volume, ReplayGain, the EQ or a fade moved a sample off a 16-bit step, the WASAPI and ALSA exclusive packers rounded it, leaving an error that follows the signal (distortion on quiet passages and fade-outs). pcm_scale::Dither16 adds TPDF dither of one step peak, but only where the sample is not already a 16-bit value, so an unaltered 16-bit stream stays bit-perfect. 24- and 32-bit output is not dithered. Shared-mode output is converted by cpal and the system mixer, not by us. DoP is untouched.

Checks

  • New tests:
    • eq.rs: flat and cut-only settings get unity; a lone +6 dB boost gets -7 dB (the boost plus the margin); overlapping boosts get more than the largest slider; a full-scale 60 Hz sine under +12 dB settles under unity; the worst transient pattern under +12 dB at 15 kHz stays at or under 1.0.
    • pcm_scale.rs: all 65 536 16-bit values pass the dither unchanged; the dither stays bounded and unbiased over 200 000 draws.
  • Every expectation was checked numerically beforehand with an independent script. The app crate's tests run on the CI's Ubuntu job, which also compiles alsa_exclusive.rs (Linux-only).
  • cargo fmt --check passes, and cargo clippy -p waveflow --all-targets -D warnings is clean on Windows.
  • Local CodeRabbit review. Its one finding, the transients, was applied as the 1 dB margin.
  • Documented in docs/features/playback.md: a new Equalizer section, and integer output and dither.

Needs a listening test before merging: a boosting EQ preset, and a fade-out in 16-bit exclusive mode.

Summary by CodeRabbit

…mple

Rounding a sample that volume, ReplayGain or the EQ moved off a 16-bit
step leaves an error that follows the signal, heard as distortion on
quiet passages and fade-outs. TPDF dither of one step peak turns it into
a steady hiss near -96 dBFS. A sample that already is a 16-bit value is
left alone, so an unaltered 16-bit stream stays bit-perfect; all 65 536
values are tested.
A boost pushed a loud master past full scale and the decoder's final
clamp turned it into hard clipping. The chain now starts with a preamp
equal to the peak of its own response, measured on the cascade since
adjacent bands overlap and their boosts add up, plus 1 dB for the
transients a filter can overshoot by (0.9 dB measured at worst). A flat
or cut-only setting keeps a preamp of exactly 1.0. Also drops the brand
names from the module's comments.

📝 Walkthrough

Les sorties ALSA et WASAPI exclusives appliquent un dithering lors de la conversion PCM 16 bits. L’égaliseur calcule un préampli à partir du pic de sa cascade de biquads et l’applique avant les filtres. La documentation décrit ces comportements.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c29b6

No actionable issue remains from this review. The planned listening test for boosted EQ and 16-bit exclusive fade-out is still worthwhile before release.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c29b6

The changes remain confined to audio processing. Stream state stays locally owned, existing output limits remain in place, and no material security risk introduced or worsened by this PR was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior is bounded to processed playback samples and individual exclusive-output streams. The inspected callers do not expand access to other users, services, credentials, or persistent stores.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Audio samples reach the changed processing through existing decoder and render paths. No new trust transition was identified, and final decoder clamping and integer saturation remain effective downstream controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Quantizer state is local to each render thread rather than shared across streams. ALSA retries already-packed samples without advancing dither again. Stream teardown drops the state, and reopening constructs a fresh instance, avoiding a new cross-stream recovery dependency.

A slider moved during playback changed the preamp between two samples,
heard as a click. More attenuation still applies at once, since the new
boost acts from the next sample, and is given back over one buffer.
Also notes the measured cost of the response sweep (about 60 us in a
release build) and adds dither tests for determinism and a state that
never reaches zero.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment asking for the sum of the impulse response (L1 norm) as the preamp bound: not applied, after measuring what it would cost.

Preset Preamp now (peak + 1 dB) L1 preamp Extra cut Worst constructed input now
Bass booster -8.99 dB -10.90 dB -1.90 dB +1.90 dBFS
Rock -7.61 dB -11.07 dB -3.46 dB +3.46 dBFS
Dance -8.89 dB -11.63 dB -2.74 dB +2.74 dBFS
Treble booster -7.19 dB -9.20 dB -2.00 dB +2.00 dBFS
+12 dB at 15 kHz -13.00 dB -13.89 dB -0.89 dB +0.89 dBFS

The L1 bound would make every boosting setting 2 to 3.5 dB quieter still, permanently, to cover one input: the sign pattern of the cascade's own impulse response, reversed, at full scale. Music does not contain that pattern, and the decoder's final clamp remains the backstop if a master ever approaches it. The 1 dB margin covers the sharpest realistic transient we measured, a full-scale [1, -1, -1, 1, ...] pattern under +12 dB at 15 kHz, which a test keeps under 1.0.
