Summary

Step F of the enrichment plan, which implements RFC-011 decision 8. Nothing changes until an operator lists deezer in WAVEFLOW_METADATA_PROVIDERS.

  • Deezer becomes a provider, for portraits only (Provider::Deezer, src/enrichment.rs). It needs no key. It runs the artist search through the core's DeezerClient (the base URL is a constant, as Last.fm's is), picks the artist with the core's select_by_name, and takes best_picture(), which skips Deezer's placeholder. With WAVEFLOW_METADATA_IMAGES=off it is not built at all.
  • The narrow fetcher (src/portrait.rs). It fetches only when the host is on the provider's allowlist (e-cdns-images.dzcdn.net, cdn-images.dzcdn.net, exact match), over https, and when every address the name resolves to is public. IPv4 is refused by range: loopback, private, link-local, 100.64/10, 198.18/15, 192.0.0/24, 192.88.99/24, 240/4, unspecified, broadcast, multicast, documentation. IPv6 is admitted by what it is: only global unicast 2000::/3, minus Teredo, 6to4 and documentation, so unique local, link local, NAT64, IPv4-mapped and IPv4-compatible are refused without being listed. An automated security review flagged the first, denylist-only version twice, which led to the third and fourth commits. The checked address is pinned for the connection (ClientBuilder::resolve, on a client built per fetch from the shared builder, so no redirect and no proxy). The size ceiling is 10 MiB, enforced while reading. The type must be one of the three the artwork route serves, by header and by the bytes' own magic.
  • Three outcomes, as for Last.fm.
    • Unreached (the search, or the picture host, could not be reached): nothing is written, and the next visit asks again.
    • Miss: no artist, no picture, or a picture refused for what it is (off the allowlist, refused address, not an image, too large). Retrying would get the same answer, so it is kept for the short TTL.
    • Hit: the portrait.
  • One transaction (write_metadata_artist, src/database.rs) covers the artwork row, the cache row (now with image_hash), and the UPDATE artist SET artwork_hash … WHERE artwork_hash IS NOT ? … RETURNING. The sweeper deletes under the same gate, so it never sees the artwork row unreferenced. The file is written to the store before the gate is taken, staged then renamed, so no I/O runs under it.
  • The artist event: one upsert per artist row whose hash actually moved, each in its own library, with an empty payload. This is RFC-007 decision 6's rule for albums, and decision 6 is amended to say so. entity_type already admitted 'artist', so no migration was needed for events.
  • Relinked without a second download. The new migration 20261016000000_metadata_artist_image.sql adds metadata_artist.image_hash REFERENCES artwork(hash) ON DELETE SET NULL. A cache row therefore forgets an artwork row the sweeper took instead of naming a missing file. On each read, a cached hash is linked to any artist row with that name that lacks it (one unlocked EXISTS first, so the common case writes nothing). The link itself checks that the artwork row still exists.
  • Clients see it through coverArt, which every artist element already carries. No new route, and the three *ImageUrl fields stay absent (decision 10, revised).
  • Docs: RFC-007's amendment, RFC-011's Implemented by, the Deezer rows in operations.md, and a note in the artwork sweeper. Unlike a cover, a portrait cannot be re-extracted from the library, so operations.md says to back up artwork_dir with the rest.

Closes #268.

How I tested

  • cargo test --all-features: every target passes. enrichment grows from 20 to 26 tests, the library gains two unit tests (portrait), and the config test now covers deezer without a key.
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --all --check.
  • The test seam the issue asked to settle: Endpoints carries the image hosts and an AddressPolicy. Only the suite uses AllowLoopback, which also admits plain http, but only to a loopback address. the_default_policy_refuses_a_loopback_address (unit) asserts that the default refuses loopback and every private range, and the_default_policy_does_not_reach_a_loopback_host asserts that the fake image host is never contacted under the default, even with its host allowlisted.
  • Each test was made to fail under the change it guards, by an inversion applied and reverted mechanically:
test inversion
a_host_outside_the_allowlist_is_never_contacted the allowlist check is skipped
the_default_policy_refuses_a_loopback_address (unit) AllowLoopback is the default
the_default_policy_does_not_reach_a_loopback_host AllowLoopback is the default
the_artwork_row_and_the_hash_land_together_or_not_at_all the artwork row commits in its own transaction
an_unchanged_portrait_emits_no_event artwork_hash IS NOT ? becomes (… OR 1), an event on every fill
a_cached_portrait_is_linked_again_without_a_second_download no relink on read
  • The transaction test makes the link fail with a test-only RAISE(ABORT) trigger on artist.artwork_hash, then asserts that neither the artwork row nor the cache row exists.
  • The allowlist test serves the picture on 127.0.0.1 and allowlists only localhost. The reverse would have let the test pass whenever localhost resolved to ::1, where the fake does not listen, so it could not have failed for the reason it names.
  • The inversions also caught a lib unit test that no longer compiled (a CachedArtist built without the new field), which a run of the enrichment target alone had not shown.
  • Local CodeRabbit review: one trivial finding (the artwork source was a literal rather than the provider), fixed in the second commit.

Not verified

  • Deezer's terms of use were not checked, as the issue already says.
  • The two image hosts come from the core's tests and from Deezer's current answers as I know them. The real API was not called from here, so if Deezer serves from a third host, its portraits will be misses until that host is added.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Deezer becomes a provider for portraits only. The picture it names is
fetched under RFC-011 decision 8: an allowlisted host, https, every
resolved address public and the checked one pinned for the connection,
no redirect, a size ceiling, and a type confirmed by the bytes.

The artwork row, the cache row and every artist.artwork_hash sharing
the name are written in one transaction under the writer gate, and an
artist event is recorded only for rows whose hash moved. The cache row
keeps the hash, so an artist that lost its link is linked again
without a second download. RFC-007 decision 6 is amended accordingly.

Closes #268.

📝 Walkthrough

Changes: Portraits d’artistes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Schéma, liaison et événements
migrations-v2/*, src/database.rs, docs/rfcs/RFC-007-library-event-stream.md, src/services/artwork.rs
src/portrait.rs, src/outbound.rs
src/enrichment.rs, src/config.rs, src/lib.rs, src/services/artist_enrichment.rs, tests/enrichment.rs, docs/operations.md, docs/rfcs/RFC-011-metadata-enrichment.md

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e41d6

This change adds optional Deezer artist portraits with host, address, type and size checks, and no merge-blocking risk was found. Deezer's terms were not checked and the real API was not called, so portraits from any host outside the allowlist will be misses until that host is added.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e41d6

Portrait downloads are opt-in and constrained by destination, address, size, and content checks. Transactional updates preserve portrait associations and library notifications. No material security bypass was established, but external-client behavior and interrupted file recovery remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Portrait writes have instance-wide scope across same-name artist rows and the shared artwork store, not merely the requesting library. This is documented shared metadata ownership. The inspected artwork response still requires the requesting user's library membership before returning the stored image.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected catalog and Subsonic paths resolve an authorized artist ID before passing its stored name to enrichment. The subsequent portrait URL comes from the provider response, not a free-form URL parameter in those routes. This limits direct caller authority, but does not establish the external client's internal URL-construction behavior.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The provider-returned URL is revalidated before network access, with redirects and proxies disabled. Explicit nonstandard HTTPS ports are accepted, but only on allowlisted hosts at admitted addresses; that fact alone does not establish an independently attackable internal-network path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Network failures do not create cache misses, concurrent fills are bounded and coalesced, and a drop guard releases reservations. File publication uses staging and rename, but write failure or interruption can leave staging files; the existing collector preserves unrecognized names. No remotely triggerable resource-exhaustion path was established from this recovery limitation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider ownership-aware, age-bounded recovery of abandoned portrait staging files, using a recognizable namespace and coordination that cannot delete an active write. This would improve shared-disk failure containment after interruption; it is not a verified security finding.

Explanation
