The git hooks get the fixes that the review of the first rollout found.

  • A file that does not parse is listed alone as not formatted, with the first line of its error; the other staged files are still checked.
  • A staged .jl path that is not a file, such as a symlink to a missing file or to a directory, is refused with one line instead of a stack trace.
  • A commit that only deletes a .jl file runs the load test.
  • The package name is read with TOML.parsefile, so an indented or single-quoted name counts, and a Project.toml that does not parse is refused.
  • Both launchers decide without julia whether a check must run, so a julia that cannot start no longer blocks a commit with no .jl file or a push of a topic branch.
  • The lint stage and the load test run in a process group of their own, with a limit of 60 s and 600 s: at the limit the hook kills the group and returns, also when a child of fatou holds the output.
  • An interrupted push kills its suite 30 s after the interrupt if it still runs, and a refused push names both main and master.

The files are byte-identical to githooks/ (and scripts/test-layout.jl) of the ResearchHarness at commit a578570, as harness githooks --apply installs them. Only pre-commit and pre-push are executable.

Nothing else changes. After the merge, harness githooks reports nothing to do for this repository.

Review comments at @.githooks/pre-push.jl:
- Line 72: **Keep the kill timer active while the process group survives.**

If the `Pkg.test` process exits after SIGINT but its test child remains,
`process_running(p)` becomes false. The hook then closes the timer without
sending SIGKILL to that child. The child can outlive the hook, which defeats the
new 30-second cleanup limit. Check the process group before closing the timer,
rather than checking only `p`. Julia documents `process_running(p)` as a check
on the specified process.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Pre-commit checks now account for staged Julia file deletions and report errors when staged-file listings or project configuration cannot be read.
    • Formatting checks identify affected files individually; package loading and linting now have timeout handling.
    • Pre-push checks now process all ref updates and run the test suite for pushes to main or master.
    • Interrupted test runs are stopped more reliably, with a fallback after 30 seconds.
  • Improvements
    • Hooks skip Julia checks when no relevant staged files or gated branch updates are present.

The pre-commit hooks now select staged files and deletions before checking for Julia, and use bounded child-process handling. The pre-push hooks now gate test execution on remote refs for main or master and pass buffered ref lines to the Julia script.

Changes: Git Hook Updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pre-commit staged-change routing
.githooks/pre-commit, .githooks/pre-commit.jl
The launcher checks staged .jl and test/ paths before requiring Julia. The Julia script routes staged files and deletions to applicable checks and rejects staged .jl paths that are not files.
Pre-commit checks and process bounds
.githooks/pre-commit.jl
Formatter checks run per file. Project.toml is parsed with TOML. Package loading and child processes use timeouts and process-group cleanup.
Pre-push ref gating and project metadata
.githooks/pre-push, .githooks/pre-push.jl
The launcher buffers all ref lines and runs the Julia script only when a remote ref targets main or master. The script reads the project name with TOML and reports parse errors.
Pre-push test process handling
.githooks/pre-push.jl
On interruption, the test suite’s process group receives SIGINT, followed by SIGKILL after the grace period if it remains active. The failure message names both main and master.

Keep the kill timer active while the process group survives.

If the Pkg.test process exits after SIGINT but its test child remains, process_running(p) becomes false. The hook then closes the timer without sending SIGKILL to that child. The child can outlive the hook, which defeats the new 30-second cleanup limit. Check the process group before closing the timer, rather than checking only p. Julia documents process_running(p) as a check on the specified process. (docs.julialang.org)
