Diagnostic for #40. Not for merging, and not a fix.
An earlier version of this PR claimed that sending the build's output to a file fixes the timeout. That was wrong: the same config with only an empty commit added, 35643041, was killed at 1451 s.
The evidence and the current state are in #40: in failing builds even a script that stops itself at 780 s never returns, which points away from optmat's build. The earlier tallies here were miscounted; #40 has the corrected ones.
