Fixes #5542.

Description

What: Report signal-terminated nvidia-smi commands as failed GPU queries.

Why: Signal exits have negative return codes. The current check treats them as success and can report no GPUs.

Implementation: Check returncode != 0 and add regressions for exit codes 1, -9, and -15.

Types of changes

• Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
• New tests added to cover the changes.

Testing

• Focused pytest on the matching isolated module copy: 3 passed. The two signal cases fail before the fix.
• Python syntax and line lengths checked. Full repository style and test scripts could not run without a checkout.

Risk

Low. Only previously accepted negative exit codes now raise, like positive failures.
