Description

Add native FP8 E4M3 LoRA adapter support for routed-expert MoE layers in the PyTorch backend.

The change:

  • preserves native FP8 adapter weights in the PEFT cache and converts them within the grouped MoE LoRA execution path;
  • propagates per-module ranks so absent expert adapters are represented safely;
  • reserves stable, grow-only conversion workspace for eager prefill, decode, and CUDA graph replay;
  • fixes grouped-GEMM problem metadata lifetime and sizing that could otherwise produce illegal CUDA memory accesses; and
  • adds H100 integration coverage comparing native FP8 adapters with a paired BF16 LoRA reference.

The conversion workspace is currently reserved for every MoE LoRA run, including BF16 adapters. The measured overhead is acceptable for this initial implementation but remains a performance follow-up.

Test Coverage

  • Clean native Release build in the tekit development container on an H100.
  • H100 eager validation:
    tests/integration/defs/llmapi/test_llm_api_pytorch_moe_lora.py::test_qwen_moe_native_fp8_lora_matches_bf16_reference[eager]
    • passed in 236.55 seconds.
  • H100 CUDA graph validation:
    tests/integration/defs/llmapi/test_llm_api_pytorch_moe_lora.py::test_qwen_moe_native_fp8_lora_matches_bf16_reference[cudagraph]
    • passed in 75.98 seconds.
  • The validation covers model loading, PEFT-cache insertion and dtype, prefill, decode, actual graph replay, adapter-vs-base output change, and FP8-vs-BF16 logit-delta comparison.
  • Both cases are registered in l0_h100.yml and map to the H100 PyTorch post-merge stages.
  • Repository pre-commit checks and Python compilation checks passed.

Dev Engineer Review

Adds native FP8 E4M3 LoRA support for routed-expert MoE layers. The change preserves FP8 adapter weights, validates dtype and rank constraints, converts adapters in grouped-GEMM execution, propagates per-module ranks, and updates workspace handling.

Grouped-GEMM APIs now accept separate input and output dtypes. Verify API consistency, FP8 build and hardware guards, buffer sizing, and CUDA graph replay. Conversion workspace is reserved for MoE LoRA runs, including BF16 adapters; this adds a performance consideration. Review severity counts are unavailable because no current review findings were supplied.

QA Engineer Review

Tests cover FP8 cache preservation and dtype propagation, rank validation, mixed-dtype rejection, eager execution, CUDA graph replay, empty slots, scratch reuse, output changes, and FP8-versus-BF16 accuracy. The eager and CUDA graph integration cases are listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_h100.yml.

The supplied report says both H100 integration cases passed, and reports a clean Release build, passing pre-commit checks, and successful Python compilation checks. PR comments also report four CI runs with FAILURE status and one UNSTABLE run. The comments do not include failure details. Coverage verdict: sufficient.

Walkthrough

This change adds native FP8 adapter support for routed-expert MoE LoRA. It propagates adapter cache dtype through loading and execution, converts FP8 inputs for grouped GEMM, and supports a separate GEMM output dtype.

Changes

FP8 MoE LoRA

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dtype and stride contracts
cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/cuda_graph_grouped_gemm.*, cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/moe/cutlass/include/moe_lora_*, cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/moe/cutlass/moe_lora_problem_builder.cu, cpp/tests/unit_tests/kernels/moe/moeLoraProblemBuilderTest.cu
Grouped GEMM accepts an optional output dtype. The LoRA problem builder uses separate input and output element sizes for pointer strides. Tests cover FP8 inputs with BF16 outputs.
Native MoE FP8 execution
cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/moe/cutlass/include/moe_kernels.h, cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/moe/cutlass/moe_kernels.cu, cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/moe/cutlass/moeOp.cpp
The MoE runtime validates cache dtype, rank, and dimension constraints. It converts FP8 LoRA inputs, passes the compute output dtype to grouped GEMM, and retains scratch capacity when using a narrower dtype.
Adapter dtype loading and propagation
tensorrt_llm/_torch/custom_ops/torch_custom_ops.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/fused_moe_cutlass.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/peft/lora/*, tests/unittest/_torch/peft/test_moe_lora_extract.py, tests/unittest/_torch/peft/test_moe_lora_cuda_graph_params.py, tests/unittest/others/test_lora_manager.py
The loader resolves a common dtype across dense and expert LoRA weights and rejects mixed dtypes. The eager and CUDA-graph paths pass the selected dtype to the native MoE operation.
FP8 coverage and supported configurations
tests/unittest/_torch/peft/test_moe_lora_grouped_gemm.py, tests/unittest/_torch/peft/test_moe_lora_op.py, tests/integration/defs/llmapi/test_llm_api_pytorch_moe_lora.py, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_h100.yml, docs/source/features/lora.md
Tests cover FP8 adapters, rank alignment, scratch reuse, and eager and CUDA-graph execution. The documentation describes FP8 adapter requirements and supported MoE base-weight formats.

Load native FP8 routed-expert adapters and carry their cache dtype through
MoE grouped GEMMs. Reuse existing LoRA workspace with capacity checks and
store final deltas directly in the activation compute dtype.

Validate adapter dtypes, alignment and rank bounds; preserve scratch
capacity across dtype changes. Add FP32-reference, mixed-dtype, stride,
and CUDA graph regression coverage plus a small synthetic integration
fixture. Document FP8 rounding and adapter storage savings.

Pre-commit and CPU fixture checks passed. CUDA build and GPU validation
remain pending because Computelab reservations were unavailable.
