The persistent fused kernel uses the existing int kernel when candidate strides fit and a long long instantiation for larger supported shapes. It checks the persistent loop’s int token index and documents the entry point’s shape contract. The operator signature and Python routing remain unchanged.
The author reports 98 tests passed and 1 existing unsupported-hidden-size test skipped on SM107. Pre-commit passed on changed files. Review severity counts are unavailable because no current review findings were supplied.
QA Engineer Review
The test module adds comparisons between the persistent operator and an unfused reference, with and without residual addition. Tests cover candidate counts 2–9, token counts around the candidate-offset boundary, and larger prefill sizes. The author reports coverage of both sides of the N=9 boundary, including 42,799 and 42,800 tokens. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described indexing paths, based on the supplied test and validation reports.

Description
The persistent attention-residual kernel added in #19182 (trtllm::attn_res_add_rmsnorm_persistent_fwd) reads candidate source of the block residual at offset source * block_stride_r, with block_stride_r = T * 7168, and forms that product in int. source reaches N - 2, so the largest offset is (N - 2) * T * 7168 elements. #19182 guards it with two TLLM_CHECKs in invokeAttnResPersistentFusedFwd, so on main this is a hard limit rather than silent corruption: a forward past it fails with attn_res persistent fused: candidate offset ... overflows the kernel's int stride. At N = 9 candidates the limit is 42,799 tokens per forward (49,932 at N = 8, 59,918 at N = 7).
Kimi K3 mixes N = 9 candidates (8 block snapshots plus the running prefix sum) in its last block of layers, and the model's gate for the persistent kernel has no token ceiling. So with the persistent kernel enabled (KIMI_K3_ATTN_RES_TOPOLOGY set to 1, split or persistent; the default per_token never calls it), every forward of 42,800 tokens or more fails: a server with max_num_tokens: 49152 fails during warmup.
Changes:
The kernel, residual_addr and launch_fwd take the candidate stride as long long, so source * block_stride_r is formed in 64 bits for every shape. The two guards are removed.
In the PTX, only the producer warp's per-token address arithmetic changes; registers, spills, shared memory, launch bounds and occupancy are the same as on main, and the kernel is still compiled in 16 variants (N = 2..9, with and without the residual add).
The other offsets that grow with T were already 64-bit, so the remaining bound is the int token index. launch_fwd checks T - 1 + grid <= INT_MAX, the largest index the persistent loop reaches, and the op checks T <= INT_MAX before narrowing it into AttnResFwdParams. Neither can trigger in practice: 2^31 tokens of one bf16 [T, 7168] tensor are about 30 TB.
The header comments give the persistent entry point its own contract (B == 1, H == 7168, N in [2, 9], T bounded by the token index) instead of the per-token kernels' (T <= 16384).
The op signature and the Python routing do not change.
Test Coverage
New cases in tests/unittest/_torch/modules/kimi_k3_attn_res/test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py compare the persistent op with the unfused reference (attn_res_fwd, then RMSNorm), without and with the fused residual add; without the add they also check that the op returns layer_residual itself, as its contract states. The output is compared per 16,384-token slice, the most the reference takes per call (cosine > 0.9999 and relative L2 < 5e-3 in each slice), so an error confined to late tokens is not averaged away; the add form's updated residual must match exactly.
test_attn_res_persistent_matches_unfused (32 cases): every supported N, 2 to 9, at T = 1 (most CTAs get no token) and T = 213 (CTAs get unequal token counts).
test_attn_res_persistent_matches_unfused_at_prefill_token_counts (14 cases): both sides of the former int limit at N = 9 (T = 16384, 42799 and 42800), then T = 49152 at N = 9 and T = 65536 at N = 7, 8 and 9. Main's guards refuse the 10 cases from T = 42800 up. The largest case allocates a 7 GiB block residual.
Results on one SM107 GPU, from a source build with WARNING_IS_ERROR=ON; the build also contained the commits of a separate Kimi K3 dense DWDP PR (#21012), which change no attn_res code:
pytest tests/unittest/_torch/modules/kimi_k3_attn_res: 98 passed, 1 skipped. The skip is the existing @pytest.mark.skip on test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op_rejects_unsupported_hidden_size, which this PR does not touch.
pre-commit passes on the changed files.
test_attn_res_rmsnorm_op.py is already listed in l0_b200.yml (pre-merge) and l0_gb300_multi_gpus.yml (post-merge), so CI runs the new cases on B200 and GB300 with no test-list change; the results above are from SM107 only.

Walkthrough
The persistent fused attention-residual path now uses 64-bit candidate-stride arithmetic and checks token-index limits. The changes also clarify entry-point contracts and add output-parity tests across candidate counts and token sizes.

When with_add is false, actual_updated is not checked. The reference uses layer_residual directly, so output parity can pass if the first returned tensor regresses. The persistent implementation intentionally returns layer_residual with shared storage.

@YeonguChoe Thanks for the suggestion! I kept it signed on purpose. The offset feeds pointer arithmetic (base + offset), whose natural type is the signed ptrdiff_t, and the kernel's other T-dependent offsets are already long long (e.g. static_cast<long long>(token) * block_stride_m), so the candidate offset now matches them, and the int instantiation keeps main's exact code for every shape that already worked. Making it unsigned would turn the int operands (source, token) into unsigned in these expressions, which is easy to get wrong in later edits, while signed 64-bit already covers 2^63 elements, far more than any tensor. Signed arithmetic also lets the compiler assume no overflow when it simplifies the index math in the persistent loop.

…e offsets
The persistent attention-residual kernel formed source * block_stride_r in int. block_stride_r is
T * 7168 and source reaches N - 2, so with N == 9 any T above 42,799 tokens overflowed; the launcher
refused those shapes, which made max_num_tokens 49152 fail in warmup.
The kernel now takes the candidate stride as long long, so that product is formed in 64 bits, and
T = 49152 and 65536 work at N = 7, 8 and 9. In the PTX, only the producer warp's address arithmetic
changes; registers, shared memory and the launch configuration stay the same. launch_fwd checks the
remaining bound, the int token index (T - 1 + grid), and the op checks T before narrowing it into the
params. Tests cover N = 2..9, both sides of the former int limit and the production token counts,
against the unfused reference; without the residual add they also check that the op returns
layer_residual itself.

[None][fix] Kimi K3 attn_res persistent fused kernel: 64-bit candidate offsets

Applied CodeRabbit's nitpick in 48d059e: in the no-add cases, _assert_persistent_matches_unfused now also asserts actual_updated.data_ptr() == layer_residual.data_ptr(). The op returns layer_residual itself on that branch on purpose (see the NOTE in attn_res_add_rmsnorm_persistent_fwd), so a regression to a copy or a fresh tensor now fails these tests instead of passing unnoticed.
