[TRTLLM-14973][fix] Refuse or honour every input on the B12x MoE path - #21057
B12x admission checks reject unsupported run contexts before kernel dispatch. They wait for the input-ready event and restrict B12x output requests to BF16.
B12x eligibility requires BF16 activations. The NVFP4 leaf rejects forced dynamic activation quantization so the resolver can select CUTLASS where supported.
B12x declares that run_moe reuses buffers. The external-communication scheduler serializes multi-chunk calls and clones outputs before reuse. The fused-communication scheduler rejects backends with this declaration.
B12x refuses LoRA when a layer index is missing and LoRA parameters are non-empty. An empty bookkeeping dictionary is allowed. The shared LoRA predicate distinguishes active MoE LoRA from unrelated adapters.
No current review findings were supplied. The reported CPU test result is 589 passed; the author also reports RTX PRO 6000 reproductions without incorrect forwards in tested configurations. These results are not independently verified. CI comments report two runs aborted and give no outcome for the third.
QA Engineer Review
Three test files changed: test_cute_dsl_b12x_moe_backend.py, test_moe_backend.py, and test_moe_impl.py. They add coverage for B12x eligibility and fallback, run-context refusals, output types, LoRA handling, event ordering, and scheduler behavior with reused buffers. The integration test lists contain entries for test_moe_backend.py, but the supplied matches do not establish that the new scheduler tests are selected. No matching entries were found for the other two test files. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md — Documents B12x dtype and quantization limits, buffer reuse, scheduler behavior, and fallback paths. Verify that the instructions match runtime behavior.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/fused_moe_cute_dsl_b12x.py — Adds run-context admission checks, input-event waiting, BF16 restrictions, and NVFP4 dynamic-quantization rejection. Verify that unsupported requests fail before dispatch and supported requests retain expected outputs.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/impl_contract.py — Adds a buffer-reuse capability field and a dynamic-quantization rejection reason. Verify default behavior for existing backends and handling of the new rejection reason.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/moe_scheduler.py — Serializes chunks and clones outputs for buffer-reusing backends. Verify output integrity and that backends with fresh outputs retain stream overlap.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/quantization.py — Updates comments on B12x activation dtype and buffer reuse; no runtime change is reported. Verify that the documentation matches buffer ownership.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/cutlass/lora.py — Adds a shared predicate for detecting MoE LoRA on the current layer. Verify eager and CUDA-graph parameter handling, including unrelated adapters.
tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_cute_dsl_b12x_moe_backend.py — Adds tests for eligibility, refusal cases, output types, LoRA scope, and event ordering. No matching CI or manual-QA list entry was found.
tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_moe_backend.py — Adds scheduler tests for reused outputs, chunk serialization, and overlap with fresh-output backends. The CI lists contain selectors for this test module, but the supplied evidence does not confirm selection of the new scheduler tests.
tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_moe_impl.py — Adds resolver tests for float16 and dynamic-quantization fallback, plus build-mode behavior. No matching CI or manual-QA list entry was found.
Description
The B12x MoE leaves (CuteDslB12xNvfp4FusedMoE, CuteDslB12xW4a16Nvfp4FusedMoE; SM120/121) answered several requests they cannot serve with a different result instead of an error, and returned wrong output for a forward larger than moe_config.max_num_tokens. This PR makes each of those either refuse or work.
Input
Before
After
do_finalize=False, routed-expert LoRA on the layer, logits-only routing, all-to-all, non-bf16 output_dtype on the b12x route
not honoured: the b12x route read only x, the routing pair, x_sf (refused when set) and comm_plan.moe_output; the CUTLASS prefill route never reads do_finalize, lora_params or router_logits
refused in the shared _admit_run_context, before either route runs; x_ready_event is joined before a kernel reads x
float16 activations
admitted, although B12xMoEWrapper reads and writes bfloat16 only
supported_dtypes = BF16_ONLY; declined with DTYPE_UNSUPPORTED, the layer falls back to CUTLASS
force_dynamic_quantization (NVFP4)
honoured on the CUTLASS prefill route only; decode chunks used the load-time scales
declined in can_implement with the new DYNAMIC_QUANT_UNSUPPORTED; the layer falls back to the CUTLASS NVFP4 leaf
A forward split into chunks
every chunk returned the last chunk's output (see below)
each chunk kept
The served configuration (bfloat16, routing applied by the scheduler, no communication strategy, do_finalize=True, one chunk) is unchanged. Through ConfigurableMoE, none of the first row's refusals fires today: the scheduler always hands B12x precomputed routing, no all-to-all, no x_ready_event, and drops lora_params for backends without MoE LoRA. They guard direct run_moe callers and future scheduler changes.
The six arguments named in TRTLLM-14973
The ticket's six arguments are the keyword arguments of the B12x run_moe before #17411. The old _get_backend_kwargs never sent them, because it matched __class__ == CuteDslFusedMoE exactly and the B12x subclass fell through every branch. #17411 replaced that fan-out with one MoERunContext for every backend, so all six now reach the leaf. Two were still dropped on the b12x route, and this PR handles them:

do_finalize, lora_params, logits-only routing and x_ready_event are not among the six; they are the other MoERunContext fields, refused or joined for completeness.
Multi-chunk forwards
A B12xMoEWrapper built with use_cuda_graph=True (every layer served with a cuda_graph_config) writes each call into one preallocated output buffer and returns a view of its leading rows; _SHARED_MOE_OUTPUT_BUF also shares that buffer across layers, and the wrapper keeps one workspace and its grid-barrier locks across calls. ExternalCommMoEScheduler._forward_multiple_chunks kept each chunk's run_moe result and concatenated them after the last chunk, so all chunks were views of the same rows. It also ran even chunks on the aux stream with nothing ordering them against the odd chunks, so two chunks of one layer could be in flight on the same buffers.
Copying the output in the leaf fixes the first problem but not the second, and both chunking and stream overlap belong to the scheduler (MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md, "Do NOT add forward-execution policy inside backends"). So the backend declares the fact and the scheduler acts on it:
MoEInputRequirement.run_moe_reuses_buffers (new, default False): run_moe may return a view of a buffer the next call overwrites, and two calls in flight on different streams would share scratch.
Both B12x leaves set it.
For such a backend, _forward_multiple_chunks runs every chunk on one stream and clones each chunk's output before the next chunk runs. Other backends and the single-chunk path are unchanged; the B12x layers have no communication strategy, so the overlap they lose hid no combine.
Reproduced on an RTX PRO 6000 (SM120), one layer, compared against the same layer run on each chunk alone:
Configuration (CUDA-graph wrapper)
Before
After
W4A16_NVFP4, 2 x 512 tokens
20/20 forwards wrong, chunk 0 == chunk 1, max error 20.8 (reference max 17.6)
0/20
W4A16_NVFP4, 2 x 32 tokens
200/200 wrong
0/200
NVFP4 (b12x route), 2 x 32 tokens
200/200 wrong
0/200
W4A16_NVFP4, leaf output cloned, chunk 0 held back ~1 ms so the two chunks overlap
10/10 wrong (max error 25.9); a longer hold hung the GPU
0/10
Without CUDA graphs the wrapper allocates a fresh output, and those runs were correct before and after.
Test Coverage
CPU (pytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/_torch/moe: 589 passed):
test_cute_dsl_b12x_moe_backend.py
test_run_moe_refuses_what_neither_route_honours, test_run_moe_admits_lora_params_without_moe_lora_on_its_layer (only MoE LoRA on the layer is refused; lora_params with adapters elsewhere still reaches the kernel), test_b12x_route_refuses_an_output_dtype_it_cannot_write, test_cutlass_route_writes_the_requested_output_dtype, test_run_moe_joins_the_input_ready_event_before_its_kernel, test_run_moe_hands_back_the_kernel_output_untouched
test_can_implement_rejects_unsupported_activation_dtype (float16 now rejected), test_can_implement_declines_forced_dynamic_quantization
test_b12x_multi_chunk_forward_keeps_every_chunk[nvfp4|w4a16]: drives ExternalCommMoEScheduler through a real B12x leaf whose wrapper stand-in returns the same storage on every call. Fails before the fix (the whole first chunk wrong, chunk 0 issued on the aux stream).
test_multi_chunk_forward_overlaps_chunks_of_a_backend_that_allocates_its_output: a backend without the declaration keeps the aux-stream overlap.
test_fused_comm_forward_refuses_a_backend_that_reuses_its_buffers: FusedCommMoEScheduler does not copy chunks out, so it refuses a backend that declares run_moe_reuses_buffers.
All are under unittest/_torch/moe, which l0_cpu.yml runs with -m cpu_only.

The B12x MoE leaves (SM120/121, NVFP4 and W4A16_NVFP4) answered several
requests they cannot serve with a different result instead of an error, and
returned wrong output for a forward larger than moe_config.max_num_tokens.
run_moe inputs: the b12x route handed the FlashInfer kernel x and the routing
pair and read nothing else of MoERunContext. The shared mixin now admits each
run_moe call before either route runs: it refuses do_finalize=False,
lora_params, logits-only routing and all-to-all, none of which the leaf can
honour on its b12x or its CUTLASS NVFP4 prefill route, and joins
x_ready_event before a kernel reads x. The b12x route also refuses an
output_dtype other than bfloat16. The served configuration (bfloat16, routing
applied by the scheduler, no communication strategy, do_finalize=True) is
unchanged.
float16: B12xMoEWrapper reads and writes bfloat16 only, but the gate admitted
float16. The mixin now declares supported_dtypes = BF16_ONLY, so a float16
layer is declined with DTYPE_UNSUPPORTED and falls back to the CUTLASS leaf.
force_dynamic_quantization: the NVFP4 leaf honoured it only on its CUTLASS
prefill route; decode chunks used the scales transform_weights snapshots at
load time, so one layer ran two quantization regimes. FlashInfer 0.6.18
quantizes the FC2 input inside the fused kernel against a fixed scale, so the
leaf declines the setting in can_implement with a new reason,
DYNAMIC_QUANT_UNSUPPORTED, and the layer falls back to the CUTLASS NVFP4 leaf.
Multi-chunk forwards: a B12xMoEWrapper built with use_cuda_graph=True writes
each call into one preallocated output buffer (shared across layers by
_SHARED_MOE_OUTPUT_BUF) and returns a view of its leading rows, and it keeps
one workspace across calls. ExternalCommMoEScheduler kept each chunk's
run_moe result and concatenated them after the last chunk, so the layer
returned the last chunk's output in place of every earlier one; it also ran
even chunks on the aux stream, unordered against the odd chunks, so two
chunks of one layer could be in flight on the same buffers. On an RTX PRO
6000 every two-chunk W4A16_NVFP4 and NVFP4 b12x-route forward returned chunk
0 equal to chunk 1, and holding chunk 0 back by about 1 ms corrupted 10/10
W4A16 forwards even with the leaf output cloned. MoEInputRequirement gains
run_moe_reuses_buffers, both B12x leaves set it, and for such a backend
_forward_multiple_chunks runs every chunk on one stream and clones each
chunk's output before the next chunk runs. Other backends and the
single-chunk path are unchanged.

The scheduler now handles chunk outputs from backends that reuse buffers. The B12x MoE leaves declare BF16 support and validate dynamic quantization, run context, and output dtype constraints. Tests and guide examples cover these changes and related fallback behavior.
The capability contract identifies backends that reuse run_moe buffers. For those backends, the external-communication scheduler runs chunks on one stream and clones non-final chunk outputs. The fused-communication scheduler rejects such backends. Tests check output preservation and stream behavior.

The B12x leaves require BF16 activations. The NVFP4 leaf rejects forced dynamic quantization, and both leaves validate run context before dispatch. B12x output requests must be unset or BF16. Tests and guide examples cover eligibility, routing, rejection cases, and CUTLASS fallback.
Empty LoRA parameters are accepted, but that behavior needs a regression test. No merge-blocking failure is established.

… scheduler
run_moe_reuses_buffers is declared on the shared MoEInputRequirement, but
only ExternalCommMoEScheduler honours it. FusedCommMoEScheduler._run_chunks
keeps the tensor each chunk returned and never copies it, so a FUSED_COMM
backend declaring the field would hand torch.cat the same storage for every
chunk. Reject that combination in forward() instead of leaving a silent
wrong-value path, and record the restriction on the field and in the guide.
While there, skip the clone of the last chunk on the external-comm path: no
further run_moe runs before the torch.cat that follows, and the cat copies
that chunk anyway.

Comment and message wording only, no behaviour change:
- The token_final_scales refusal also fires on the None that
apply_router_weight_on_input leaves behind, not only on a caller that
wants the leaf to route; name both causes.
- The output_dtype refusal cited a B12xMoEWrapper constructor argument this
repository never passes. State the kernel fact and the leaf's own gate
instead, and that this check is the backstop for a direct run_moe caller.
- The W4A16 quantize_input docstring described the kernel's bf16 / fp16
range as if it were the leaf's; keep the kernel fact and add that the leaf
admits bf16 only.

…ast chunk
Self-review follow-up. Three places still said the scheduler copies EVERY
chunk of a multi-chunk forward out of the reused buffer, which stopped being
true once the last chunk's clone was dropped: the trailing torch.cat copies
that one. Two of them are the correctness argument for folding every B12x
layer onto one shared output buffer, so they have to be precise. Also state
the rule once in the guide instead of appending a retraction to it.

Reject unsupported output dtypes before the CUTLASS route.
For a prefill context with output_dtype=torch.float8_e4m3fn, the CUTLASS branch replaces the request with BF16. The fused-MoE dispatcher explicitly rejects FP8 output, so this change silently returns the wrong dtype instead of rejecting the request.

lora_params describes every adapter of the forward, so refusing any
non-None lora_params would also refuse a forward whose adapters target
attention alone, which the B12x kernels leave untouched. Move the
predicate behind CutlassMoELoraMixin._moe_lora_active into the module
function moe_lora_active(lora_params, layer_idx), shared by the mixin and
the B12x leaves, and refuse only when this layer carries routed-expert
MoE LoRA tensors.
Also drop the float16 wording from the W4A16 comment in the B12x weight
method; the B12x leaves admit bfloat16 activations only.
Signed-off-by: xxi <xxi@nvidia.com>
moe_lora_active checks only routed-expert module names. The current test covers no layer adapter and MoE LoRA on another layer. A regression that rejects any adapter on self.layer_idx can pass both cases. Add a same-layer ATTENTION_QKV case to test_run_moe_admits_lora_params_without_moe_lora_on_its_layer; its existing B12X_ROUTES parametrization and assert log == [kernel] will check dispatch for every route.

The current LoRA case uses only the eager layer map. In CUDA-graph mode, moe_lora_active reads cuda_graph_params.layer_module2key instead. A regression in that path could allow current-layer routed-expert LoRA to pass B12x admission and reach a kernel without this test detecting it.
Add a CUDA-graph fixture to the existing refusal matrix. The module already imports types and LoraModuleType.

…r index
``moe_lora_active`` answers False for every ``lora_params`` when ``layer_idx``
is None (cutlass/lora.py:64-65), so narrowing the refusal to it turned the
unknown-layer case into silent admission: a context that does carry MoE LoRA
reached the kernel and came back without the delta, where the previous
``ctx.lora_params is not None`` test raised.
``layer_idx`` is None by default (create_moe.py:57, impl_base.py:112) and this
refusal exists for the caller that drives ``run_moe`` directly, which is the
caller most likely not to pass one. Keep the narrowing for a known layer and
refuse any adapter when there is no index to read it by.
An empty ``lora_params`` dict now passes instead of being refused: it asks for
no fusion, which is what a known layer with no MoE adapter already does.
Signed-off-by: xxi <xxi@nvidia.com>
…ere to fix it
Three exactness fixes to the refusal added in the previous commit.
The docstring and the comment said "any adapter", but the condition is the
truthiness of ``lora_params``, which holds for a dict carrying only the
per-forward ``num_seqs`` bookkeeping key and no adapter entry at all. Say
"every ``lora_params``" so the prose and the condition agree.
The message said "build the leaf with layer_idx". A layer built through
``ConfigurableMoE`` is handed ``layer_idx=None`` on purpose and gets the real
index mirrored on afterwards (``_BACKEND_SYNC_ATTRS``), so that sentence points
a reader at the one place it must not change. Name ``create_moe_backend``, the
entry point that takes the index, and the other way out.
The test pinned only the MoE-LoRA input. Parametrize it with the adapter-free
dict too: that is the input the same leaf admits once it knows its layer, so it
is where the two states differ.
Signed-off-by: xxi <xxi@nvidia.com>
_admit_run_context checks if ctx.lora_params: before the no-index refusal, so {} should dispatch. The current no-index test covers only nonempty dictionaries. Add a parametrized case in tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_cute_dsl_b12x_moe_backend.py that sets leaf.layer_idx = None, passes lora_params={}, and asserts log == [kernel] for every B12X_ROUTES entry.

No matching entries were found for the other two test files. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.Per-File QA Perspective

The B12x MoE leaves (
CuteDslB12xNvfp4FusedMoE,CuteDslB12xW4a16Nvfp4FusedMoE; SM120/121) answered several requests they cannot serve with a different result instead of an error, and returned wrong output for a forward larger thanmoe_config.max_num_tokens. This PR makes each of those either refuse or work.do_finalize=False, routed-expert LoRA on the layer, logits-only routing, all-to-all, non-bf16output_dtypeon the b12x routex, the routing pair,x_sf(refused when set) andcomm_plan.moe_output; the CUTLASS prefill route never readsdo_finalize,lora_paramsorrouter_logits_admit_run_context, before either route runs;x_ready_eventis joined before a kernel readsxB12xMoEWrapperreads and writes bfloat16 onlysupported_dtypes = BF16_ONLY; declined withDTYPE_UNSUPPORTED, the layer falls back to CUTLASSforce_dynamic_quantization(NVFP4)can_implementwith the newDYNAMIC_QUANT_UNSUPPORTED; the layer falls back to the CUTLASS NVFP4 leafThe served configuration (bfloat16, routing applied by the scheduler, no communication strategy,
do_finalize=True, one chunk) is unchanged. ThroughConfigurableMoE, none of the first row's refusals fires today: the scheduler always hands B12x precomputed routing, no all-to-all, nox_ready_event, and dropslora_paramsfor backends without MoE LoRA. They guard directrun_moecallers and future scheduler changes. The six arguments named in TRTLLM-14973
The ticket's six arguments are the keyword arguments of the B12x
run_moebefore #17411. The old_get_backend_kwargsnever sent them, because it matched__class__ == CuteDslFusedMoEexactly and the B12x subclass fell through every branch. #17411 replaced that fan-out with oneMoERunContextfor every backend, so all six now reach the leaf. Two were still dropped on the b12x route, and this PR handles them:is_sf_swizzledcomm_plan.input_sf_swizzledx_sfmust beNoneoutput_dtypectx.output_dtypetuner_num_tokens,tuner_top_k_tuner_shapes), only under all-to-allmoe_outputcomm_plan.moe_outputout_tensorenable_alltoallcomm_plan.enable_alltoallep_size == 1)do_finalize,lora_params, logits-only routing andx_ready_eventare not among the six; they are the otherMoERunContextfields, refused or joined for completeness.Multi-chunk forwards
A
B12xMoEWrapperbuilt withuse_cuda_graph=True(every layer served with acuda_graph_config) writes each call into one preallocated output buffer and returns a view of its leading rows;_SHARED_MOE_OUTPUT_BUFalso shares that buffer across layers, and the wrapper keeps one workspace and its grid-barrier locks across calls.ExternalCommMoEScheduler._forward_multiple_chunkskept each chunk'srun_moeresult and concatenated them after the last chunk, so all chunks were views of the same rows. It also ran even chunks on the aux stream with nothing ordering them against the odd chunks, so two chunks of one layer could be in flight on the same buffers.Copying the output in the leaf fixes the first problem but not the second, and both chunking and stream overlap belong to the scheduler (
MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md, "Do NOT add forward-execution policy inside backends"). So the backend declares the fact and the scheduler acts on it:MoEInputRequirement.run_moe_reuses_buffers(new, defaultFalse):run_moemay return a view of a buffer the next call overwrites, and two calls in flight on different streams would share scratch._forward_multiple_chunksruns every chunk on one stream and clones each chunk's output before the next chunk runs. Other backends and the single-chunk path are unchanged; the B12x layers have no communication strategy, so the overlap they lose hid no combine.Reproduced on an RTX PRO 6000 (SM120), one layer, compared against the same layer run on each chunk alone:
Without CUDA graphs the wrapper allocates a fresh output, and those runs were correct before and after.
