[#21102][feat] Add an opt-in pygrpc-native server for OpenEngine - #21103
The change adds opt-in pygrpc-native support for the OpenEngine server. grpcio remains the default, and the openengine-native extra installs pygrpc-native>=0.5.0,<1. The CLI restricts non-default selection to gRPC with the OpenEngine protocol. The server checks the native dependency before model initialization. The PR description states that internal coordinator and node servers remain on grpc.aio.
The benchmark results and test outcomes are author-reported. They are not independently verified here.
QA Engineer Review
The change modifies two unit-test files, a CLI API-stability reference, and the CPU integration test list. OpenEngine tests cover both server implementations when pygrpc-native>=0.5.0 is available, including streamed Generate behavior. The optional-dependency test covers missing and outdated installations. The CPU test list includes the OpenEngine test file and the dependency-check test.
Coverage needs follow-up because native test cases are skipped when pygrpc-native is unavailable in CI. Test execution status is not established by the supplied evidence.
Per-File QA Perspective
setup.py: Adds pygrpc-native>=0.5.0,<1 to the openengine-native extra. Verify the extra installs the optional dependency without changing default installation behavior.
tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py: Adds --openengine-grpc-server, defaults to grpcio, and restricts native selection to gRPC with the OpenEngine protocol. Verify the default and invalid option combinations.
tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/server.py: Adds server selection and checks the native dependency before model initialization. Verify both implementations, server options, and early failure when the dependency is missing or outdated.
tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/README.md: Documents the alternate server, installation, and multi-frontend support. Verify the instructions match the CLI and dependency behavior.
tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_openengine.py: Exercises OpenEngine behavior with both implementations, including streaming. The file is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.
tests/unittest/grpc/test_grpc_optional.py: Adds test_openengine_pygrpc_native_is_checked_before_engine_start for missing and outdated dependencies. The test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.
tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml: Adds the dependency-check test and includes the OpenEngine test file in the CPU test list.
tests/unittest/api_stability/references/trtllm_serve_cli.yaml: Records the new CLI option, accepted values, and default. Verify the reference matches the CLI declaration.
Adds --openengine-grpc-server {grpcio,pygrpc-native} to trtllm-serve. The default, grpcio, keeps today's behavior. With pygrpc-native, OpenEngineServer creates its server with pygrpc_native.aio.server(), a drop-in replacement for grpc.aio.server() that does HTTP/2 and the per-call gRPC work in Rust, outside the GIL. The servicers, the health service and _SERVER_OPTIONS are unchanged.
The dependency is a new openengine-native extra (pygrpc-native>=0.5.0,<1). The base package and the openengine extra don't change.
launch_server checks that pygrpc-native is installed and recent enough before it loads the model, and fails with the install command if it isn't.
Extra frontends rerun the same command line, so they all get the flag. 0.5.0 is the first release that honors grpc.so_reuseport, which they need.
The internal coordinator and node servers stay on grpc.aio.
Results
The real trtllm-serve --grpc --grpc-protocol openengine path, with only the engine mocked: requests go through the executor proxy, an MPI-spawned worker, the ZMQ result path and Qwen3 detokenization, and a CPU executor emits one token per active request every 2 ms through LlmRequest.create_response(). One frontend pinned to 4 cores, 32 input and 128 output tokens, runs alternating between the two servers. Medians, with the range in brackets.

TTFT p50 at saturation dropped from 7-8 s to about 3 s. The worker and the load generator stayed well below one core, so the frontend was the bottleneck in both cases. Both servers streamed identical tokens, and none of the 34 runs had an error. This ran CPU-only in Docker on Windows (WSL2), so the ratios mean more than the absolute numbers. I can share the harness if you'd like to run it on your hardware.
Differences from grpc.aio
These are the ones that apply to OpenEngine:
A connection whose client doesn't answer a keepalive ping is closed after grpc.keepalive_timeout_ms (10 s here), not after grpc's 60 s ping timeout.
The client ping limits (max_pings_without_data, min_ping_interval_without_data_ms) are accepted but not enforced.
OpenEngine only has unary and server-streaming methods, and from the context it uses abort, cancelled, code and invocation_metadata, which all behave as in grpc.aio.
Dependency
pygrpc-native is Apache-2.0 and I maintain it. I didn't add the extra to ATTRIBUTIONS-Python.md, since that file covers the default dependencies and the other optional extras aren't listed there either.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_openengine.py: the tests that start a real server now run on both servers through a grpc_server fixture. The pygrpc-native cases are skipped when it isn't installed, as in CI today. Should I add it to requirements-dev.txt so CI runs them?
tests/unittest/grpc/test_grpc_optional.py::test_openengine_pygrpc_native_is_checked_before_engine_start: a missing or too old pygrpc-native fails with the install hint.
tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_openengine.py::test_generate_streams_through_the_server: a Generate call streams its tokens and finish event through a real listener on both servers.
tests/unittest/api_stability/references/trtllm_serve_cli.yaml: the new option.

Walkthrough
OpenEngine serve adds an opt-in pygrpc-native server implementation and keeps grpcio as the default. The launcher checks the native package version before serving and creates the selected server with the configured options.
Changes
OpenEngine native gRPC server
Layer / File(s)
Summary
CLI option and dependency setup.py, tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py, tests/unittest/api_stability/references/trtllm_serve_cli.yaml
The CLI adds --openengine-grpc-server, defaulting to grpcio. It accepts pygrpc-native only when gRPC and the OpenEngine protocol are enabled. The openengine-native extra declares pygrpc-native>=0.5.0,<1. The CLI reference records the new option.
Server selection and validation tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/server.py, tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/README.md
The launcher checks that pygrpc-native is installed at version 0.5.0 or newer, then passes the selected implementation to server creation. The server uses the selected implementation with the configured options. The README documents the option, installation, and frontend behavior.
Tests exercise OpenEngine server behavior with both implementations and check missing or outdated native packages. The CPU integration list adds an OpenEngine gRPC test.

Cover a successful Generate stream on pygrpc-native.
The grpc_server fixture runs the listener tests with both implementations, but those tests cover only control and health RPCs. The existing listener-level Generate test uses the default grpcio server and tests a cleanup failure, not a successful native stream. Add a small fake-engine stream test in tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_openengine.py and assert response tokens and completion for both fixture values.

Hi @tanmayv25@jthomson04, sorry for the ping. Since this builds on #19870 and #19760, I'd really appreciate your thoughts whenever you have time, even if it's just whether this direction makes sense. Happy to rework or close it. Thanks!
The native cases in test_openengine.py construct OpenEngineServer with frontend=None, so they set grpc.so_reuseport to 0. The frontend-backed coordinator tests use the default grpcio server, and the frontend lifecycle test also calls launch_server without selecting pygrpc-native. Add a parameterized native case that constructs two frontend-backed servers on one fixed port, starts them, and checks an RPC through the shared listener. This is a coverage improvement for the intended multi-frontend path, not a demonstrated production failure.

Add a parameterized native-server test in the OpenEngineServer test suite that
creates two servers with frontends enabled on the same fixed port, starts both,
and verifies an RPC through the shared listener. Configure the test to use the
native gRPC backend rather than the default grpcio server.
Assert that a token arrives before generation finishes.
_StreamingResult yields both results without waiting, and the test collects the complete RPC before checking responses. A server that buffers tokens until generation finishes can therefore pass. Gate the second engine result with an asyncio.Event, assert the first token inside the receive loop, then release the gate.
Suggested fix
- responses = [r async for r in inference.Generate(request, timeout=5)]+ responses = []+ async for response in inference.Generate(request, timeout=5):+ responses.append(response)+ if len(responses) == 1:+ assert response.WhichOneof("event") == "token"+ assert response.token.text == "A"+ gate.set()
Pass gate to _StreamingResult and await it before yielding the second result. A buffering server then cannot deliver the first token before the gate is released.
