Dev Engineer Review

This change reorganizes executor tests around engine, runner, decoder, and warmup ownership. It adds component-level fixtures and behavioral tests. The supplied change summary reports no production implementation changes.

The change removes engine/test_runners.py and removes 438 lines from test_distributed_warmup_oom.py. The new tests in engine/runners/test_common.py exercise ModelEngine._initialize_runner for four runner families and check the unregistered base-runner error. The removed distributed warmup agreement and OOM-recovery coverage still needs a clear replacement or rationale.

The graph-step gather selector and duration entries now point to decoder/test_inputs.py. Three decoder-input waivers replace three previous entries; the Helix waiver remains. Lint configuration removes test_pytorch_model_engine.py from the listed generated and legacy selections.

The PR description reports baseline and branch suite comparisons on an H100-NVL node, and successful Ruff and commit hooks. It also reports that Blackwell CED and SM100 step-gather paths remain unvalidated because of hardware guards. These results are author-reported; no independent test run is available here. Current review-finding counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

The change adds or expands unit coverage for engine lifecycle and refit, decoder inputs and runner routing, graph selection and replay, warmup behavior, multimodal handoff, KV-cache handling, and speculative draft-length scheduling. It removes runner integration tests and distributed warmup agreement and OOM-recovery tests. Follow up on whether the removed OOM-recovery scenarios remain covered.

The graph-step gather test is selected in test-db/l0_b200.yml, and its duration entries now name decoder/test_inputs.py. A search of changed test-module names found a CI-list match for decoder/test_warmup.py; it found no matching CI or manual-QA entries for engine/test_model_call.py, test_cuda_graph_runner.py, or test_model_engine.py. The PR description reports validation of several suites, but the evidence does not establish whether all changed tests run through another mechanism. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • .pre-commit-config.yaml, legacy-files.txt, pyproject.toml, ruff-legacy.toml: These configuration changes remove test_pytorch_model_engine.py from generated or legacy lint selections. Verify that the intended lint coverage remains after test relocation.
  • tests/integration/defs/.test_durations: The graph-step gather duration keys now name decoder/test_inputs.py; the recorded durations remain unchanged.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_b200.yml: The B100/B200 selector now runs the graph-step gather test from decoder/test_inputs.py.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/waives.txt: Three decoder-input waivers replace three previous entries. The Helix waiver remains active.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/__init__.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/__init__.py: These files add license headers only. No test behavior changes.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/test_dummy_requests.py: Covers draft-token buffer widths for general and CUDA-graph warmup requests. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/test_graphs.py: Covers graph-batch promotion and selection, speculative capture arguments, dynamic draft lengths, warmup metrics, and cleanup paths. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/test_inputs.py: Covers input preparation, KV-token accounting, graph gathering, MRoPE, CED replay, and multimodal scheduling. Its graph-step gather test is selected in test-db/l0_b200.yml.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/test_metadata.py: Renames the existing decoder speculative metadata test module; no test changes are reported. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/test_runner.py: Covers forward routing, graph replay and fallback, metadata and compile-state scoping, and warmup forwarding. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/test_warmup.py: Refocuses coverage on decoder warmup setup, tuning, cleanup, and failure paths; earlier engine-focused warmup cases were removed. The changed-module search found a CI-list match in test-db/l0_b200.yml.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/test_warmup_agreement.py: Covers warmup batch agreement, missing communicators, rank disagreement, and error outcomes. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/decoder/utils.py: Adds decoder test factories and fixtures. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/test_common.py: Tests initializer dispatch for four runner families and the unregistered base runner error. This directly exercises ModelEngine._initialize_runner; no matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/test_encoder.py, test_encoder_decoder.py: Add or refine test typing; no runtime behavior changes are reported. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/test_mm_encoder.py: Covers multimodal forward handling, payload/context mismatches, embedding splits, and metadata handoff. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/test_no_kv_cache.py: Covers no-KV runner configuration, lifecycle, inference context, and forward behavior. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/test_pooling.py: Covers pooling forward behavior and output identity when logits are disabled. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/runners/utils.py: Adds runner construction helpers for pooling and multimodal encoder tests. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_input_buffers.py: Covers CUDA graph replay with optional draft capacity and pointer stability. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_model_call.py: Covers model-call context, error propagation, live stream containers, and invalid construction. The changed-module search found no matching CI or manual-QA entry.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_multimodal.py: Adds checks for disabled encoder cache and encoder sequence-length selection, alongside typing updates. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_runners.py: Removes runner selection, initialization, forwarding, resource, warmup, and model-call tests. Check that replacement component tests retain any required integration coverage.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine_test_utils.py: Adds engine, model, KV-cache, and warmup fixtures with resource cleanup. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_cuda_graph_runner.py: Covers graph-key behavior, fallback, speculative warmup state, and cleanup. The changed-module search found no matching CI or manual-QA entry.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_cuda_graph_runner_gpu.py: Covers GPU graph padding, KV accounting, dummy-request cleanup, preallocation, and stream ordering. The PR description reports this file among the validation suites; no matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_distributed_warmup_oom.py: Removes warmup agreement and OOM-recovery coverage while retaining distributed warmup guard tests. Check whether replacement tests cover the removed recovery scenarios.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_hang_detector.py: Adds CPU-only cases for rank-crash detection, disabled MPI, communication errors, and missing grace periods. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_model_engine.py: Adds engine cleanup, graph ownership, refit, warmup, delegation, and NVTX behavioral tests. The changed-module search found no matching CI or manual-QA entry.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_pytorch_model_engine.py: Removes the prior model-engine and decoder test module. Check that relocated tests preserve needed coverage.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/speculative/hw_agnostic/test_draft_len_schedule.py: Covers dynamic and static draft-length resolution, request-buffer updates, and disabled speculation. No matching CI or manual-QA entry was established in the supplied search results.

Description

Engine tests mix orchestration with runner and CUDA graph component behavior, and their fixtures assemble dependencies through engine internals. Reorganize the suites to follow implementation ownership and construct component fixtures directly, with deterministic KV teardown and retained engine-to-runner integration coverage.

Consolidate redundant ModelEngine checks into behavioral coverage for refit, NVTX, callbacks, warmup and cleanup. Migrate the affected CI selectors, waiver entries, duration keys and lint configuration with the tests.

Test Coverage

Validated baseline and branch suites on the same H100-NVL node and shared venv, checking editable import paths and comparing collected node IDs, parameters and CPU marks. Ruff and required commit hooks passed.

Key suites under tests/unittest/_torch/executor/:

  • test_model_engine.py
  • engine/runners/decoder/test_inputs.py
  • engine/runners/decoder/test_runner.py
  • engine/runners/decoder/test_warmup.py
  • test_cuda_graph_runner_gpu.py

The existing Helix waiver is preserved. Blackwell CED and SM100 step-gather paths remain unvalidated on H100-NVL because of their existing hardware guards.

PR Checklist

  • Description explains the problem and resulting behavior.
  • Coding guidelines and required hooks checked.
  • Relevant regressions validated and hardware gaps documented.
  • Affected CI selectors and waiver paths updated.

Restore runner-family dispatch coverage.

test_runner_selection tests resolve_runner_type directly. It does not test the result through ModelEngine._initialize_runner. A wrong family-to-initializer mapping can pass all current cases. The base parametrized dispatch test covered four runner families, but no equivalent current test remains.

1065-1066: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert which resource manager the runner requests.

get_resource_manager.return_value = object() returns the same object for any argument. The test then expects an AssertionError from _validate_resources. If the runner queried the wrong ResourceManagerType, this test would still pass. test_warmup_total_timing_and_kv_cache_cleanup has the same gap at lines 1085-1086.

Add an expected-argument check after the call. Use the manager type the runner is expected to query.

Proposed fix
         model_engine._runner.warmup.assert_called_once_with(resource_manager)
+ resource_manager.get_resource_manager.assert_called_with(
+ ResourceManagerType.KV_CACHE_MANAGER
+ )

Based on learnings: flag tests that use an argument-insensitive return_value with outcome assertions but no expected-argument checks.

In the affected warmup test, verify that the runner requests
ResourceManagerType.KV_CACHE_MANAGER by asserting the argument passed to
resource_manager.get_resource_manager after the call. Apply the same check in
test_warmup_total_timing_and_kv_cache_cleanup so both tests catch requests for
the wrong manager type.

tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_cuda_graph_runner.py: 1

203-211: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert that maybe_get_cuda_graph passes peft_cache_data_type to get_graph_key.

The test name says a dtype change falls back to eager. runner.get_graph_key.return_value always returns fp8_key, whatever arguments it receives. If maybe_get_cuda_graph stopped forwarding peft_cache_data_type, the key lookup would still miss in graph_metadata and the result would still be (None, None, None). The test would pass, so it does not cover the dtype path.

Add an expected-argument check. The positional order follows test_graph_lookup_forwards_promoted_context_ids.

Proposed fix
         self.assertEqual(result, (None, None, None))
+ runner.get_graph_key.assert_called_once_with(
+ batch, None, None, None, frozenset(), torch.float8_e4m3fn, False, None
+ )

Based on learnings: flag tests that use an argument-insensitive return_value with outcome assertions but no expected-argument checks.

tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_model_call.py: 1

36-38: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert that ModelCaller forwards its keyword arguments to model.forward.

Mock(return_value="replacement") returns the same value for any arguments. first_forward also ignores kwargs. The test checks only the return value and the attribute context. It still passes if ModelCaller.__call__ drops attn_metadata or spec_metadata before it calls forward.

Add an argument check on the replacement mock.

Proposed fix
             model.forward = Mock(return_value="replacement")
             assert caller(attn_metadata=metadata) == "replacement"
+ model.forward.assert_called_once_with(attn_metadata=metadata)
             assert attrs["spec_metadata"] is None

Based on learnings: flag tests that use an argument-insensitive side_effect/return_value with outcome assertions but no expected-argument checks.

Coverage accounting for the move: of the 146 test names in the three removed/trimmed files, everything in the warmup-agreement, general-OOM policy, Mamba error-policy and all-ranks-crashed groups is present under the new paths (decoder/test_warmup.py, decoder/test_warmup_agreement.py, test_hang_detector.py), and the new files are collected via the unittest/_torch/executor directory entry in l0_cpu, l0_h100, l0_dgx_b300 and l0_gb300_multi_gpus. So the two concerns in the auto-generated description (lost OOM coverage, missing CI entries) do not hold. The waives/durations/l0_b200 repoints match the new class and method names.

Two things did get lost and should be restored before merge:

  1. resolve_runner_type has no tests left. The four tests in the old engine/test_runners.py (test_resolve_runner_dispatches_startup_families, ..._checks_encode_only_before_pooling, ..._checks_mm_encoder_before_non_generation, ..._does_not_require_runtime_dependencies) were not carried over, and grep -rn resolve_runner_type tests/unittest/ is empty. test_model_engine_initializes_runner_by_family tests the class→initializer map, not the llm_args/model→class decision. There is also no encode_only=True anywhere under tests/unittest/_torch/executor/, so EncoderRunner selection and the encode_only vs mm_encoder_only precedence are unguarded. See inline.

  2. Stale references in tracked docs. .claude/skills/perf-host-optimization/SKILL.md:197 and :200, and .claude/skills/perf-host-optimization/references/hot-path-files.md:117 still point at tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_pytorch_model_engine.py and PyTorchModelEngineTestCase. Please repoint them (test_position_id_preparation and test_pad_generation_requests now live in engine/runners/decoder/test_inputs.py, test_warmup in decoder/test_warmup.py).

Minor: test_prepared_inputs_is_frozen_and_preserves_kwargs_identity was dropped; test_inputs.py still checks kwargs identity but nothing asserts PreparedInputs is immutable. Worth a one-liner in engine/runners/test_common.py.

Please also paste the result of a local pytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_model_engine.py tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_cuda_graph_runner.py run in the description. The last commit fixed a CUDA call in a cpu_only test, and the PR description only reports the H100 run.
