[TRTLLM-17390][fix] Size the separate draft-KV mirror from request history - #21281
The change sizes separate draft-KV mirrors from target request history and chunk position. It also handles disaggregated generation initialization and adds a page of retention for windowed DFlash/DSpark draft pools.
DFlash tracks base pages and rebases context reads to request-owned pages. The paged-latent preparation API now accepts base_pages; callers must use the updated signature. The stated unified target-and-draft cache path is unchanged.
Test execution results were not supplied.
QA Engineer Review
Modified tests cover mirror sizing and view selection, disaggregated initialization, resize failures, windowed page retention, DFlash page ownership and rollback, and kernel behavior.
test_spec_tail_kernels.py appears in the l0_b200.yml CI list. test_kvcm2_integration.py appears there only with the selector test_helix_retention_uses_rank_local_ranges; the changed tests are not shown as listed. No matching entries were found for test_dflash_draft_kv.py. No manual-QA list entries were found for these files.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. Confirm that the changed tests run in the intended CI or manual-QA workflow.

Description
A one-engine external drafter on its own draft KV pool kills the executor on long prompts in two places. The affected drafters are DFlash, DSpark, PARD and DraftTarget one-model (is_external_drafter()). The separate pool is the fallback used whenever the target and draft caches are not unified.
Aggregated serving with block reuse off. Every rank raises Draft KV cache context resize failed for request N: could not resize to 131015 tokens from about 131k tokens of context.
Disaggregated generation worker. The same error comes from the DFlash or DSpark drafter, the only drafters that keep a separate pool under a cache transceiver.
In both cases KVCacheManagerV2._prepare_draft_resources sizes the draft mirror for the whole prompt at once. Without joint KV reuse it reads the legacy draft request view (use_draft_model), whose position and chunk only a separate draft engine advances. A one-engine drafter has no such engine, so the view stays at position 0 with the whole prompt as one chunk. A disaggregated generation-init request is presented the same way. A sliding-window draft pool cannot hold either.
The disaggregated path also writes into other requests' draft pages on main. The DFlash drafter starts every request on the generation worker at slot-local position 0. The mirror lives in absolute positions: after the first generation step, update_resources sets its history to the request length, and a sliding window releases the low pages. From then on the drafter's writes and reads at positions 0.. go through unbacked block-table entries, which resolve to physical page 0, another request's page. The same happens to a request that loses its drafter slot and comes back.
The fix keeps one coordinate system: the drafter and its draft mirror both use absolute positions, and an empty drafter context is expressed as a base, not a new origin.
kv_cache_manager_v2.py
_mirror_uses_draft_view is false for the draft manager of an external drafter, so its mirror follows the target's position and chunk. MTP, Eagle and two-engine drafters keep the draft request view and the existing resize, history included.
For an external drafter, a context chunk that continues a mirror already covering [0, chunk start) passes the chunk start as history. Sliding-window layers drop the pages below the window, and the mirror holds its window plus the chunk in flight. A DFlash or DSpark mirror first seen past position 0 (a prefix this worker did not compute) takes the chunk start as history too, since that drafter stores the chunk at its target position over a base hiding the prefix. Any other mirror first seen past position 0 keeps the existing sizing.
A disaggregated generation-init mirror keeps absolute capacity (prompt + draft headroom) and takes the transferred prompt as history. Its drafter K/V for the prompt does not exist on this worker, so a sliding window trims the mirror to its tail. Later update_resources calls keep advancing the history in the same coordinates.
The draft mirror of a CUDA-graph warmup dummy gets the same history_hint as the target cache, so a windowed draft pool backs only the dummy's window.
A DFlash or DSpark draft pool keeps one page below each attention window (_draft_slot_trail_tokens). A drafter slot seeded on a page boundary trails its request by up to a page less one token, so the far edge of its window reads below the mirror's window; the extra page keeps every entry it reads on a page the request holds. The drafter's own windows come from its model config and are unchanged. The pool layout, the quota conversion and the budget-split estimators all charge the extra page: one page per windowed layer group per request. For MiniMax-M3.1's drafter (5 layers, 4 KV heads of 128, bf16, 32-token draft pages, 4096-token window) that is 320 KiB per request before tensor-parallel sharding, 0.8% of its window.
_mirror_resize_error builds the context and generation resize errors. The pool diagnostic lists each live mirror's capacity, history and logical block count, plus the attention windows.
dflash.py
DFlashSpecMetadata.prepare() seeds every generation row that gets a fresh drafter slot (the first step on a disaggregated generation worker, or a request whose slot was evicted). The slot starts empty at the first position of the page holding the row's absolute position, with every page below it as its base. On a windowed pool that does not keep the trailing page (a V1 manager), the slot starts at the position itself, with the base rounded up.
The block decode reads a per-slot block table rebased past the base, and a context length shortened by it, in both the eager and the fused paged-latent preparation. It reads only what the slot stored and writes its block onto the request's own pages. The base is snapshotted and rolled back with the context lengths.
In aggregated serving, a context tail after a prefix this worker did not compute is stored at its target position on the managed pool, with the prefix pages as its base. On a pool that joins the target's block reuse, which holds the prefix's drafter K/V, the tail is always stored at its target position, including for workers that read the unrebased table.
A worker that prepares generation steps with its own kernels and reads the unrebased table (the experimental Kimi K3 workers) opts out via _ctx_reads_rebased_view and keeps slot-local numbering.
spec_tail_kernels.py: decode_draft_block_table reports each row's extent (one past its last backed entry) instead of the number of backed entries. Positions are indexed from entry 0, so on the python V2 backend a window that released low entries no longer shrinks the bound on positions a request may address. The default cpp backend counts every row full and is unchanged. The fused generation preparation takes the base pages and returns how far each read row is shifted.
The unified target+draft path from #20486 is untouched. When the caches are unified there is no separate draft manager and this code does not run. A future transfer of the drafter's context to the generation worker fits the same coordinates: it fills the window below the seed and lowers the base.
Validated on 4x GB300 with MiniMax-M3.1-Flash and its sliding-window DSpark drafter (K=7):
Aggregated, TP4, block reuse off. 9/9 needles exact at 32k, 131k and 262k, 6 concurrent 131k/262k requests, and a 524k needle, with 0 resize failures and 0 skipped CUDA-graph warmups. Chat acceptance length is 4.458, identical to main. Main dies at the first 131k needle.
Disaggregated 1P1D, TP2 + TP2. On the generation worker, 8/8 needles exact up to 524k, 4 concurrent 131k/262k requests, and chats alongside a decoding 262k request, with 0 resize failures. Generation-worker chat acceptance length is 4.241 / 4.275 (before / after the long requests), against main's 4.212 on the same node in an earlier run. Main dies at the first 131k needle.
Disaggregated with block reuse on the generation worker. The same checks pass. Generation-worker chat acceptance length is 4.289, against main's 4.289 / 4.260 on the same node in an earlier run.
The trailing draft page does not move acceptance: on the same nodes, the revision without it gives 4.458 aggregated, 4.209 / 4.334 disaggregated and 4.283 with block reuse on.
test_unpaired_draft_mirror_context_resize (mocked cache): which request view the mirror reads, and the capacity and history of the context resize, including a mirror first seen past position 0 with and without a trailing page, and disaggregated generation init under both views.
test_unpaired_draft_mirror_that_cannot_grow_raises_with_the_pool_diagnostic and test_exhausted_pool_fails_explicitly_on_an_empty_fresh_mirror: the explicit errors and the per-mirror diagnostic.
test_only_an_external_drafters_draft_manager_reads_the_target_view (CUDA): DFlash, DSpark, PARD, DraftTarget, MTP and Eagle3, for draft and target managers.
test_windowed_draft_mirror_backs_what_the_next_chunk_attends (CUDA): two-chunk prefill on a sliding-window pool with reuse off, for Eagle3 and DFlash.
test_gen_init_draft_mirror_survives_generation_updates (CUDA): a 64k-token disaggregated request on a windowed pool that holds 8k tokens, through three generation steps including update_resources. The history follows the request and the pages from the prompt end stay backed.
test_disagg_generation_drafter_writes_stay_on_its_own_draft_pages (CUDA): the same request with another request owning the pool's low pages, driven through the real DFlashSpecMetadata.prepare(), the context store and the block decode's read and append. It runs with and without a reuse-addressable pool, and after a slot loss and reseed. Every page the drafter writes or addresses belongs to the request, and the slot reads exactly what it stored.
test_trailing_drafter_slot_reads_only_pages_its_request_holds (CUDA): the real windowed draft manager and the real DFlash seed, at 2, 7, 31 and 127 tokens of lag on 128-token pages, over 600 generation steps. Every block-table entry the drafter's window reads stays on a page the request holds. Without the trailing page, the 7, 31 and 127 cases read released entries.
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/sharing/test_staging_lender.py: the joint DFlash draft pool's window check accounts for the trailing page.
tests/unittest/_torch/speculative/hw_agnostic/test_dflash_draft_kv.py: the store start (including a paired pool read from position 0), the base for a store, the rebased rows and view (including the block written into an owned page), the generation seed (page-aligned, window shorter than a page, private arena, clamping), the base reset on a reused slot, the base surviving rollback, and the window check.
tests/unittest/_torch/speculative/test_spec_tail_kernels.py: the block-table extent with released low entries, and the fused preparation matching the eager one with slot bases.
test_dflash_dummy_slot.py, test_dflash_copy_skip.py, test_dflash_guided_rollback.py, test_draft_kv_resume_pressure.py: stubs updated for the base pages.

Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/test_kvcm2_integration.pytest_unpaired_draft_mirror_context_resize(mocked cache): which request view the mirror reads, and the capacity and history of the context resize, including a mirror first seen past position 0 with and without a trailing page, and disaggregated generation init under both views.test_unpaired_draft_mirror_that_cannot_grow_raises_with_the_pool_diagnosticandtest_exhausted_pool_fails_explicitly_on_an_empty_fresh_mirror: the explicit errors and the per-mirror diagnostic.test_only_an_external_drafters_draft_manager_reads_the_target_view(CUDA): DFlash, DSpark, PARD, DraftTarget, MTP and Eagle3, for draft and target managers.test_windowed_draft_mirror_backs_what_the_next_chunk_attends(CUDA): two-chunk prefill on a sliding-window pool with reuse off, for Eagle3 and DFlash.test_gen_init_draft_mirror_survives_generation_updates(CUDA): a 64k-token disaggregated request on a windowed pool that holds 8k tokens, through three generation steps includingupdate_resources. The history follows the request and the pages from the prompt end stay backed.test_disagg_generation_drafter_writes_stay_on_its_own_draft_pages(CUDA): the same request with another request owning the pool's low pages, driven through the realDFlashSpecMetadata.prepare(), the context store and the block decode's read and append. It runs with and without a reuse-addressable pool, and after a slot loss and reseed. Every page the drafter writes or addresses belongs to the request, and the slot reads exactly what it stored.test_trailing_drafter_slot_reads_only_pages_its_request_holds(CUDA): the real windowed draft manager and the real DFlash seed, at 2, 7, 31 and 127 tokens of lag on 128-token pages, over 600 generation steps. Every block-table entry the drafter's window reads stays on a page the request holds. Without the trailing page, the 7, 31 and 127 cases read released entries.test_windowed_draft_pool_backs_only_the_window_of_a_generation_dummy(CUDA).tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/sharing/test_staging_lender.py: the joint DFlash draft pool's window check accounts for the trailing page.tests/unittest/_torch/speculative/hw_agnostic/test_dflash_draft_kv.py: the store start (including a paired pool read from position 0), the base for a store, the rebased rows and view (including the block written into an owned page), the generation seed (page-aligned, window shorter than a page, private arena, clamping), the base reset on a reused slot, the base surviving rollback, and the window check.tests/unittest/_torch/speculative/test_spec_tail_kernels.py: the block-table extent with released low entries, and the fused preparation matching the eager one with slot bases.test_dflash_dummy_slot.py,test_dflash_copy_skip.py,test_dflash_guided_rollback.py,test_draft_kv_resume_pressure.py: stubs updated for the base pages.PR Checklist
