[None][test] Improve store driver conformance for fixed pools and shutdown - #21314
The changes clarify the store-driver contract and strengthen its conformance checks. They do not change runtime implementation code.
READY means an object is readable now, not that it is retained permanently. put and get may raise DriverRejected when a driver cannot serve a request.
Drivers must preserve progress across repeated drain(0.0) calls and return True when required work and evidence are complete. The conformance checks also cover drain calls that block or do not return.
allocate_rows supports fixed-row-size pools. Each declared crash direction is checked on a separate driver.
QA Engineer Review
The modified unit-test file covers allocation hooks, drain behavior, cleanup when calls block or do not return, and conformance pairing.
The new pairing test verifies that each check passes its conforming driver and fails the driver that breaks its rule. The supplied results report 463 passed and 108 skipped; these results were not independently run.
No matching entries were found in the test-db/ or qa/ integration lists. These changes are unit tests, not integration tests.
Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described contract and conformance changes.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/blob/README.md — Adds driver guidance for SDK concurrency, callbacks, peer-visible memory names, drain sampling, and peer fault cases. Verify that the guidance matches supported driver behavior.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/blob/store.py — Clarifies READY retention, DriverRejected cases, and zero-budget drain behavior. Verify consistency with backend teardown and memory-protection rules.

Description
The store driver contract left three things unsaid, and the conformance suite assumed two shapes of driver that not every store has. No runtime code changes.
Contract wording (blob/store.py, blob/README.md):
READY means readable now, not for good: a store may evict the object later, and one kept in a process goes with that process; a later get reports MISS or FAULT.
put and get may raise DriverRejected once the driver can serve no more, as after its store failed under it.
drain is polled with no budget on every teardown round of the backend and never given a wait; a call with no budget must not reset what the driver has established since its first drain.
README rules 7–10 for driver authors: keep the SDK's concurrency rules; callbacks only record; names a peer matches are computed alike on both sides; evidence from sampling is newer than the first drain and covers the store's own work. A store with peers brings its own cross-process fault cases.
Conformance suite (testing/):
allocate_rows(slot_bytes, rows, fill, memory_kind) hook, defaulting to allocate, so a suite whose pools each hold one row size can carve an endpoint from the right pool.
The crash check runs each declared direction on a driver of its own: a driver that refuses new work after its store raised is allowed by the contract, so the second direction never meets the first one's driver.
New check test_drain_polled_without_a_budget_turns_true_once_nothing_runs: drain(0.0) answers False while a get is in the store and forces no end on it, then turns True once nothing runs, without any call having a budget. Paired with DrainNeedsABudget in broken_drivers.py.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/disaggregation/blob (CPU-only, already in l0_cpu.yml): 463 passed, 108 skipped, against 452 / 108 on main.
The new conformance check runs in every suite subclass (test_memory_driver.py, test_together_driver.py), and the pairing test test_each_conformance_check_passes_the_driver_and_fails_the_one_breaking_its_rule[drain turns true without a budget] shows it fails DrainNeedsABudget.
test_every_check_has_a_broken_driver_and_each_driver_one_pairing confirms the new check and driver are paired once.

The suite can hand a driver the row size of an endpoint, checks each crashing direction on a driver of its own, and polls drain with no budget as the backend does. The contract says what READY promises after the fact, when a driver may refuse new work, and how drain is called.

Summary
Driver guidance and store contracts tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/blob/README.md, tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/blob/store.py
The guidance covers SDK call serialization, callback handling, peer-visible memory names, and drain evidence. Store documentation clarifies object availability, put rejection, and zero-budget drain behavior.
Allocation and operation isolation tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/blob/README.md, tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/testing/driver_conformance.py, tests/unittest/_torch/disaggregation/blob/test_memory_driver.py
The harness adds an overridable row-allocation hook that defaults to allocating the total byte count. It retains memory when access cannot be ruled out and stages crash-after-record checks on separate drivers for each declared direction. Tests cover both allocation paths and memory retention.
The conformance check polls zero-budget drains during and after blocked gets. It runs drain calls off-thread and tracks calls that do not return for cleanup. Fixtures and tests cover budget-dependent drains, drains waiting for active gets, missing blocked-get signals, and drain calls that do not return.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title follows the repository template with the [None][test] prefix and states the main change: improving store driver conformance tests for fixed pools and shutdown. The raw summary confirms the changeset centers on the conformance suite (allocate_rows hook, drain checks, crash-direction checks) and the store contract wording. The title is specific enough for a teammate scanning history to understand the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the core content: a summary of contract wording changes in blob/store.py and blob/README.md, the new allocate_rows hook, the per-direction crash check, and the new drain test paired with DrainNeedsABudget. It also reports test coverage with specific test names and pass/skip counts, and it states that there are no runtime code changes. The template's Description and Test Coverage sections are filled in. The PR checklist is ticked. The description keeps the template's HTML comment block at the top, which is harmless but is leftover template text. The description does not mention the separate drain-polling check changes in the README rules beyond a brief note, but the core intent is clear.

Allow eviction in the existing-object conformance check.
When a store evicts the first object after its READY put, the second put can legitimately publish zzzzzzzz. This check still requires the next get to return the original aaaaaaaa, so a driver that follows the clarified READY contract fails conformance. Preserve the overwrite assertion when the first object still exists; add a separate case for eviction. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the existing-object conformance check around the READY assertion to
handle both outcomes after the second put: preserve the overwrite assertion when
the first object remains present, and add a separate eviction case that accepts
the second put’s published value when the first object was evicted.
Add a regression case for driver isolation after a crash.
The new second-driver path fixes a driver that refuses calls after its first store crash. The existing CrashingStore raises on both operations but does not exercise that refusal, so its tests would also pass with the old shared-driver loop. Add a test in tests/unittest/_torch/disaggregation/blob/test_memory_driver.py with a driver that records the first crash and then rejects further work. Assert that both directions reach separate drivers and produce row faults. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions: “A bug fix without a practical regression test that would have failed before the fix” is a material coverage gap.

A drain that waits in spite of its budget fails the check instead of hanging it, and a harness whose driver call never returned asks nothing more of that driver.

Track a getter that remains alive after the join timeout.
If the staged get does not return after unblock(), started["op"] may remain unset. The subsequent assertion fails, but Harness.cleanup() sees neither that getter in h.hung nor its operation in h.ops; it can unregister and release the endpoint while the getter still uses its span. Add the live getter to h.hung before leaving the harness, so cleanup retains its memory. The supplied code does not establish a safe return path for a driver that ignores the unblock signal. Retain stray memory when submission raises another exception.
If start() raises after a put or get reaches the store, _refuses_stray skips UNRELEASED_MEMORY.append(stray). The harness may have no operation handle to track, so the stray buffer can be freed while the driver can still access it. Only DriverRejected certifies that nothing escaped. Retain stray before re-raising every other submission error. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The Mooncake scatter reads the lender's slots directly, so a put whose
access reads as ended while the scatter still runs lets the lender reuse
memory the store is still reading. Until now only the conformance suite's
blocked-put check caught that. NVIDIA#21314 drops that assertion from the
suite, since a driver that stages the payload in memory of its own may
truthfully end access early. This driver test keeps the property pinned
for Mooncake: with the scatter held inside the SDK, the put's access has
not ended, and once it returns the row is READY and access has ended.
