Adds a per-model preparation step to the fev-bench connector and uses it to prepare data for TimesFM3 as in the published TimesFM-3 fev-bench evaluation.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added forecasting benchmarks for GIFT-Eval and fev-bench, including model runs, result tracking, and leaderboard generation.
    • Added a public utility for converting prediction tables into quantile values and levels.
  • Documentation
    • Added benchmark setup, run, and evaluation guidance, including notes on licenses and published-result differences.
    • Clarified how quantile predictions are represented.

Adds shared SDM forecasting support and benchmark workflows for GIFT-Eval and fev-bench. Also adds sdm.evaluation.to_quantiles, which converts prediction columns into target- and quantile-shaped tensors.

Changes: Forecasting Benchmarks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared forecasting adapter
benchmark/forecasting/model.py, benchmark/forecasting/README.md, benchmark/forecasting/__init__.py
Adds model configuration, CLI options, batched forecasting, variate splitting, and quantile selection. Documents the shared adapter and TimesFM3 license.
GIFT-Eval prediction and evaluation
benchmark/forecasting/gift_eval/*, benchmark/forecasting/README.md

fev-bench task preparation and evaluation
benchmark/forecasting/fev_bench/*, benchmark/forecasting/README.md
Adds an SDM adapter with TimesFM3 preprocessing, a task runner, and an evaluator that writes SQL and MASE leaderboards.

Quantile Conversion API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Quantile conversion, export, and validation
sdm/evaluation/regression.py, sdm/evaluation/__init__.py, test/evaluation/test_regression.py, docs/source/icl.md
Adds and exports to_quantiles. The helper validates target-grouped quantile columns and returns reshaped predictions with their quantile levels. Tests cover valid grouping and invalid column ordering.

Keep quantile levels fractional for integer numerical blocks.

TableTensor.from_tensor routes integer tensors to categorical columns. However, TableTensor.__new__ accepts an integer tensor through its numerical argument without conversion. For that input, values.new_tensor(levels) inherits the integer dtype and truncates fractional levels.

Use a floating dtype for levels while preserving the prediction dtype when it is already floating and retaining the prediction device.

Review comment at @sdm/evaluation/regression.py at line 61:
Update the return expression in the function containing `return values,
values.new_tensor(levels)` so quantile levels remain fractional for integer
predictions: preserve `values.dtype` when it is floating-point, otherwise use
the default floating-point dtype, while keeping the levels tensor on `values`’
device.

Validate quantile column syntax before deriving targets.

rpartition("q") accepts salesq10 and salesq90 as one target named sales, although the documented multi-target form requires sales__q10 and sales__q90. It also accepts q-10; int("-10") / 10 ** 3 produces the invalid level -0.01. Reject non-empty prefixes without __ and non-decimal suffixes before computing levels.

Suggested fix

Validate each quantile column in the parsing logic around rpartition before
deriving targets or levels: reject non-empty prefixes that do not end in “__”
and suffixes that are not decimal digits. Preserve support for q<digits> and
<target>__q<digits> column names, and raise ValueError for invalid syntax.

Impute missing strings before hashing.

If a string covariate has a missing observation, fillna("") converts it to the hash of an empty string. The subsequent ffill().bfill() cannot use the observed category. Fill missing strings from observed values before hashing so this path matches the stated imputation behavior.

Update the string-covariate handling before `df[column]` assignment so missing
values are forward- and backward-filled from observed strings before hashing;
preserve the existing zero fallback when the entire column is missing.

Include forecast settings in completion identity.

Both runners skip saved rows without checking run settings. A changed --max_context_size or --batch_size can therefore leave the previous score in the output while the new forecast is not computed. The fev-bench row stores vars(args), but completion checks only task_name, so this metadata does not prevent stale reuse. Key rows by forecast-affecting settings or reject mismatched saved settings. If settings remain outside the identity, document that users must delete the output directory before rerunning.

Ensure rows from runs with different settings are not treated as complete.
