Problem

The Module-B noise filter defaults to gemini/gemini-2.5-flash-lite, which Google has retired for new users. On a fresh setup every classification batch 404s:

This model models/gemini-2.5-flash-lite is no longer available to new users. Please update your code to use models/gemini-3.5-flash-lite ...

Result: 0 chunks classified, knowledge_queue stays empty — the classify path is dead out of the box.

Fix

Replace the default with gemini/gemini-3.5-flash-lite — the lite-tier successor Google's own 404 message recommends. It keeps Module B on a cheap, dedicated classifier per the config's design note ("Module B is the cheap gate and must not pull in the chatbot's heavier model") rather than moving to the heavier gemini-2.5-flash tier.

Updated in both pins plus the two live doc references:

  • .env.example — CRE_NOISE_FILTER_LLM_MODEL
  • application/utils/noise_filter/config_loader.py — DEFAULT_LLM_MODEL (the env fallback reads this var)
  • application/utils/noise_filter/llm_classifier.py — docstring "default …" reference
  • docs/gsoc_2026_module_b/module_b_runbook.md — default-value table

Model-id change only — no loader refactor, no classify-logic change.

Verified against the Gemini API

1-token probes with a real key:

Model Result
gemini/gemini-2.5-flash-lite (current default) ❌ 404 — retired for new users
gemini/gemini-3.5-flash-lite (this PR) ✅ OK
gemini/gemini-2.5-flash ✅ OK, but heavier tier — rejected to preserve the cheap-gate design
gemini/gemini-2.0-flash, gemini/gemini-1.5-flash ❌ 404

gemini-3.5-flash-lite additionally produced a full real classify run on ASVS 5.0/en (461 chunks → KNOWLEDGE/NOISE) with no model errors.

Re: the CodeRabbit note on 2.5-family new-user eligibility — gemini-3.5-flash-lite is a newer family and Google's documented successor to the retired id, chosen specifically to avoid that caveat.

Deliberately NOT changed

docs/gsoc_2026_module_b/final_metrics.md still cites gemini-2.5-flash-lite — it records the model those published metrics were actually measured on; changing it would falsify the historical result.

Checks

  • git grep gemini-2.5-flash-lite → only the historical final_metrics.md remains.
  • application/tests/noise_filter/config_loader_test.py — 9/9 pass.
  • black --check + mypy clean on touched modules.
  • Diff: 4 files, 4 insertions / 4 deletions.

…flash

gemini/gemini-2.5-flash-lite is retired by Google for new users, so every Module-B classification batch 404s on a fresh setup. Bump both places that pin the default (.env.example and config_loader.DEFAULT_LLM_MODEL) plus the docstring and runbook references to the live gemini/gemini-2.5-flash id already used elsewhere in the repo. final_metrics.md is left unchanged as a historical record of the model those metrics were measured on.

No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Noise filtering now defaults to Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite instead of Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite when no model is specified.
    • Updated the setup example and runbook to reflect the new default, so the documented configuration matches the out-of-the-box behavior.
    • Existing configuration options remain available for selecting a different model.

Walkthrough

The noise-filter LLM model default changes to gemini/gemini-3.5-flash-lite. The environment example, classifier module documentation, and runbook show the updated model.

…-3.5-flash-lite

gemini/gemini-2.5-flash-lite is retired by Google for new users, so every Module-B classification batch 404s on a fresh setup. Replace it with gemini/gemini-3.5-flash-lite -- the lite-tier successor Google's own 404 message recommends, which keeps Module B on the cheap gate (not the chatbot's heavier model) per the config's design note. Verified working against the Gemini API (2.5-flash-lite 404s; 3.5-flash-lite succeeds and produced a full ASVS classify run). Updates both pins (.env.example, config_loader.DEFAULT_LLM_MODEL) plus the docstring and runbook references. final_metrics.md is left unchanged as a historical record of the model those metrics were measured on.
