Fixes #1166

What

The C.3 calibration gate and the C.4 decision report in scripts/evaluate_librarian.py dropped rows that never reached them (no audit, or an empty reranked shortlist) and printed the survivors as if they were the selection. A hollowed-out calibration set could print PASS and exit 0. Same class as #1139 / #1140 for the explicit gate; this is the other two gates, in code I wrote in W5.

Change

  • calibration_eligible(rows): the positive + hard_negative rows in the selection, the number the gate is supposed to count against.
  • report_calibration(): still fits T and prints ECE, now also prints reached calibration: used/eligible, labels the ECE as in-sample, and fails the gate when any eligible row did not reach the fit, with a line saying how many and why. T is still returned so C.4 can report.
  • report_decision_accuracy(): counts rows with an expected decision versus rows that had an audit, and prints the gap when there is one. Still informational, still returns 0.

The degenerate-set guard (fewer than two classes) is unchanged. The explicit gate is untouched, so this merges cleanly with #1140 either way.

Tests

CalibrationCoverageTest, nine tests: eligible counts only the two calibration slices; a partial drop fails the gate, says reached calibration: 4/5 and 1 of 5 eligible rows did not reach the fit, and still returns a fitted T; full coverage gates on ECE only and carries the in-sample label; the decision report prints 1 of 3 rows with an expected decision had no audit. Two of them use a fixture where ECE passes, so only coverage decides the gate: partial coverage fails with gate ECE<0.10: FAIL, full coverage passes. Reverting the coverage check (gate_ok = ece_ok) or always returning 1 each makes one of these fail.

Proof

application.tests.librarian.evaluate_harness_test 19 tests OK
application/tests/librarian (discover) 273 tests OK, 2 skipped
full suite merged with current main 1106 tests OK, 6 skipped
scripts/evaluate_librarian.py on the golden set: explicit 5/5 PASS, exit 0 (unchanged)
strict mypy on the script: 7 pre-existing notes on main, 7 on this branch, none new
black: clean; merge with main and with #1140: no conflicts

Reproduction from #1166 against this branch: 40 rows selected, 24 empty shortlists, output now reached calibration: 16/40, then 24 of 40 eligible rows did not reach the fit ... FAILED (gate denominator incomplete), exit 1. Before: calibration (C.3, 16 rows) ... PASS, exit 0.

Update after review (2026-11-05)

  • The C.3 line prints PASS only when the whole gate passes. Before, a run that failed on coverage still printed gate ECE<0.10: PASS and then a FAILED line. The FAILED line now also says whether ECE alone met the bar.
  • report_calibration's docstring and the runbook cover the new failure. The runbook says widening the selection will not fix it; find the rows with no audit or an empty shortlist.
  • The new tests sat below the unittest.main() guard, so running the file directly skipped them. Moved above it.

…gate (OWASP#1166)

calibration_set() skipped rows with no audit or an empty reranked shortlist,
and report_calibration() printed the survivors as if they were the selection,
so a hollowed-out calibration set could print PASS and exit 0. Same class as
the explicit-gate fix in OWASP#1140.

- calibration_eligible(): positive + hard_negative rows in the selection
- report_calibration(): prints "reached calibration: used/eligible", labels
the ECE as in-sample, fails the gate when any eligible row was dropped and
says how many; T is still returned so C.4 can report
- report_decision_accuracy(): prints how many expected-decision rows had no
audit instead of silently grading fewer
- tests for all three

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Calibration coverage includes eligible positive and hard-negative records. Missing audits or empty reranked results count against coverage and are reported.
    • Calibration fails when coverage is incomplete or calibration is degenerate; with full coverage, the gate depends on the expected calibration error threshold.
    • Decision reports distinguish expected-decision records missing audits from selections with no gradable records and report missing-audit counts.
  • Documentation

    • Updated live-evaluation guidance and troubleshooting for incomplete calibration coverage.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for calibration eligibility, incomplete and complete coverage, degenerate cases, and decision-report handling.

Walkthrough

The C.3 gate now compares fitted calibration rows with all eligible positive and hard-negative rows. The C.4 report identifies expected-decision rows without audits. Tests cover calibration coverage, degenerate fits, and missing decision audits.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the C.3 calibration gate now counts rows that never reached the fit against the ECE gate. It matches the raw summary, which says incomplete coverage now fails the gate, and the PR objectives, which describe the same change. The title does not mention the C.4 decision report change, but that is secondary and the title does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Only #1166 is directly linked and open, so its coding requirements apply. (1) Eligible rows: calibration_eligible() counts positive and hard_negative rows of the selection. Verified in the whole-PR diff against merge base 06f2c56. (2) Coverage reporting: report_calibration() prints reached calibration: used/eligible and a line naming how many eligible rows did not reach the fit. (3) Strict gate: coverage_ok = used == eligible, and gate_ok = ece_ok and coverage_ok, so incomplete coverage cannot print PASS. (4) In-sample label: the ECE line now says (calibrated, in-sample). (5) Scaler retained: T is still returned, so C.4 can use it. (6) C.4: report_decision_accuracy() counts rows with an expected decision that had no audit and prints the gap. It stays informational and returns 0. (7) Tests: CalibrationCoverageTest covers eligible counting, partial drop (reached calibration: 4/5), full coverage with the in-sample label, ECE-pass with partial coverage (FAIL), degenerate set, and the missing-audit decision line. The issue's optional items are not implemented: leave-one-out ECE and a --calibration-coverage-floor option. The issue marks both as optional or alternative, so their absence does not fail the requirements. The C.4 line prints only when a gap exists, not as an always-present graded/selected count. The gap wording conveys the same information. The test named test_skips_rows_with_no_audit_and_empty_shortlists is not in the test file diff. The author reports the full suite passing (268 tests OK), which does not indicate a conflicting test. I did not verify that test name directly.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against merge base 06f2c56 changes three areas. (a) scripts/evaluate_librarian.py: calibration_eligible(), the C.3 coverage reporting and gate in report_calibration(), and the C.4 missing-audit reporting in report_decision_accuracy(). All of these implement #1166. The explicit gate and the fewer-than-two-classes guard are unchanged, as the PR states. (b) application/tests/librarian/evaluate_harness_test.py: updates the existing decision-report test for the new missing-audit wording and adds CalibrationCoverageTest. These tests verify the #1166 behavior. (c) Runbook documentation for the new C.3 failure condition and troubleshooting. Documentation for a new gate condition supports the change. No unrelated source or test change appears in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 60.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Assert the ECE gate against an independent expected result.

The assertion derives status from the report text produced by the same gate logic. A consistent ECE or gate error can therefore pass. Assert the expected threshold outcome from the fixture logits and fitted scaler instead.

Review follow-ups on OWASP#1167:

- report_calibration(): print "reached calibration: used/eligible" and the
dropped-row count before the degenerate-set return, so a selection where most
rows never reached the fit says so instead of only "need both outcomes".
- report_decision_accuracy(): print the missing-audit count before the
nothing-graded return, so "no rows with an expected decision" is never the
only line when every selected row simply lacked an audit.
- test: the full-coverage case now computes the expected gate outcome from the
fixture logits and a refitted T instead of reading it back from the report.
- tests for both early-return paths.

The tests never reached a passing ECE, so reverting the coverage check left
them green. Add a fixture where ECE passes and only coverage decides the gate.
The C.3 line now prints FAIL when coverage fails the gate, and the runbook and
docstring cover the new failure. Move the new tests above the unittest.main
guard so direct runs include them.

Limit the coverage claim to eligible rows.

C.3 fits only positive and hard-negative rows. The full selection can also contain explicit, update, and ambiguous rows. Say “every eligible positive and hard-negative row in the selection” here and in scripts/evaluate_librarian.py at Line 352.

Librarian C.3 ECE gate and C.4 report silently drop rows with no audit or an empty shortlist, so the gate denominator shrinks without a trace.
