- implement the runtime's adapter contract (execute + maintenance_execution_fingerprint) and dispatch per operator through an introspectable registry, exported from `adapters` so a policy opts in via `Memory(adapter=DocetlAdapter(...))` , the default backend stays LOTUS - build the DSLRunner lazily and keep the fingerprint backend-distinct, so constructing an adapter loads no engine machinery and a checkpoint can never be restored under the other engine - duplicate the deterministic source/window operators from adapters/lotus/ rather than sharing them, so the two adapters can change independently, and cover the fingerprint invariant with a contract test Placeholder: no operator reaches DocETL yet . The frame↔records bridge to DocETL's operation classes is next.
Lowers our row-local `sem_filter` onto DocETL's `filter` operation:
- `records.py` carries the frame index through DocETL's `list[dict]` and rebuilds
the frame on return.
- `prompt.py` renders `{column}` as the Jinja DocETL expects, with the context
root as an argument.
- `sem_filter.py` builds the config, lets DocETL validate and run it, and strips
the decision key.
Model and endpoint come from the environment. Verified on the real provider: a policy's view matches LOTUS frame
for frame.
- implement `sem_map` on DocETL's 1:1 `map` and refuse a run in which the engine
returns fewer records than rows were given, so a rejected answer cannot
silently lose a memory
- implement `sem_flat_map` by asking `map` for a `list[{...}]` column and
expanding it here, keeping the input row's index on every emitted row;
counting records rather than emitted rows tells an empty answer from a
dropped one
- name the injected keys for the model (`keep_row`, `output_rows`, `__index__`)
and refuse a frame that already uses one, because the first two appear in the
tool schema and cannot vary per run
- build each column's schema type and description in `columns.py`, where the
"every declared column is text" limitation would later be lifted
- `execute_agg` rejects `SemanticAggregateSpec` up front instead of inside the row loop, so an empty frame cannot return a zero-row result that looks complete - `aggregate_groups_with_keys` → `_groups_for_aggregate`, which refuses a frame carrying `_agent_memory_group_id` rather than grouping it as one whole row - `_aggregate_groups_by_keys` → `_groups_by_keys`: only the shape in use, since `output_keys` / `drop_columns` were always the group keys and empty - `execute_min` and `execute_agg` both group through it; `aggregates` is annotated so the checker sees the per-spec branches
- `sem_join.py`: candidate pairs, one verdict per pair through `filter`, optional
ranking through `map`
- `on`: absent (cartesian), exact keys, or predicates (not mixed)
- `how`: `inner` (default), `left`, `right`, `outer`
- `k`: positive int, per left row, applied after the verdicts
- `id_columns`: two distinct names, planner-internal
- `instruction`: required; `{col}`, `{col:left}`, `{col:right}` pick compared columns
- no `listwise` / `scored`: ranking is always listwise, `sem_join_topk_method`
accepts only `listwise`
- `prompt.py`: builds the verdict question from resolved columns (`join_slot`,
`build_join_prompt`, `build_topk_prompt`, `lower_join_instruction`,
`join_comparison_columns`)
- `context.py` + `adapter.py`: `sem_join_topk_method` is validated config, and folded
into the fingerprint; the unused `pair_embedding_provider` field is dropped
- tests: `test_docetl_join.py` 28 cases, `test_adapter_parity.py` one case,
`test_docetl_operator_real_e2e.py` one gated case, and `adapter_support.py` now maps
request markers to answers
op_config is the single spec frame the five build_*_config fill in; run_operation is the single place a DocETL operation is constructed and executed. A spec carries only semantics: skip_on_error and litellm_completion_kwargs are uniform across operators, so with_op_defaults applies them once at that boundary. Config fields are grouped by the DocETL channel each goes through: runner_config, with_op_defaults, run_operation, or local. Docstrings cut to what the signature does not say. No behavior change.

Include the left row in the top-k ranking context
When a left row has more than k verified matches, the ranking records contain only the right-side candidates and a positional ID. build_topk_prompt also replaces the instruction's placeholders with column names rather than the left row's values. Consequently, the ranking model never sees the anchor it must rank against: two different left rows with the same candidate set receive identical ranking prompts even if their best matches differ. Include the compared left-side values in each ranking record and render them in the ranking prompt.

Fingerprint the completion parameters used by semantic operations
When an executor is restored with different litellm_completion_kwargs, such as a changed temperature or token limit, this fingerprint remains unchanged even though with_op_defaults forwards those settings to every semantic operation. PolicyExecutor.restore uses this fingerprint to reject incompatible snapshots, so it instead accepts the old semantic-output cache and maintained state and mixes results from the previous configuration with newly computed results. Include a deterministic serialization of the completion parameters in the fingerprint.

Use dictionary subscripts when rendering column placeholders
For valid input columns named items, keys, values, or get, this translation produces expressions such as {{ input.items }}. Jinja's dot lookup resolves object attributes before dictionary entries, so these expressions render a dictionary method rather than the row's column value. This silently sends incorrect context to sem_filter, sem_map, and sem_flat_map, making their results independent of the intended input data. Emit bracket lookup expressions such as {{ input['items'] }} so column names cannot collide with dictionary attributes.

Preserve nullable integer values when rebuilding semantic results
When an input contains a nullable integer column with values above the exact-integer range of float64, rebuilding it with inferred dtypes corrupts unchanged input values. For example, an Int64 column containing 9007199254740993 and pd.NA becomes records containing that integer and None; this constructor then infers float64 and rounds the integer to 9007199254740992. Both sem_filter and sem_map use this conversion, so even a filter that keeps every row can alter IDs and break downstream joins. Preserve the source columns' dtypes or reconstruct unchanged columns from the source instead of inferring them from records.

Bind qualified filter placeholders to existing joined columns
When sem_filter consumes a joined relation, qualified placeholders name columns already present in that single input frame; they do not necessarily request another row. This unconditional rejection therefore prevents filtering those columns. The existing Zep policies in src/agent_memory/memories/zep/policy.py and policy_extended.py use {fact:later_added} and {fact:earlier_added} in their contradiction filters, and the LOTUS backend explicitly supports this through bind_qualified_filter_columns. Resolve qualified filter placeholders against the corresponding base:qualifier input column rather than rejecting them.

Reject unsupported algebraic aggregate specs before the empty-input shortcut.
LotusAdapter.execute sends algebraic agg queries to execute_algebraic_aggregate. These queries use CountAggregateSpec, SumAggregateSpec, or AvgAggregateSpec. DocetlAdapter sends every agg query to this function instead, and supported_ops() lists agg. A policy that works on LOTUS therefore behaves differently on DocETL:
- A global algebraic
agg(input is notgroup_by) raisesValueErrorat Line 505. - A grouped algebraic
aggwith an empty source returns an empty frame at Line 514, so the query appears to succeed. - The same grouped query with rows raises
TypeErrorat Line 548.
Whether the query fails depends on whether the input has rows. Neither error is the NotImplementedError that this adapter uses elsewhere for unsupported shapes. The parity case for agg uses only ArrayAggregateSpec, so tests do not cover this path. Validate the spec types before the empty check, and raise NotImplementedError.

The k ranking call never receives the left row, so it cannot rank relative to it.
Each ranking record holds only GROUP_POSITION_COLUMN and candidates. candidates contains only right-side text from _pair_text(right, ...). The left row's values are never put into the prompt record. left is used on this path only to compute join_comparison_columns.
build_topk_prompt takes only instruction, k and ids_column. It lowers the instruction through lower_join_instruction. tests/test_docetl_join.py shows the verdict prompt lowering {note:left} and {note:right} to the bare column name note. The ranking prompt is built from the same lowering, so the model most likely sees a condition such as "the subjects match: note and note" with no left value. The model then picks the top k right rows with no anchor. The result is arbitrary or unrelated to the left row. The k cap is silently wrong whenever a left row has more than k verified matches.
Add the left row's text to each ranking record. Reference it in _TOPK_TEMPLATE, for example as {{ input.anchor }}. Update test_the_ranking_prompt_leaves_candidates_to_the_renderer to match.

Hi Jacky, thanks for your PR.
My review based on your commit 0dd19f2.
The PR provides a useful starting point, but correctness issues and missing operators need to be addressed before merging. Please focus on basic execution first; leave blocking optimization, BARGAIN, and MOAR for later.
1. Fix the Confirmed Review Findings
The following Codex-bot and CodeRabbit-bot findings (I requested them to review previously in the pr, plz check) are valid. Please fix them and add regression tests.
| Issue | Required change |
|---|---|
| Top-k ranking does not receive the left row | Include the left row so the model knows what it is ranking candidates against. [Codex](#17 (comment)) / [CodeRabbit](#17 (comment)) |
| Changed model parameters do not invalidate restored state | Include completion parameters, such as temperature and token limits, in the execution fingerprint. [Comment](#17 (comment)) |
Jinja interprets columns such as items and keys as dictionary methods |
Use dictionary subscript access when rendering fields. [Comment](#17 (comment)) |
| DataFrame reconstruction can corrupt large integer IDs | Preserve original field types rather than converting integers through floating-point values. [Comment](#17 (comment)) |
Qualified references such as {fact:later_added} are rejected |
Resolve them to the corresponding columns already present in the joined table. [Comment](#17 (comment)) |
| Unsupported aggregates succeed on empty inputs but fail on nonempty inputs | Check support consistently before the empty-input shortcut. [Comment](#17 (comment)) |
Two additional issues also need attention:
- Invalid model responses must not silently become
Falseor dropped rows. - Columns explicitly selected through
input_colsmust actually reach the model, even when the instruction does not contain placeholders for every column.
2. Connect sem_join to Native DocETL Equijoin
Keep our existing API and maintenance rules. Replace the matching implementation underneath them.
The main changes belong in sem_join.py, context.py, and prompt.py. The context needs a two-input execution path for EquijoinOperation.execute(left_records, right_records).
| Our API | What DocETL provides | What the adapter must preserve |
|---|---|---|
sem_join(..., how="inner") |
Native equijoin returns matching pairs | Restore our output columns and original row data |
how="left", "right", or "outer" |
No equivalent outer-join mode | Use the existing assembly code to add unmatched rows |
on=... |
No drop-in equivalent for our complete contract | Determine allowed pairs using the existing logic; do not send forbidden pairs to the model |
k=... |
limits restricts counts but does not rank matches |
Keep the ranking step, include the left row, and select its best matches |
For example, if the left input contains A and B, the right input contains X and Y, and DocETL matches only A–X, an inner join returns A–X. An outer join additionally returns B–null and null–Y. Adding these unmatched rows requires ordinary code, not another model call.
Carry internal row IDs through execution and reconstruct results from the original inputs. Preserve duplicate rows and field types. Model or parsing failures must raise errors rather than count as “no match.”
Disable Automatic and Embedding Blocking for Now
Do not add fixed-threshold configuration in this revision. Also leave cascade disabled. Keep on, because it is part of the query, not an optional optimization.
Omitting blocking parameters does not disable blocking: DocETL may automatically learn a threshold during execution. For joins without on, explicitly use:
blocking_conditions: ["True"]
blocking_threshold: null
# Do not set limit_comparisons, limits, or cascade. For joins with on, allow only pairs satisfying that condition.
Add a test with more than 100 candidate pairs to verify that automatic threshold learning is never invoked. When fixed-threshold support is added later, note that DocETL 0.3.0 unions code-based and embedding-based candidates; it does not intersect them. Simply combining the two could bypass on.
3. Complete Coverage and Validation
sem_groupby, sem_agg, sem_topk, and some internal incremental-aggregation operators are still missing. Consequently, the existing Claude memory pipeline cannot run end to end.
Evaluate DocETL’s resolve, reduce, and rank, etc. for grouping, aggregation, and ranking, respectively really really carefully. Take your time to think about a way.
Match our existing behavior rather than assuming similarly named operators are interchangeable. Reuse existing deterministic implementations where practical.
The two failing CI jobs are Python 3.12 and 3.13, each with 42 failing tests, concentrated in the existing DeepSeek Responses tests. Investigate compatibility changes introduced by the OpenAI/LiteLLM upgrades. Also fix cost accounting in context.py; directly calling an operation does not automatically accumulate its returned cost in the runner.
Acceptance criteria: existing tests pass; supported memory pipelines can process successive additions, restore state, and retrieve results; tests exercise the real planner/runtime, not just individual operations.
Add blocking optimization, BARGAIN, and MOAR separately afterward. First establish correct backend execution, then measure optimization benefits.
