var/alist/datum/foo will result in an undefined type: /alist/datum error, while var/list/datum/foo will correctly be interpreted as a list containing /datums.

I think it would be useful to design a syntax for specifying both the key and value types of the /alist. It would have been useful for /list too, but alist deserves it even more.
