ALTER TABLE, OPTIMIZE TABLE, and REPAIR TABLE can reset a table's AUTO_INCREMENT counter when rebuilding it. For example, if IDs 1, 2, and 3 were inserted and 3 was deleted, rebuilding the table can cause the next insert to reuse 3 instead of assigning 4. Empty tables can also lose a configured starting value such as AUTO_INCREMENT = 1000.

This change preserves the counter during table rebuilds, including the upgrade migration introduced in #542. It handles regular and temporary tables and keeps explicit AUTO_INCREMENT changes working.

Fixes #544

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Table rebuilds now preserve AUTO_INCREMENT values, including after rows are deleted or a rebuild fails.
    • Explicit next-ID settings and separate sequences for temporary and persistent tables are retained.
    • AUTO_INCREMENT values remain intact across table changes, optimization, and repair operations.
    • Configuration changes that normalize zero dates no longer reset AUTO_INCREMENT values.

Transfer the original sequence to the replacement table before dropping the old table, keeping the higher counter from copied rows. Keep temporary and persistent sequences separate.

Cover table rebuilds, empty and seeded tables, large IDs, explicit counter changes, rollback, and temporal-default upgrade migrations.

📝 Walkthrough

Table reconstruction now preserves the original table’s AUTO_INCREMENT sequence when the applicable SQLite schema has a sqlite_sequence table. Tests cover rebuild operations and configuration normalization.

Changes: AUTO_INCREMENT Preservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restore the sequence during reconstruction
packages/mysql-on-sqlite/src/sqlite/class-wp-mysql-on-sqlite.php, packages/mysql-on-sqlite/tests/WP_MySQL_On_SQLite_Translation_Tests.php
Reconstruction checks the applicable main or temp schema for sqlite_sequence. If it exists, reconstruction raises the replacement table’s sequence to at least the original table’s value. Translation expectations include the schema lookup.
Cover rebuild and configuration scenarios

Tests cover sequence preservation across rebuild operations, explicit sequence options, table-name variations, temporary and persistent tables, tables without auto-increment columns, failed rebuilds, and temporal-default normalization.

Explanation

Issue #544 requires ALTER TABLE and OPTIMIZE TABLE rebuilds to preserve AUTO_INCREMENT counters, including deleted-ID gaps and configured starting values. The shared recreate_table_from_information_schema() path preserves the original sqlite_sequence value and keeps a higher value reached by copied rows. The change covers persistent and temporary tables, explicit counter options, and failed rebuilds. Tests cover add-column, modify-column, OPTIMIZE, and the related temporal-default upgrade migration from #542. The current PR description also includes REPAIR TABLE, and the tests cover that operation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #544 and the current PR scope. The implementation supports the same counter-preservation behavior for REPAIR TABLE. The added regression tests and translation expectation updates directly validate the implementation. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated files appear in the supplied change summary.

empty-table rebuilds preserve the next AUTOINCREMENT value.
