Report zero-row statements as successful in Connection::safeQuery() - #647
Conversation
safeQuery() ended with `return $result ?: null;`, so a statement that succeeded without changing rows (every CREATE TABLE, DROP TABLE, an UPDATE or DELETE matching nothing) returned null, the failure value. Callers that test the result treated those statements as failed: module install SQL, profile field ALTER TABLE, Xmf\Database\Tables. It now returns true in that case. Affected-row counts above zero and SELECT results are returned unchanged, and null still means failure. - XoopsDatabaseManager::deleteTables() listed a table as dropped when its DROP failed; the old null result hid the inverted condition - XoopsMySQLDatabase::getAffectedRows() no longer calls rowCount() on a non-Result value - Tests run the statements against in-memory SQLite
Reviewer's GuideChanges the database query contract so successful statements affecting zero rows return true instead of null, while preserving counts and result objects; dependent legacy helpers are corrected and comprehensive SQLite-backed regression tests are added. **Fake masks DDL failure**
When the real connection regresses to returning null for successful zero-row DDL, when `Connection::safeQuery()` still returns `null` for successful zero-row DDL, `testExecuteQueueAcceptsDdlThatAffectsNoRows()` passes because `SchemaFakeConnection::query()` supplies `true` for that case without using the real connection.
Exercise `Tables::executeQueue()` with a real `Connection` for this regression, or keep this test scoped to the fake-query contract and avoid using it as proof of the integration behavior.

Blocking findings: tests/unit/xoopsLib/Xmf/Database/TablesSchemaTest.php:192
The TablesSchemaTest fake returns true for zero-row statements itself, so it cannot catch a regression in Connection::safeQuery(). Run a CREATE TABLE through executeQueue() on an in-memory SQLite Connection instead, and use camelCase names for the new test methods.

Connection::safeQuery()(andquery(), which calls it) ended withreturn $result ?: null;. For non-SELECT statements$resultis the affected-row count, so a statement that succeeded without changing rows returnednull, the value that signals failure. That covers everyCREATE TABLEandDROP TABLE, and anyUPDATE/DELETEthat matches nothing.Callers that check the result therefore treated successful statements as failed, for example:
modules/system/class/module.php(if (!$result) { error; break; }after eachCREATE TABLE)ALTER TABLEinmodules/profile/class/field.phpXmf\Database\Tables::executeQueue(), which reported a successfulCREATE TABLEas failed (found while porting XMF 1.3.2 in Update bundled XMF to 1.3.2 #645)Change
safeQuery()returnstruewhen a statement succeeds without changing rows. Affected-row counts above zero and SELECTResultobjects are returned unchanged;nullstill means the statement failed or was refused on a non-safe connection.XoopsDatabaseManager::deleteTables()listed a table as dropped when itsDROPfailed. The oldnullresult hid the inverted condition; it now lists the tables that were dropped, as documented. (No callers in core.)XoopsMySQLDatabase::getAffectedRows()calledrowCount()on whateverquery()returned, which was fatal after any write. It now returns the row count, or 0 when no rows changed.Compatibility
None of the ~70
query()call sites in core compares the result withnull/0or uses it as a number; they test truthiness, which this makes correct for zero-row statements.Tests
ConnectionSafeQueryTestruns CREATE/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE/SELECT, a failing statement, and the safe/force handling against in-memory SQLite.XoopsMySQLDatabaseTest::test_getAffectedRowsFollowsConnectionQueryandXoopsDatabaseManagerTest::test_deleteTablesReturnsOnlyDroppedTablescover the two follow-up fixes.TablesSchemaTest::testExecuteQueueAcceptsDdlThatAffectsNoRows, marked incomplete in Update bundled XMF to 1.3.2 #645, now passes.Not changed:
Connection::executeStatement()still returns0both on failure and when no rows changed. Its callers use it for row counts rather than success checks, so it is left as is.Summary by Sourcery
Treat successful statements that affect no rows as successful throughout the database API.
