馃毄 Problem Description
When using Gotify as a central notification hub for homelab monitoring, releases, backups, downloads, uptime checks and other automated alerts, the current message list becomes difficult to manage once a large number of notifications accumulate.
Today, notifications are displayed in a compact list without clear visual distinction between read and unread items, and there are limited options to organize or prioritize messages from the main view.
As a user, I'm often frustrated when I need to find a specific alert or determine which notifications I have already reviewed.
馃挕 Proposed Solution
Improve the main notification view with a more modern and information-rich layout.
Suggested features:
- Optional card-based view for notifications.
- Display message timestamp directly on each notification card.
- Ability to sort notifications by:
- Date (newest first / oldest first)
- Priority
- Application
- Visual distinction between read and unread notifications:
- Unread messages displayed in bold.
- Optional unread indicator badge or colored marker.
- Read messages displayed normally.
- Preserve the existing compact list view as an option for users who prefer it.
This would significantly improve usability for users who rely on Gotify as a daily monitoring dashboard.
馃攧 Alternatives Considered
Currently users can manually scroll through notifications and use application filtering, but this becomes difficult when managing large notification volumes.
External dashboards can also be used, but they do not solve the usability issue inside the Gotify application itself.
馃摳 Mockups / Screenshots (optional)
A card-based layout similar to modern notification centers would work well.
Each card could display:
- Priority indicator
- Application name
- Timestamp
- Message preview
- Read/Unread status
馃幆 Use Case
This feature would benefit users running Gotify as a central notification platform for:
- Homelabs
- Server monitoring
- Docker container updates
- GitHub/NewReleases notifications
- Backup monitoring
- Download automation
- Infrastructure alerts
For users receiving dozens or hundreds of notifications per week, being able to quickly identify unread messages and sort notifications by date or priority would greatly improve the overall user experience.
鉁旓笍 Checklist
鈩癸笍 Additional Context
My primary request is better notification management from the main screen.
The most valuable improvements would be:
- Read/Unread status.
- Timestamp visibility.
- Sorting by date and priority.
- Optional card-based notification layout.
These features would make Gotify much more effective as a notification center for advanced users and homelab environments.
Thanks!!!!!!
