Summary

Addresses the API error paths reported in #335. With serve --no-convert and an unreadable cache, /api/search and /api/projects currently return HTTP 500 with a raw DatabaseError(...) representation, even though /api/ping already diagnoses the unreadable cache.

  • Route corruption raised by the search readiness check through the existing unavailable-index diagnostic and HTTP 400 path.
  • Report an unreadable projects cache as a readable HTTP 400 error, without substituting an empty successful result.
  • Keep unrelated SQLite errors unchanged. No cache deletion, retry, repair, or extra readiness query is added to a healthy search.

This is scoped to the two backend error responses; it does not change the frontend restart hint discussed in #335.

Validation

  • New real-loopback HTTP regression cases for both endpoints failed on the base (500 instead of 400), then passed with the fix.
  • python -m pytest --noconftest -o addopts= test/test_api.py -q: 21 passed, including the existing search no-full-scan test and a new check that unrelated database errors still propagate. Temporary files and HOME were isolated; pytest reported four warnings for optional plugins not installed.
  • Locked Ruff 0.14.7 check and format-check: passed on both changed files.
  • Additional synthetic-only acceptance: install, CLI help, file/directory/session-id conversion, HTML in both themes, Markdown/JSON/stdout, date filtering, token statistics, cache/search API, append/watch detection; actual Chromium page/filter/search checks in both themes passed.

Full just ci, upstream shared fixtures, TUI/provider discovery, large real-archive performance and network-dependent timeline behavior were not run. Local acceptance used only newly constructed synthetic records, an isolated HOME/cache and a loopback server; it did not access user archives or execute transcript commands.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Search and project requests now return a clear, sanitized error when the cache database is unreadable.
    • Search requests handle an unreadable index through the existing unavailable-index error response.
    • Other database errors continue to follow their existing error handling rather than being reported as cache corruption.

Walkthrough

The projects and search API paths now handle recognized corrupt-cache errors. Route handlers convert recognized corruption errors to an unreadable-cache error. Tests verify sanitized HTTP 400 responses and confirm that other database errors still propagate.

Changes: Corrupt Cache API Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
API handling and validation
claude_code_log/api.py, test/test_api.py
SearchApi.projects converts recognized corruption errors to an unreadable-cache ValueError and re-raises other database errors. SearchApi.search treats recognized corruption errors from index_ready as an unavailable index. Route handlers convert recognized corruption errors to an unreadable-cache ValueError. Tests check sanitized HTTP 400 responses and verify that a missing projects table still raises sqlite3.OperationalError.

Explanation

The title "fix: report unreadable caches from search API routes" matches the main change. The PR routes cache corruption from search readiness and the projects endpoint to readable HTTP 400 errors, and the objectives state this aim. The title names search routes only, while the projects endpoint is also changed. That gap is minor, so the title is still a pass. The title is specific, concise, and follows a conventional commit prefix.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 25.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Thanks for picking this up! The junk-file case is handled well, and keeping unrelated SQLite errors propagating is the right call. test/test_api.py passes locally, and ruff and pyright are clean on both changed files.

Requested change: a damaged page still returns a 500

#335 also describes a cache with a garbled page (database disk image is malformed). Here the corruption isn't caught in index_ready(). That check reads only sqlite_master and the meta row, which usually survive a single damaged page, so the request goes on and fails later. I built a real indexed cache and overwrote single pages:

Damaged page /api/search /api/projects
projects root DatabaseError → 500 with repr 400 "cache database is unreadable" ✓
message_fts_data root DatabaseError → 500 with repr 200 ✓

The error can come from indexed_fields(), _resolve_project_id() or search() itself. The new test doesn't catch this because it only uses a file of junk bytes.

Suggestion: handle corruption once for all routes rather than at each call site. For example, wrap the handlers in routes():

def _clean_corruption(handler):
    def wrapped(params):
        try:
            return handler(params)
        except sqlite3.DatabaseError as exc:
            if not is_corrupt_database_error(exc):
                raise
            raise ValueError(f"cache database is unreadable ({exc})") from exc
    return wrapped

This covers search, projects and any future route, and other SQLite errors still propagate. The try/except in projects could then go. The one in search could go too, unless you want to keep the "search index is not available (…)" wording. Please add a garbled-page test as well: build an index, overwrite the message_fts_data root page, then query /api/search.

Comments

  • Status code: 400 is a slight stretch for a problem on the server's side (503 would fit better). But it matches the existing "index not available" path, since the server only maps ValueError to 400, so it's fine as it is.
  • Message shape: the search error reads "search index is not available (cache database is unreadable (file is not a database))". The nested brackets are a bit clumsy but readable.
  • .fetchall() in projects: good catch. Rows are read lazily and could otherwise fail outside the try.
  • Restart hint: as you noted, the page still says "Restart the server to build it", which is wrong for an unreadable cache under --no-convert. That's fine as a follow-up.
  • Tests: test_projects_does_not_hide_other_database_errors is a nice addition.

Recognize the damaged FTS constructor error as cache corruption.

When the message_fts_data page is damaged, the message_fts search can raise DatabaseError("vtable constructor failed: message_fts"). is_corrupt_database_error does not recognize this message, so the route returns HTTP 500 instead of the unreadable-cache HTTP 400 response.
