A new recent.html, next to the index, lists recently active sessions across every project, newest update first. The user guide is docs/recent-sessions.md; the as-built reference is dev-docs/application_model.md § 2.18.

What a row shows

  • Whose move it is: asked you (a question, an unanswered AskUserQuestion, or a plan waiting for approval), error, finished, background (finished, but background work is running or a wake-up is due) or mid-turn.
  • A strip of the last 4 hours and the next one: turn bars, tool ticks, and markers whose tooltips show the start of the turn's prompt and of how it ended. Background commands, agents and monitors are packed lanes (at most three, then "+N more"). Turns Claude starts by itself, after background work reports or a wake-up fires, get a bell or alarm marker. A pending wake-up is drawn ahead of now. The prompt cache countdown is drawn as a band.
  • An expanded row: the last prompt and message rendered as Markdown, plus a Background list.

How it works

  • The page holds no data. It reloads a sibling recent-data.js every 15 s, the one channel a file:// page has, and redraws rows in place. watch keeps the data file current.
  • Background work is paired from the transcript by claude_code_log/background_work.py. Transcripts can't show liveness: work with no end recorded counts as running for an hour after the session's last entry, then shows as no end recorded. The page applies this against its own clock.
  • Markdown is rendered in Python by the session pages' escaping pipeline. The page writes markup through exactly one helper, fed only from those rendered fields, and a test pins that.

Checked

  • just ci passes.
  • Browser tests cover rows, refresh in place, filters, Markdown and script safety, the chevron, lanes and overflow, waiting and lost states, and the phone layout.
  • The parser was run read-only over a real 157-session archive. That caught false launches matched in command output, and notifications that were only queued; both are fixed with tests.

A new recent.html next to the index lists recently active sessions
across every project, newest update first. This commit has the data
side and the wiring; the page template, its CSS/JS and the browser
tests follow.

- recent.py builds the payload from the cache (one cross-project query,
then each recent session's entries): turns, tool-call times, the last
prompt and message, and whose move it is (asked / error / done / busy).
  Transcript states only, not liveness.
- The hierarchy run writes recent.html and recent-data.js after the
index; a failure there never fails the run.
- watch rewrites recent-data.js after each single-project tick in the
default layout, so the self-refreshing page stays current.
- The index links to the page in both themes (a deliberate markup change
to the index in each theme; snapshots to be updated with the page).

recent.html lists recently active sessions across every project, newest
update first: a status block (time since the update and whose move it
is), the title with project/worktree/branch, a strip of the last six
hours with each turn's prompt, tool calls and how it ended, the prompt
cache countdown, and a row that opens in place on the last prompt and
the full last message. The numbers in the header filter the list; "by
project" groups it. System fonts and the minimal theme's tokens, one
look in both themes.

The page holds no data. It loads recent-data.js with a plain script tag
and re-adds it every 15 s (the one channel a file:// page has), redrawing
rows in place so open rows, filters and scroll survive. That keeps the
page byte-identical from run to run (only the data file carries the time
it was written, for the staleness notice) and keeps transcript text out
of the HTML entirely; the rows are built with textContent only.

- The cross-project session query is classified in the connection
census as a mode=ro reader, and builds its URI with as_uri().
- Index snapshots: one link added in each theme, and the minimal link's
icon rule in the minimal pages' stylesheet; purely additive.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01J4FqCJpueUcFNo35UXhxvS
…e layout

Rows:
- An open row renders the last prompt and message as Markdown, rendered
in recent.py by the session pages' escaping pipeline. The page puts
  that HTML in through one helper and nowhere else (pinned by a test);
tool lines and errors stay plain text. The data carries one form or
  the other, never both.
- A chevron left of the status block opens the row (pointer only; the
  block stays the keyboard control).
- Markers' tooltips show the start of the turn's prompt and of how it
ended. The strip shows 4 h back instead of 6.
- An unanswered AskUserQuestion or ExitPlanMode is "asked you": its
questions and options, or the plan, are the last message.

Background work (new background_work.py):
- Background commands, async agents and monitors are paired with their
ends: notifications in user entries, queued_command attachments and
queue-operations, TaskStop/KillShell, monitor expiry. Launch ids come
from toolUseResult or the harness's own launch message only (a
foreground command's output can look like one).
- Pending wake-ups come from ScheduleWakeup's scheduledFor and leave at
  the scheduled_task_fire entry.
- A notification delivered while idle, or a wake-up firing, starts a
turn of its own (bell / alarm marker), so one bar no longer spans an
  idle gap.
- The page draws work as packed lanes under the turns (at most three,
the rest folded into "+N more"), pending wake-ups ahead of now, and a
Background list in the open row. A finished session with work running
or a wake-up due is "background" and leaves "your move". Work with no
end recorded counts as running for an hour after the last entry, then
shows as "no end recorded"; the page applies this against its clock.

Phone: Updated shares the last filter row, the list loses its box, and
an open row puts Transcript beside the copy button with its counts on
one line.

Also: two minimal-theme tests located the search link by a class the
index's new Recent sessions link shares; they now select it by href.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review feedback: watch rewrote recent-data.js after every tick by
re-reading every listed session's entries from the cache, which is
nearly all of a build's cost (0.53s for 9 sessions / 22k entries on a
real archive, and up to 60 sessions are listed).

A session's summary (read_session: every turn, its background work,
the rendered last prompt and message) is a function of its entries
alone, so it is now a SessionSummary, and the clock (the turn horizon,
which background items and wake-ups are shown) is applied separately by
SessionSummary.at on every build. watch owns one RecentMemo for its
life, keyed on each session row's (last_timestamp, message_count): a
tick re-reads only the sessions whose row moved, a kept summary never
serves a stale horizon, and sessions that leave the list are dropped.
The same tick now takes 6ms.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Playwright's clock belongs to the browser context, and `page` lives in a
persistent context shared by every browser test on an xdist worker. Two
recent-sessions tests installed a clock there, and it stayed installed
for the tests that followed: test_escape_keeps_the_current_match_in_place
(search) then failed whenever xdist put it after one of them on the same
worker (reproduced deterministically with -n0 by running the two in
order; main, without clock tests, never failed).

A new `isolated_page` fixture gives a page in a fresh context closed with
the test; the two tests use it, and test_browser_isolation.py checks
statically that every test touching the clock asks for it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review feedback: the memo was keyed on the session row's
(last_timestamp, message_count), which skip attachment entries; a
background-work notification delivered mid-turn arrives as an
attachment, so when it was the newest entry the memo kept showing that
work running.

The session-rows query now also returns the count and highest row id of
the session's cached entries (the exact rows load_session_entries
reads; index-only via idx_messages_project_session_ts), and the memo
keys on those: any insert moves the id. A warm tick is about 10ms.

Claude Code writes a compaction's summary as a user entry, and also
compacts sessions while they sit idle ("Compacted while idle, before the
prompt cache expired"). The summary was read as a prompt you typed, so
an idly compacted session ended on a turn with no reply and showed
"mid-turn", with the summary as its last prompt.

The summary (found by COMPACTED_SUMMARY_PREFIX, as the user factory
does) is now skipped outright: neither a prompt nor activity, so the
last turn neither restarts nor stretches across the idle gap, and after
a mid-turn compaction Claude's next entries carry on the same turn. On
the session that showed it, the row now reads finished, with 29 turns
(three were compaction summaries) and the real last prompt.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An async agent that stops with background work of its own sends an
interim notification ("is waiting on its own background work"), which
is rightly not its end. When it later reports through SubagentHandback,
the notification that follows keeps that same summary; only its
<result> says the report "was delivered to you". So the end was skipped
as interim too, and the agent stayed "running" for as long as its
session stayed active: on the foldyard session that showed it, a week.

Notifications now carry their <result>, and one is interim only when
its result doesn't say the report was delivered. On that session the
agent now ends at its hand-back, and nothing is left without an end.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
/exit (or any way out) writes no entry; the only trace is a trailing
`cost-state` line, written as the process goes, with no uuid and no
timestamp. The parser dropped it, so a session you quit kept showing
its background work as running (and the row as waiting, or mid-turn)
until the page's one-hour cap ran out.

recent.session_exit reads the session file's tail for it on every build,
outside the memo (the line isn't cached, so it can't move the memo key).
A cost-state after every entry with a uuid, and every queued
notification, means the process has exited; a resume adds entries after
it. Across the local archive, 583 of 633 cost-state lines end their
file, and every other one is followed by entries only after a gap of at
least 35 s. It is dated startTime + totalDuration, but never before the
session's last entry, since a resumed session's figures can add up to an
earlier time.

After an exit, work with no end ends `exited` at the exit (the page says
"ended with the session" and draws a hollow bar), pending wake-ups are
dropped, and an open final turn is over, so the row is done. The parser
now skips cost-state silently instead of warning about it.

Leaving this as it is. The page is docs/agents.md in foldyard, added by twistco/foldyard#156, which hasn't merged yet, so its docs site doesn't have it. The link will resolve once that PR merges.

@daaain Understood. You’re keeping the link for the guide in twistco/foldyard#156. Its availability depends on that PR merging and the docs site deploying. I won’t press for a replacement.

It was a full-width line between the header and the list, so the list
jumped down whenever the data went stale and back up when it caught up.
It now sits right-aligned beside the theme toggle, only as wide as its
text; on a phone it takes a line of its own under the bar.

The project's cache manager was kept before its display name was
resolved, so when resolving failed the next row of that project skipped
the lookup and then hit a KeyError outside the try, which took the whole
page down. The manager is now kept only once the name is known.

Review on #367.

Do not emit links to unwritten session pages.

A single-project watch can refresh rows from the shared cache for projects that it did not render. _default_href still emits links for those rows, so following the link can produce a missing-file page. Under --combined only the index still names each session's file, so the
recent page linked every row to a page nothing writes, on the full run
and on the watch's per-tick refresh alike. Both now leave the link out,
and the title shows as plain text.

Review on #367.

Opening or closing a row, and a refresh or clock tick that moves rows,
now animate by FLIP: measure every row and group heading as drawn, make
the change, measure again, and play each part back from where it was
with the Web Animations API. Moves are a transform (a row moving up is
drawn above the rows it passes), a row that grew is revealed by
clip-path, and a new row or an open row's new prompt or last message
fades in; the rest of a redrawn panel doesn't, so a refresh doesn't
blink it. A closing panel leaves an inert, aria-hidden copy fading where
it was while the rows below slide up over it.

Rows animate paint properties only; the list's own height is the one
layout-driven animation, so the card's edge and the legend move with
the rows. Every motion comes from one before/after measurement, so a
change mid-motion carries on from what is drawn. Only parts on screen
move; the first draw and filter/grouping changes are instant, and
prefers-reduced-motion turns it all off.

Rows now carry an opaque background (--rc-surface, the card's colour,
the canvas at phone width) so a sliding row covers the ones it passes.

test/recent_live_fixture.py (RecentLive) writes sessions in four
projects as real JSONL, one in each state the page tells apart (mid-turn,
waiting on background work, an API error, finished), and moves them on
stage by stage: a tool call, a finish, a question, a new session,
background work reporting back. Each stage goes through the real full
run, so the page shows what recent.py reads from real transcripts.
Entries are stamped at or before the clock's now (a stamp ahead of it
would outrank the next stage) and each write moves its file's mtime on
by 2 s, past the cache's 1 s freshness window.

The same stages are:

- an end-to-end browser test (test_recent_live_browser.py): the page
opened from disk, each stage's order, states, counts, the open row's
content, a session link and grouping checked; wait_for_stage prompts
the page to reload with a visibilitychange instead of waiting for its
  15 s tick, so it runs in about 2.5 s;
- chapter 7 of the demo videos and a supercut beat (record.py), now
  published, with the chapter also embedded on docs/recent-sessions.md;
  the demos page counts its chapters instead of saying "Six";
- `just recent-play`, which plays the stages against a sandbox page you
open in your own browser, on a timer or with --step, printing the
page's repo-relative path for a dev box with no browser.

Each demo scene gets a sandbox directory of its own: the cache remembers
the database paths it has set up in this process, so one deleted and
recreated under it would be taken as ready.

foldyard 0.5.0's [box].packages bakes system packages into a cached
image layer, built once and rebuilt when the list or the base image
changes. It replaces four [[box.tools]] steps that apt-installed on
every fresh box (apt lists, just, nodejs, and `playwright install-deps
chromium`), and with them the apt cache volume and its keep-cache step.

The Chromium half of the list is what `playwright install-deps
chromium` installs on Debian 13, the box's base: Playwright's `tools`
(xvfb and the fonts the pages and demo videos render with) and
`chromium` (the shared libraries). install-deps kept that in step with
the Playwright pin by itself; test/test_foldyard_config.py does now,
reading Playwright's nativeDeps for the installed version and naming
any package [box].packages lacks (it checks arm64 still borrows x64's
lists). The browser download stays a per-box step, from its cache.

UV_FROZEN=1 and `uv sync --frozen` for the warm-up, as foldyard's own
repo does: a bare `uv run` (or `uv run --group demos`) in the box would
otherwise re-resolve and rewrite uv.lock as root on the shared mount.

The floor rises to 0.5.0, since an older fy ignores `packages`.

Verified from the host: the box comes up with the layer baked, `just
test-browser` passes in it (393 passed), and `just recent-play` and
`just demos --only recent` run there, uv.lock untouched.
