Supersedes #280 (by @evoskamp, whose commit is kept), finished with the review follow-ups: main merged in, is_safe_image_source made public for plugins and documented. Closes #277.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Image exports accept only valid PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP data. Unsupported or malformed images show a placeholder.
    • Image sources are escaped before being added to HTML, helping protect exports from unsafe content.
  • Documentation
    • Updated image export and plugin guidance to cover image validation and HTML escaping.

The embedded-image path interpolated an image's media_type and base64
data straight into an <img src="..."> attribute with no escaping,
allowlist, or base64 validation. These fields come from transcript JSON
and can carry content that did not originate from the user (tool/MCP-
returned images, fetched web content), so a crafted media_type such as
`png"><script>...</script>` broke out of the src attribute and injected
a live script that runs when the generated HTML is opened under file://.

Add a shared _is_safe_image_source guard in image_export.py that
allowlists the media type (png/jpeg/gif/webp, excluding scriptable SVG)
and validates the base64, applied to both embedded and referenced
modes. Escape the final src at both HTML <img> sinks. This mirrors the
guards already present on the tool-result image path.

The markdown output path (![](data:...)) intentionally keeps the raw
data URL but still benefits from the upstream allowlist and validation.

Adds regression tests for the attribute-breakout media_type, SVG
rejection, invalid base64, referenced-mode rejection, and end-to-end
HTML-sink escaping.

Conflicts: main made referenced-mode image names content-addressed and
dropped export_image's counter argument. The resolution keeps the
allowlist/base64 gate ahead of main's atomic write, and the new tests
call export_image without counter.

Three tests added on main since this branch fed fake image data
("first", "ZZFIRSTZZ"…) that isn't valid base64. The gate now renders
those as [Image] placeholders, so the markers are padded to valid
base64 and still unique in the rendered page.

Review follow-up (cboos): is_safe_image_source (was _is_safe_image_source)
is re-exported from claude_code_log.plugins next to is_safe_web_url, so
a plugin that builds an <img src> data URL gets the same allowlist (no
SVG) and strict base64 check as the core. It's documented in
dev-docs/plugins.md §4.1 and in the §4.2 helper-per-context table.

The tool-result image path had its own copy of the same allowlist and
base64 check; it now calls the shared gate, so all three image sinks
have one definition.

Walkthrough

Image exports and tool-result formatting now validate image media types and base64 data. HTML image sinks escape the source. The plugin API exposes the shared validator.

A shared helper accepts PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP sources with strictly valid base64. Embedded and referenced exports return None for rejected sources. Tool-result formatting uses the helper, and the plugin API exposes it. Documentation and tests cover validation and plugin access.

HTML image sinks escape the source before inserting it into the src attribute. Tests cover escaping hostile sources. Several image test payload markers were lengthened without changing their assertions.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: embedded image data URLs get HTML escaping and a media-type and base64 allowlist to prevent stored XSS. The raw summary confirms this. The html sinks escape the src, export_image rejects unsafe sources, and is_safe_image_source is added. The objectives state the same aim, closing issue #277 on stored XSS in embedded images. The title is specific and matches the primary change, so it passes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #277 requires an allowlist for PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP, strict base64 validation, HTML escaping at both embedded-image sinks, and regression tests. is_safe_image_source enforces the allowlist and base64.b64decode(..., validate=True). export_image applies the check to embedded and referenced modes. format_image_content and HtmlRenderer._format_image escape the returned src. The tests cover hostile media types, SVG, invalid base64, quoted data, valid media types, and both HTML sinks.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to Issue #277. The shared safety helper, tool-result integration, referenced-mode validation, plugin export, documentation, and regression tests support the same image data-URL safety boundary. Fixture updates make existing image payloads valid under strict base64 validation. No demonstrated unrelated change requires removal.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 63.64% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 10 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Exercise the HTML sink’s escaping path.

The hostile media type is rejected by export_image, so format_image_content does not call escape_html(src). Add a separate test that monkeypatches the exporter bound in claude_code_log.html.assistant_formatters to return a source containing a quote, then assert that the quote is escaped inside the src attribute. Keep the rejection test as well.

CodeRabbit on #370: the end-to-end test feeds a hostile media type,
which the gate rejects before either sink's escape_html runs. These
tests stub export_image to return a src with a quote in it and check
that both sinks (assistant_formatters.format_image_content and
HtmlRenderer._format_image) escape it; removing either escape_html
makes its test fail.
