feat(email): whitelist purpose addresses through Settings and CLI - #1002
Email intake accepted arbitrary +tags even when no handler watched the address. This adds explicit runtime purpose addresses: Settings and agent-box-email addresses register an address with a purpose, worker profile and batching window, without a rebuild or SMTP restart.
The SMTP filter rejects unregistered/disabled recipients at RCPT, before accepting transport responsibility. Registration installs an exact-topic standing watch before enabling reception; editing first defers new reception with SMTP 451 so a failed handler change stays closed without permanently bouncing mail. Disable preserves the handler for accepted mail. Address identity is case-insensitive, matching the existing bus, and conflicting older watches are refused.
Both backends provision root-parented per-user registries (2750 user:smtpd, files 0640) and grant Settings/agent services write access only to their own directory. The filter reads bounded non-secret metadata rather than private webhook state. Sender authentication and envelope ownership remain enforced.
Migration: reception becomes deny by default. Register every intended address after installing this release, including any untagged address. Existing watches do not implicitly whitelist addresses; remove an older automatic rule for the same address before replacing it. Previously queued messages continue through their existing handler. No AWS cost, IAM or networking changes.
Validation and review:
41 email/authentication/registry tests and 7 Settings/watch tests.
All 61 aarch64 native checks (run sequentially with GC_FREE_SPACE_DIVISOR=10 to fit this host; same inventory as ci-native).
Module, golden and native artifacts regenerated; diff checked.
Focused correctness and security source self-review (CodeRabbit is currently rate-limited): user/domain ownership, exact routing, bounded reads, atomic publication, failure behavior, HTML escaping and CSRF.
Chromium desktop/mobile previews of the real Settings panel with dummy data, rendered inside a Nix build sandbox.
Merge is currently blocked by the new repository ruleset Require CI and automated review, created while this change was in progress. It requires CI gate, AWS template gate and Azure template gate; those contexts are introduced by pending PR #648 and are absent from the current master workflows. Existing CI, all five VM lanes, SonarCloud and all 61 local aarch64 native checks pass at 180a917. There are no review threads or requested changes. No policy bypass has been performed.
Resolve them on the pull request, or post @coderabbitai approve as a new top-level comment to resolve them and request approval.

Walkthrough
Inbound email now requires per-user address registration. The CLI and Settings manage address routes, and the SMTP filter checks each recipient before acceptance. Runtime directories, service permissions, tests, and email guidance are updated to support this flow.
Changes: Email Address Management
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Provision registry storage and service access bin/agentbox, modules/agent-box.nix, modules/agent-box.nix.in, nix/runtime.nix, tests/email-options.nix, tests/test_email.py
Runtime rules create shared registry directories and per-user address directories. Agent and settings services receive write access for opted-in users. Tests check the directory mode, ownership, and service permissions.
Validate and publish address routes modules/agent-box.nix, modules/src/email-cli.py, tests/test_email.py
The CLI validates bounded per-user registries and address settings, installs webhook handlers, and publishes route changes under a nonblocking lock. Tests cover route updates and invalid registry or address data.
The SMTP filter checks recipients against the registry. Unknown and disabled addresses receive 550; pending routes and registry failures receive 451. Tests and email guides cover recipient checks, registration, and reception behavior.
Manage addresses in Settings modules/agent-box.nix, modules/src/settings-daemon.py, tests/test-watch-profiles.py, tests/golden/web/payloads/agent-box-settings/bin/agent-box-settings
Settings lists and edits registered addresses through the CLI. Email-address handlers are excluded from ordinary watch controls and cannot be removed through the webhook unsubscribe route. Tests cover rendering, submissions, and origin checks.
defangdevs/agent-box#995: Adds tagged-recipient acceptance and routing metadata that this change replaces with exact address registration.

Reject overlapping prefix watches before enabling an address.
If an older watch on email:agent+github/* accepts email events, registering agent+github/alerts@box.test succeeds. The older watch can then dispatch mail with its profile instead of the registered profile. Check existing watches with the bus's topic-matching rules before enabling the address.

Update the conflict check over watches to use the bus’s existing topic-matching
rules instead of exact topic equality, and reject registration when any matching
watch other than the email-address watch can handle the address before enabling
it.
Before removing the managed watches, send a message to a registered address and use a recording spawner to assert the selected profile. The current test checks registration and observer delivery separately, so it can pass if accepted mail does not reach its configured worker.

Obsolete-domain registry entries no longer break reads and can be disabled;
reject profiles without a HARNESS; reject overlapping prefix watches; check
final registry size before writing pending state; put agent-box-email on the
agent runtime PATH when email is enabled.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RVYuG3CUsg3QnmorChKhjV
Fixed: removed-domain registry entries no longer make the registry unreadable, and they can be disabled; profiles with no HARNESS (or shell) are refused before enabling; overlapping email:user+tag/* prefix watches are refused; the final serialized registry size is checked before any pending state is written; agent-box-email is now in the agent runtime packages when email is enabled.
Not changed: (a) --ignore-sender clearing: the webhook CLI has no option to clear a mute, and the email topic is never seeded with one, so there is nothing to clear. (b) ReadWritePaths on running services: agentbox update restarts the settings and agent session units (restart_units), so they pick up the new path; a bare apply leaves running units as they were, as for other sandbox changes. (c) Watch/registry removal coordination and the managed-watch delivery test are larger design/test work; not done here.
CI on afe15dd fails in "Native checks" for two reasons (CI gate is red only because of it):
agent-box-module-generated-up-to-date: modules/agent-box.nix is stale relative to modules/src (the email CLI changes). Fix: run nix run .#assemble and commit the result.
agent-box-email flake8 gate: E306 expected 1 blank line before a nested definition at line 240 (def covers(topic):). Fix: add a blank line before the nested def.
I did not push to this branch because it is not mine. Whoever owns the PR should apply both, regenerate tests/native/expected and tests/golden if the render changes, and re-push.
CI run 42156898288 on afe15dd failed in Native checks for two reasons: modules/agent-box.nix is stale (needs nix run .#assemble), and modules/src/email-cli.py:239 has flake8 E306 (no blank line before nested def covers). No live session owned this branch, so I did not push to it. The fix is one commit on fix/1002-ci-assemble-flake8 (a4c9670), based on afe15dd. I have not run the native checks locally. To apply it, cherry-pick a4c9670 onto this branch or fast-forward to it.

Email intake accepted arbitrary
+tagseven when no handler watched the address. This adds explicit runtime purpose addresses: Settings andagent-box-email addressesregister an address with a purpose, worker profile and batching window, without a rebuild or SMTP restart.
Both backends provision root-parented per-user registries (
2750 user:smtpd, files0640) and grant Settings/agent services write access only to their own directory. The filter reads bounded non-secret metadata rather than private webhook state. Sender authentication and envelope ownership remain enforced.Migration: reception becomes deny by default. Register every intended address after installing this release, including any untagged address. Existing watches do not implicitly whitelist addresses; remove an older automatic rule for the same address before replacing it. Previously queued messages continue through their existing handler. No AWS cost, IAM or networking changes.
