Review-only slice of #604 (v3.2.0 "Confluence")

#604 is 428 files, over CodeRabbit's 100-file limit. This slice carries the non-mapper code: core, APU, PPU, frontend, netplay, libretro, mobile, cheevos, cosim, shaders, the harness tests, fuzz, scripts, CI and the Android/iOS projects (84 files), byte-identical to release/v3.2.0-confluence. 125 test snapshots and 71 screenshots are left out of every slice.

Never merged. It is closed once its review is answered; fixes land on #604. Its commit skips only the cargo-clippy hook (maintainer decision, 2026-10-14: a slice of the release's Rust files does not compile alone); the full tree passes every gate on #604.

Note

High Risk
Touches core CPU bus timing/open-bus behavior, emulation epoch/determinism, netplay locking and session teardown, and persistent save paths (FDS/battery); incorrect behavior would desync netplay or corrupt saves.

Overview
v3.2.0 "Confluence" bumps the workspace and Android app to 3.2.0, raises EMULATION_EPOCH to 4 (documented mapper/hardware behavior changes), and refreshes CI (fuzz gate expects 9 targets, taiki-e/install-action v2.87.27), Gradle 9.8.1, and dependency pins (zip 9, etc.).

Emulation & core surface: Adds Datach barcode reader support end-to-end (Nes::scan_barcode, bus forwarding, session policy blocking scans during movie/netplay). Caches prg_may_unmap so PRG open-bus reads above $8000 stay correct for mappers 228/235; debug_peek_ppu uses side-effect-free ppu_peek instead of save/restore around CHR reads. Save-data dirty flags feed battery persistence (desktop/web policies skip compares when clean). APU hot path skips sanitize when expansion audio is zero; BlipBuf / FilterChain split bounded vs branched paths (byte-identical). Cheevos redacts login tokens in Debug and handles NULL HTTP completion callbacks. Cosim exporter gains Four Score / Vaus / Game Genie stimulus flags, --sprite-limit-off, --fb-every-frame, and safer C framebuffer export.

Desktop frontend: Scan Barcode UI and i18n; zip 9 entry-name API; new atomic files default to 0o600 on Unix; audio queue uses AtomicU32 slots with cache-line-aligned head/tail; present buffer swaps ~240 KiB instead of copying; netplay tick uses try_lock (emulation thread stays idle during netplay) plus 5s peer stall detection; wasm RA uses a stack closure instead of transmute for ra_do_frame.

Android: FDS disk images persist under fds-saves/ with atomic writes and bootSavedDisk under pristine ROM identity; keep screen on while unpaused gameplay; fixes GPU path so ARGB frames stay fresh for screenshots/clips; clears pendingSurface on surface destroy.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Datach barcode scanning for compatible cartridges, with input validation and clear status messages.
    • FDS disk changes are now saved and restored across sessions on Android and iOS.
    • Netplay now batches input updates and detects stalled peer connections.
    • Single-player save states are smaller while remaining compatible with full-size states.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of cartridge mappings, graphics rendering, and save data across supported platforms.
  • Release
    • Updated the app version to 3.2.0.

A CodeRabbit review slice of release/v3.2.0-confluence (#604), which is
over the 100-file limit. 84 files, byte-identical to that branch.

Committed with SKIP=cargo-clippy, by the maintainer's decision of
2026-10-14: a slice of the release's Rust files does not compile on its
own, so the workspace clippy hook cannot pass here by construction. Every
other hook ran. The complete tree passes clippy and every CI gate on
release/v3.2.0-confluence.

📝 Walkthrough

RustyNES 3.2.0 adds Datach barcode scanning and FDS disk persistence across supported platforms. It updates netplay input batching, emulator and rendering paths, save-state handling, archive compatibility, CI, capture tests, and developer scripts.

Changes: Release and developer tooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release metadata and build configuration
Cargo.toml, android/*, ios/project.yml, crates/rustynes-cosim/Cargo.toml, crates/rustynes-libretro/rustynes_libretro.info
Version metadata advances to 3.2.0. Android updates its Compose plugin and Gradle wrapper. The workspace removes the test-harness dependency declaration.
CI, security, and fuzz targets
.github/workflows/*, fuzz/*, .gitignore
CI requires nine fuzz targets, including the new foreign-movie importer target. Security and coverage jobs update taiki-e/install-action; .gitignore excludes /salvaged_tmp/.
Release and performance scripts
scripts/release-automation/*, scripts/perf/*, scripts/coverage/coverage.py, crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/v21_best_effort_sweep.rs
New scripts run release gates and check branch containment. Benchmark scripts accept package selection and add load-aware queued runs. Mapper tier fallback data and the BestEffort count are updated.

FDS disk persistence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Saved-disk boot and mobile API
crates/rustynes-mobile/Cargo.toml, crates/rustynes-mobile/src/lib.rs
NesController::boot_saved_disk validates and parses saved disk bytes, preserves the pristine disk identity, and installs the image only if the same game remains loaded. The mobile tests cover identity preservation and rejection on cartridges.
Platform loading and dirty-disk flush
android/app/src/main/java/com/doublegate/rustynes/MainActivity.kt, ios/RustyNES/AppModel.swift, ios/RustyNES/EmulatorCore.swift
Android and iOS load saved FDS images by pristine identity and atomically write dirty images. They clear the dirty flag only after a successful write. Android also updates screen wake-lock state while emulation runs.

Datach barcode scanning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Core barcode API and scan state
crates/rustynes-core/src/bus.rs, crates/rustynes-core/src/nes.rs, crates/rustynes-core/src/lib.rs
The core exposes barcode-reader availability, scan submission, and scan progress. scan_barcode reports malformed input or the absence of a reader. Tests cover validation and restoring a mid-scan snapshot.
Frontend scan workflow and restrictions
crates/rustynes-frontend/src/ui_shell.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/app.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/session_policy.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/i18n.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/icons.rs
The Emulation menu and barcode window accept validated codes for reader-equipped cartridges. Movie and netplay session rules block scans. The app reports scan results and the interface includes English and Spanish strings.
Barcode game test coverage
crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/external_extended.rs
Commercial-ROM tests compare no-scan, EAN-13, and EAN-8 outcomes in two Datach games.

Netplay protocol and session updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol 8 input-batch format
crates/rustynes-netplay/src/message.rs, crates/rustynes-netplay/src/connection.rs
Protocol 8 adds InputBatch for consecutive player inputs, with a maximum batch size of 255. Sync messages use the RNE8 magic, and protocol-7 peers are recognized as older emulators.
Batch input ingestion and retransmission
crates/rustynes-netplay/src/session.rs, crates/rustynes-netplay/src/spectator.rs
Rollback sessions resend consecutive confirmed inputs in batches and ingest individual or batched inputs through shared validation. Spectators expand batches into frame inputs. The per-frame rollback snapshot vector is removed.
Handshake and peer-progress handling
crates/rustynes-netplay/src/mesh_net.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/netplay_ui.rs
The mesh host waits until roster resends finish before handing off the transport. The netplay UI reports connection loss when confirmed-frame progress has not occurred for more than five seconds.

Emulation core and audio behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mapper reads and header correction
crates/rustynes-core/src/bus.rs, crates/rustynes-gamedb/src/lib.rs, crates/rustynes-core/src/hardware_options.rs
The bus caches whether a mapper can leave PRG addresses unmapped. Game-database matching tries submapper candidates and applies zero-submapper corrections to NES 2.0 headers. The emulation epoch advances to 4.
PPU pixel and snapshot state
crates/rustynes-ppu/src/ppu.rs, crates/rustynes-ppu/src/snapshot.rs, crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/snapshot_schema_audit.rs
The PPU caches emphasis lookup state across reset, mask writes, and restore. Pixel rendering reuses sprite-visibility checks, and secondary OAM clearing now occurs on even clear-phase cycles.
APU sample and filter processing
crates/rustynes-apu/src/apu.rs, crates/rustynes-apu/src/blip.rs, crates/rustynes-apu/src/mixer.rs, crates/rustynes-apu/src/noise.rs, crates/rustynes-apu/src/pulse.rs
The APU uses bounded sample insertion on the default mix path. BlipBuf adds explicit sanitization and bounded insertion, and filter chains call dedicated high-pass and low-pass methods. Noise and pulse descriptions are updated.

Frontend, ABI, and rendering paths

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dirty-state-aware battery writes
crates/rustynes-core/src/nes.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/battery_policy.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/battery_save.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/web_battery.rs
Battery write policy receives mapper save-data dirty state. A clean tracked save skips byte comparison; dirty or untracked data remains eligible for writes.
Frontend audio, frame, and lock handling
crates/rustynes-frontend/src/audio.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/audio_dsp.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/emu.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/present_buffer.rs
Audio sample storage uses 32-bit atomics and cache-aligned queue indices. Presentation swaps frame buffers, EmuHandle adds nonblocking try_lock, and reverb uses a precomputed comb gain.
ABI framebuffer and save-state handling
crates/rustynes-cosim/src/lib.rs, crates/rustynes-ios/src/ffi.rs, crates/rustynes-ios/src/gfx_metal.rs, crates/rustynes-libretro/src/lib.rs, crates/rustynes-libretro/src/abi_tests.rs
Cosim supports unaligned framebuffer output buffers. iOS Metal renders caller-provided frame data. Single-console libretro states use slim snapshots, while tests check restoration and compatibility with full-size states.
Shader sampling and decode
crates/rustynes-gfx-shaders/src/*
Shaders sample mip level zero explicitly. Signal decoding caches packed texels while processing subsamples in the same source column.
Achievement callbacks and debug handling
crates/rustynes-cheevos/src/client.rs, crates/rustynes-cheevos/src/ffi.rs, crates/rustynes-cheevos/src/http.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/wasm_cheevos.rs
RaUser debug output redacts its login token. C server callbacks can be absent, and WebAssembly frame calls use a borrowed synchronous callback.

ZIP 9 archive compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
ZIP upgrades and fallible entry names
crates/rustynes-frontend/Cargo.toml, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/app.rs, crates/rustynes-hdpack/*, crates/rustynes-mobile/Cargo.toml, crates/rustynes-mobile/src/lib.rs, crates/rustynes-test-harness/Cargo.toml, crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/common/mod.rs
ZIP dependencies advance from version 8 to 9. Archive readers skip entries whose names cannot be decoded.

Capture and validation tooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Golden-export devices and frame capture
crates/rustynes-cosim/src/bin/nes_golden_export.rs
The exporter adds Four Score, Vaus, and Game Genie options, records configured devices in manifests, and can save each frame’s index framebuffer.
Model-aware scripted ROM captures
crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/common/mod.rs, crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/external_coverage.rs, crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/external_extended.rs
The harness adds Famicom model selection and scripted button inputs. Coverage expands to Famicom-wired dumps, mapper families, and scripted gameplay snapshots.
File permissions and platform state
crates/rustynes-frontend/src/atomic_write.rs, android/app/src/main/java/com/doublegate/rustynes/MainActivity.kt, android/app/src/main/java/com/doublegate/rustynes/NesSurfaceView.kt
New Unix atomic-write targets use mode 0o600. Android clears pending surface state when a surface is destroyed and updates the wake lock when the emulation state changes.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 56dbe

The release has three saved-data and session-safety problems to fix before merging. Reopening an FDS game on iOS can load stale disk data and later overwrite a newer save. Booting a saved disk on mobile can break an active movie or netplay session. A netplay timeout can let local emulation continue outside the session.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 56dbe

The main risks are localized to saved-game integrity: disk-save acknowledgement can race ongoing emulation, and reopening a disk on iOS can restore an older image before saving the current one. Checked protocol limits and identity checks contain other examined changes. No broader privilege expansion was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new Android FDS persistence caller snapshots disk bytes, writes outside the controller lock, then unconditionally clears the disk dirty flag. Emulation runs on Dispatchers.Default while ROM preparation can flush on Dispatchers.IO; onPause also flushes before onStop pauses execution. A disk write after the snapshot but before acknowledgement can therefore be marked clean without being persisted, defeating later retry and recovery. Each bridge method is locked individually, and AtomicFile protects replacement, but neither binds acknowledgement to the saved disk generation. The existing bridge API gains this exposure through the new persistence callers.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new iOS saved-disk restore runs before flushBatteryNow commits the outgoing disk. When the same disk is opened while its current session remains loaded, the incoming console can receive an older saved image, then replace the outgoing console after its newer image has been committed. Subsequent disk writes can overwrite that newer save with stale state. Atomic replacement and main-actor serialization do not correct this ordering. Normal closeGame flushes first, which contains the ordinary close-and-reopen path, but importAndOpen can invoke openGame without closing the active session first.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The traced persistence exposure is the current user's per-game save state. Desktop battery filenames derive from hexadecimal ROM hashes, and mobile FDS files use game identity within host-owned storage. The examined inputs do not establish arbitrary filename selection or broader filesystem authority; the retained lifecycle concerns affect durable progress for the selected disk.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Barcode scans mutate the emulation timeline but are not transported by movies or netplay. The desktop dispatcher refuses scans while either owns that timeline, then invokes the core under the emulator lock. The core parses the barcode before forwarding it and reports malformed input or an absent reader.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The desktop atomic writer preserves exclusive scratch-file creation, cleanup, synchronization, and replacement behavior; this PR changes new-file creation to owner-only permissions. Existing-target permissions and symlink resolution remain unchanged from the comparison base. A local attacker controlling the save directory is therefore a pre-existing boundary consideration, not an introduced arbitrary-write finding.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind FDS persistence acknowledgement to the captured disk generation, or quiesce and join emulation before the snapshot-to-commit transition. For same-identity replacement, finish the outgoing commit before restoring the incoming disk. These proposals address the identified ownership and recovery gaps without requiring a lock across filesystem I/O.

Explanation

The PR changes PPU chip-state behavior without changing the matching specification. In crates/rustynes-ppu/src/ppu.rs, the secondary-OAM clear now writes one byte only on even clear cycles (lines 5652-5658), changing serialized mid-scanline oam_bus_secondary state; the snapshot code serializes that buffer. The matching docs/ppu-2c02.md file is unchanged. The PR body explains the review slice and byte identity, but does not explain why no documentation update is needed.

Full details: Changelog Entry For User-Visible Changes

Explanation

The PR introduces multiple user-visible changes, including the Datach barcode reader UI and scan flow in crates/rustynes-frontend/src/ui_shell.rs and app.rs, FDS save persistence and screen-wake behavior on Android, and netplay protocol/session behavior. CHANGELOG.md is not changed, and its [Unreleased] section remains empty.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR cuts v3.2.0 ("Keystone"), adding a CPU instruction-fetch micro-cache, Datach barcode scanning across core/desktop/web/mobile, FDS disk persistence on desktop/Android/iOS, mobile screen wake-lock management, PAL/Dendy phase-alternating NTSC shader support, netplay peer-timeout detection, and release/benchmarking scripts.

Blocking issues

  • iOS FDS disk save data is lost when re-opening a running FDS game (AppModel.swift): In AppModel.openGame(_:), AppModel.bootSavedDiskIfAny(core, sha: entry.sha) runs before flushBatteryNow() (which calls flushFdsDiskIfDirty() on the outgoing self.emulator). Because core.hasBattery is false for FDS games, the periodic 1-second batteryTimer is never created (AppModel.swift), so FDS writes are only persisted during flushBatteryNow() / flushBatteryInBackground(). If a user saves in an FDS game and re-selects the same title from the library without backgrounding first, bootSavedDiskIfAny loads the stale on-disk .fds.sav (or nothing) into the new core before the outgoing session's dirty FDS image is written, discarding the in-memory session's FDS save into the newly booted core. Flush the outgoing emulator before calling bootSavedDiskIfAny (matching Android's order in MainActivity.kt).

Suggestions

  • iOS idle timer remains disabled while on the library screen (AppModel.swift, AppModel.swift): In applyRunState(), let isRunning = sceneActive && !menuPaused && !audioInterrupted && !routePaused does not check emulator != nil, and neither openGame(_:) nor closeGame() invokes applyRunState(). When the app becomes active on the library screen (handleScenePhase(true)) or after closeGame() sets emulator = nil, UIApplication.shared.isIdleTimerDisabled stays true, preventing the device from auto-locking when no game is loaded.
  • Android FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON is not cleared when EmulatorScreen disposes while running (MainActivity.kt, MainActivity.kt): updateScreenWakeLock(running) is only updated inside the while (isActive) frame loop. If the composable leaves composition or the coroutine is cancelled while keepScreenOn == true, neither the finally block nor onDispose calls (context as? MainActivity)?.updateScreenWakeLock(false).
  • No periodic FDS disk flush during gameplay on Android or iOS (MainActivity.kt, AppModel.swift): Desktop flushes dirty FDS disks every CHECK_PERIOD_FRAMES (~1s) via EmuCore::per_frame_host_io. On Android, the 60-frame check only runs when emulator.battery != null (cartridge SRAM), and on iOS batteryTimer only starts when core.hasBattery is true. An app crash or force-kill mid-session loses all FDS writes prior to onPause/backgrounding.
  • Nes::clear_save_data_dirty is never called by any save path (battery_save.rs, web_battery.rs, emu.rs): Nes::is_save_data_dirty documents that it reports changes since the last clear_save_data_dirty, and BatterySave::due_write / WebBattery::due_write pass nes.is_save_data_dirty(), but nothing in the workspace ever calls nes.clear_save_data_dirty(). Once a self-flashable mapper (GTROM / UNROM 512) modifies flash once, is_save_data_dirty() returns Some(true) for the rest of the session, falling back to the full up-to-512 KiB slice comparison every second. (If wired up, ensure the dirty flag is only cleared after a confirmed write or when last_written is guaranteed to force a retry on write failure.)
  • Frame 0 confirmation does not update last_peer_activity in netplay (netplay_ui.rs): last_confirmed_tracker is initialized to 0 (u32), so when frame 0 transitions to confirmed, confirmed > self.last_confirmed_tracker (0 > 0) is false. Using Option<u32> avoids skipping frame 0.
  • TOCTOU races on lock and queue files in scripts/perf/quiet_ab.sh: run_one checks [ -e "$busy" ], runs awk on /proc/loadavg, and then writes $measuring without holding an flock lock, so quiet_ab.sh heavy can pass its [ -e "$measuring" ] check simultaneously. Similarly, the inline Python in queue reads and rewrites $q without a lock, which can drop lines appended concurrently between read() and open(path, "w").

Nitpicks

  • signal_decode.wgsl: let cy = clamp(row, 0, i32(dim.y) - 1); is invariant across the inner for (var s = -half; s <= half; s = s + 1) loop and can be hoisted above it.
  • nes.rs: BarcodeScanError::Malformed can use #[from] on rustynes_mappers::BarcodeError instead of manual .map_err(BarcodeScanError::Malformed).
  • branch_contained.py: git(a.path, "branch", "--show-current") is invoked twice when --branch is omitted; reuse the first result.

Cursor Bugbot has reviewed your changes using high effort and found 2 potential issues.

Fix All in Cursor

Bugbot Autofix prepared fixes for both issues found in the latest run.

  • ✅ Fixed: FDS saves skip periodic flush
    • The emulation loop now checks the FDS disk every 60 frames and runs FdsSaves.flushIfDirty on Dispatchers.IO when it is dirty, matching the desktop host's once-a-second cadence.
  • ✅ Fixed: FDS flush races the loop
    • flushIfDirty now clears the dirty flag before copying the image, so a write that races the copy stays dirty; a failed write is remembered in a per-SHA retry set, and the method is @synchronized so concurrent flushes cannot write out of order.

differ; if comparison is unavailable, report the file as not verified rather
than treating it as contained.

stripped `text` for exact membership so substring matches do not count as
incorporated changes.

From #604's and #605's review, each re-checked against the code.

- netplay_ui.rs: the tick that ends a session on a peer timeout returned
`active: false`, which by `NetplayTick`'s own contract tells the caller
to run a single-player `run_frame()`: one stray frame on the failure
tick. Every other `fail()` path returns `active: true`. New test
  `the_peer_timeout_tick_is_still_active` (two loopback peers reach
InGame, the joiner goes silent, the host's last contact is backdated six
seconds, the failing tick must be active); reverting the line fails it.
- app.rs: a successful Datach scan now clears the history timeline, as a
Reset does (NF-13): a .rnm records input only, so a clip spanning the
scan could not replay it. The FDS disk-swap paths have the same, older
gap; ticketed T-HISTORY-DISK-SWAP rather than changed here.
- ui_shell.rs: loading a game without a reader returned before clearing
`show_barcode`, so the window reopened by itself on the next Datach
game. No unit test: the window is drawn inside the egui pass, which has
  no seam in this module.
- atomic_write.rs: property 5 ("mode applied at creation, then set
exactly") held only for files that already existed; a NEW file was left
  at `0o600 & ~umask`, narrower than 0o600 under a umask masking owner
bits. The exact set now runs for new files too. No new test: forcing
such a umask is process-wide and would race every other test creating
files; the existing umask test covers the exact-set path.

clippy -D warnings (default and `full`), frontend lib tests pass.

From #604's and #605's review.

Android (MainActivity.kt), two Cursor findings:
- A disk write could be lost. `diskIsDirty`, `diskImageBytes` and
`clearDiskDirty` are three separately locked bridge calls, the game loop
keeps running between them (until onStop, and in picture-in-picture),
and the flag was cleared AFTER the write, discarding a disk write that
landed between the copy and the clear. Now cleared BEFORE the copy, so a
write during the save sets it again; a failed file write is kept in a
`retry` set and flushed again; `flushIfDirty` is @synchronized.
- The disk was saved only from lifecycle events, so a process killed in
the background lost everything since the last one. The game loop now
checks it once a second, like the battery, on Dispatchers.IO.
Both flavours compile (compileFossDebugKotlin, compilePlayDebugKotlin) and
the 20 foss unit tests pass.

iOS (AppModel.swift):
- Reopening the running FDS game booted the saved file BEFORE the
outgoing disk's newest writes were flushed to it, and the late flush was
then overwritten by the new core's first disk write (CodeRabbit). The
flush moves ahead of `bootSavedDiskIfAny`; `currentEntry` and
`emulator` are still the outgoing game's there, so it keys and reads the
  outgoing disk as before.
- The same clear-first change as Android, with a retry set; the
background flush also runs for a disk waiting in it, and ends its task
with `defer` like the battery path (CodeRabbit).
Not compiled here (no macOS): the iOS workflow on this branch is the check.
A periodic iOS disk flush is ticketed (T-IOS-FDS-PERIODIC), as is a
durable-write helper for every iOS store (T-IOS-DURABLE-WRITE).

Bridge (rustynes-mobile): `boot_saved_disk` replaced the console without
the NF-18 timeline guard every sibling mutator applies; it now refuses
under a movie or netplay session and resets `frozen`/`coin_frames` like a
state load. Both apps call it before the controller can run, so this
guards the public API. New test `a_saved_disk_is_refused_while_a_movie_
records`; removing the check fails it.

CodeRabbit on #604 and #605. `--fb-every-frame` with
`--inject-instructions` was silently ignored: the injection branch runs
instead of the frame loop, no `index_fb_frames.bin` is written, and the
exit is 0, the "armed but empty" golden this exporter already refuses for
the APU trace. `--press-start` with it was refused, but only after the
output directory, the devices and the traces had been set up.

Both combinations are now refused in `injection_error` (the pure,
testable check), and `validate_injection` runs first thing in `main`,
before any side effect. The per-frame capture's reservation is capped at
600 frames (about 70 MiB); a larger run still grows the Vec, but a typo in
`--frames` can no longer abort on the reservation alone. No golden
changes: the export path of every recipe is unchanged.

Also a test for the C ABI's unaligned `rn_index_framebuffer` branch, which
no caller reached (CodeRabbit on #605): an odd address must receive the
same bytes as the aligned copy. Its first draft zero-filled the buffer,
and a mutant copying half the frame passed (this ROM's frame is mostly
index 0); with a sentinel fill the mutant is caught.

45 cosim tests pass; clippy -D warnings (all features), fmt.

The review of #604 and #605 (CodeRabbit, Codex) found nine defects in the
three tools promoted from salvaged/ at 5a7d8b2. Each reproduced or read
against the script before it was changed.

quiet_ab.sh
- Admission was check-then-touch on two marker files, so two runs, or a
run and a heavy job, could both pass; and two `heavy` jobs shared one
BUSY file, the first to finish removing it under the second. Now one
flock: a measurement holds it exclusive, `heavy` holds it shared.
BUSY/MEASURING are informational. Tested: two concurrent heavy jobs ran
together, BUSY stayed until the last finished, and each exit status
  (7, 1) propagated.
- `run_one` returned the status of its trailing grep, not ab_check.sh's;
the queue now records `rc=` per line, and an `.inprogress` marker names
an interrupted run, refusing to start until it is dealt with.

branch_contained.py
- Containment was a substring test: `return value;` passed against
`return value + 1;`. A line must now EQUAL a stripped line of the file.
- An untracked file passed when only its path existed on main; now its
  contents must match.
- Binary changes carry no lines and were invisible; they are compared by
blob (committed) or file (uncommitted) now.
Synthetic-repository tests: a squash merge passes; the substring trap,
an unmerged binary and a differing untracked file each fail, named.

run_gates.sh
- `--only` with no argument looped forever (`shift 2` with one argument
left fails without shifting, and there is no set -e): `timeout 5`
exited 124. Now exit 2, "--only needs a regex".
- The header claimed "every Rust gate CI runs"; it says lint, build and
test, and names the four CI jobs it does not transcribe (bench, fuzz,
coverage, libretro-cross). The README row says the same.
- `--help` printed through the first code line after a header edit; it
now stops at the header's last line (same for quiet_ab.sh).

shellcheck and ruff clean.

Review-body closeout for this review slice. Every inline thread has a reply and is resolved; the fixes landed on #604, the PR that will merge.

  • CodeRabbit body (56dbe97): it repeats its inline findings; each is answered in its thread.
  • Cursor Bugbot autofix offers: not pushed. This branch is a review-only slice, and each finding was fixed on release: v3.2.0 "Confluence" #604 instead, in some cases differently from the offered patch (see the thread replies for which commit and why).

doublegate added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 14, 2026
4f9cac8 added an in-progress marker so an interrupted A/B is re-queued
deliberately instead of lost, but wrote it AFTER removing the entry from
the queue file. An interruption between the two steps still lost the
entry, and the marker was removed even when appending the result to
FILE.done failed (CodeRabbit on #605, follow-up to the original thread).

Order now: write and check FILE.inprogress; remove the entry; run; append
the result; remove the marker only if the append succeeded. Interrupted
between marker and removal, the entry is in both places and the existing
startup refusal names it. A failed removal removes the marker, keeps the
entry queued and exits 2. A failed append keeps the marker and exits 2.
The queue rewrite also went through `open(path, "w")`, which truncates
in place, so dying mid-write lost every queued entry; it now writes
FILE.tmp and renames it over the queue (os.replace).

Verified in a throwaway repository with a stub ab_check.sh
(QUIET_LOAD=9999):
normal, two entries -> rc 0, both in .done, queue empty, no marker
removal fails (.tmp dir) -> rc 2, entry still queued, no marker
append fails (.done dir) -> rc 2, marker kept naming the entry
  run killed mid-benchmark -> entry gone from queue, marker names it;
rerun refuses with rc 2 and names it
shellcheck clean.
