Description

A security review of the scripts and workflows found four weak spots. This closes all of them.

Raw HTML and script-scheme URLs shipped in the signed database. The build rendered description/details/specs with marked and no sanitizer, so <script>, <img onerror> and [x](javascript:...) reached the *_html columns verbatim, and z.url() accepted javascript:, data: and file: on every url field because the URL parser does. Scoped validation passed an entry carrying all of these with no errors.

  • pnpm validate now refuses raw HTML in prose (E305) and any scheme but http(s) on url fields and on links inside prose (E128). The check reads marked's own lexer so the verdict is the renderer's: <The Lord's Funeral> in a tracklist stays text.
  • The build escapes raw HTML and renders an unsafe link as its text regardless, through its own Marked instance so the overrides never touch the global instance validate lexes with.
  • The shared rule lives in scripts/lib/prose-markup.ts; the generated JSON schemas carry an ^https?:// pattern on every url.
  • The corpus had no HTML tokens and one ftp:// link (dbx 160A), which is removed.

Validation and the build followed symlinks. getYamlFiles lists names and readFileSync follows a name wherever it points, so a committed data/software/x.yaml -> /dev/zero was an unbounded read in the Validate and PR Review jobs, in the racks import lane's pnpm validate --files, and in every contributor's pre-commit hook. loadYamlFile and loadYamlFileWithPositions now go through readRegularFile, which lstats first and refuses a link or a non-regular file, and the scoped --files mode puts each path through checkContainedRegularFile like validate-urls already did.

url-health.yml held a contents-write token for its whole run, through pnpm install and thousands of requests to contributor-chosen URLs, then pushed to main with credentials persisted. It is now two jobs on the assign-ids.yml pattern: a read-only check job that hands the refreshed cache on as an artifact, and a commit job that installs nothing, verifies the artifact is a version 1 cache touching nothing else, and pushes that one file. The dispatch input reaches the shell through env rather than ${{ }} in run:.

fix-urls wrote whatever a server redirected to as the entry's official url, so a lapsed maker domain bought by a squatter would have been promoted to the maker's page on --apply. A redirect that leaves the registrable domain is now reported and never written, on both the cached and the live path (the live path applied no filter at all), and the string replacement no longer reads $-patterns out of a server-chosen target.

CLAUDE.md and docs/VALIDATION_ERRORS.md record the new rules.

Type of Change

  • New software/plugin entry
  • New hardware entry
  • New manufacturer entry
  • Update to existing entry
  • Bug fix
  • Schema or script change

Checklist

  • I have run pnpm validate and it passes
  • YAML files follow the existing format
  • Manufacturer exists (or I'm adding it in this PR)
  • Categories and formats are from the schema files
  • Identifiers are accurate, if provided (bundle IDs, etc.)
  • Any hp I added or changed names its source in the description

Additional Notes

Verified locally: pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test (760 passing, 37 files), pnpm validate over all 21,048 entries, pnpm format:check, pnpm generate:schemas and pnpm generate:context freshness, and pnpm build 0. New tests cover E128 on entry and link URLs and on prose links, E305 on inline and block HTML, the lexer-as-text case, symlink refusal in validateFile and readRegularFile, and the renderer escaping and link-dropping behaviour. No schema_version bump: no SQLite column changes.

Whether Studio sanitizes HTML on its side was not checked here (racks repo out of scope); after this change the catalog no longer relies on it either way.

…ies and off-site redirects

A security review of the scripts and workflows found four weak spots;
this closes all of them.

Raw HTML and script-scheme URLs shipped in the signed database. The
build rendered description/details/specs with marked and no sanitizer,
so <script>, <img onerror> and [x](javascript:...) reached the *_html
columns verbatim, and z.url() accepted javascript:, data: and file: for
every url field because the URL parser does. pnpm validate now refuses
raw HTML in prose (E305) and any scheme but http(s) on url fields and
on links inside prose (E128), reading marked's own lexer so the verdict
is the renderer's; the build escapes raw HTML and drops unsafe link
destinations regardless, through its own Marked instance. The shared
rule lives in scripts/lib/prose-markup.ts, and the generated JSON
schemas carry the http(s) pattern. The corpus had no HTML and one
ftp:// link (dbx 160A), which is removed.

Validation and the build followed symlinks. getYamlFiles lists names
and readFileSync follows a name wherever it points, so a committed
data/software/x.yaml -> /dev/zero was an unbounded read in CI and in
the pre-commit hook. loadYamlFile and loadYamlFileWithPositions now go
through readRegularFile, which lstats first and refuses a link or a
non-regular file, and the scoped --files mode puts each path through
checkContainedRegularFile like validate-urls already did.

url-health.yml held a contents-write token for its whole run, through
pnpm install and thousands of requests to contributor-chosen URLs, and
pushed to main with credentials persisted. It is now two jobs on the
assign-ids pattern: a read-only check job that hands the refreshed
cache on as an artifact, and a commit job that installs nothing,
verifies the artifact is a version 1 cache touching nothing else, and
pushes that one file.

fix-urls wrote whatever a server redirected to as the entry's official
url, so a lapsed maker domain bought by a squatter would have been
promoted to the maker's page. A redirect that leaves the registrable
domain is now reported and never written, on both the cached and the
live path (the live path applied no filter at all), and the string
replacement no longer reads $-patterns out of a server-chosen target.

Walkthrough

The changes add HTTP(S)-only URL validation, prose markup checks, safer SQLite Markdown rendering, and regular-file checks for YAML and scoped validation. They also filter redirect targets and move URL-cache commits into a separate workflow job.

Changes

URL and Prose Safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
HTTP(S) URL field rules
scripts/validate.ts, scripts/generate-json-schemas.ts, schema/json/*, scripts/lib/error-codes.ts, scripts/__tests__/validate.test.ts, data/hardware/dbx-160a.yaml
Runtime validation and generated schemas restrict URL fields to HTTP(S). Tests cover unsupported and malformed URLs. The FTP resource is removed from the dbx 160A entry.
Prose markup validation and error reporting
scripts/lib/prose-markup.ts, scripts/validate.ts, scripts/lib/error-codes.ts, scripts/__tests__/validate.test.ts, docs/VALIDATION_ERRORS.md, CLAUDE.md, .changeset/safe-urls-and-prose.md
Validation detects raw HTML and unsafe prose destinations, and reports E305 or E128. Tests and documentation cover these findings.
Safe Markdown rendering
scripts/lib/prose-markup.ts, scripts/build-sqlite.ts, scripts/__tests__/build-sqlite.test.ts
The SQLite renderer escapes raw HTML and renders unsafe links and images as text. Tests cover unsafe links and supported HTTPS and mailto links.

Regular File Input Checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Regular-file reads and scoped validation
scripts/lib/utils.ts, scripts/validate.ts, scripts/__tests__/utils.test.ts, scripts/__tests__/validate.test.ts, CLAUDE.md
YAML loading rejects symlinks and non-regular files. Scoped validation uses a contained-regular-file check. Tests cover file reads, symlinks, and directories.

Redirect Target Checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Redirect filtering and replacements
scripts/fix-urls.ts, CLAUDE.md
Cached and live redirect targets are filtered before URL updates. Accepted targets are written literally, including targets containing replacement-pattern characters.

URL Cache Workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache artifact handoff and commit
.github/workflows/url-health.yml
The check job uploads an existing cache artifact. A separate write-enabled job validates the artifact and commits only the cache file.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 52f99

The changes add URL, markup, file-input, redirect, and cache-write safeguards. No merge-blocking regression is established, so the PR appears ready for normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 52f99

The change tightens unsafe-content controls and reduces write-access exposure. Remaining uncertainty concerns how published content is displayed and how automated updates recover from failure.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Contributor-controlled catalog content can affect validation and generated HTML; remote responses can influence proposed URL replacements and cache entries. Repository-write authority is now confined to the cache commit job, while issue-write authority remains in the checking job. Downstream application privileges and HTML-rendering behavior are not established by the inspected producer code.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workflow is triggered by schedule or manual dispatch, not pull-request events. Source-attributed platform documentation states that manual dispatch requires repository write access and checkout defaults to the event ref or SHA. Together with the selected-ref push, this is counterevidence to an unmerged, no-write contributor using the new job to alter default-branch cache data.
  • observed — The new writer validates cache version and the entries container, not individual observations. Downstream cache loading additionally checks entry shape and key-to-URL identity. This does not authenticate network observations, but producer-controlled cache values already existed when the producer itself held contents-write authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The writer uses an ordinary, non-forced push, so divergent concurrent updates should be rejected rather than overwritten. A rejected push can leave the refreshed cache unpublished because failure is only logged. This is a recovery limitation, not evidence of a newly enabled stale-history overwrite.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Verify encoded and entity-encoded destinations across the lexer, generated HTML, and actual application consumer. Add cases that compare the policy decision with the destination ultimately interpreted by that consumer; current evidence does not establish equivalence or a bypass.

Three findings from review, each verified against the code:

- url-health.yml carried raw U+2028 and U+2029 inside the cell encoder's
regex literal, where the other workflows spell them as escapes. A
regex literal cannot contain a LineTerminator, so the broken-URL
report step would have failed to compile. Restored the escapes and
checked that both inline scripts compile as async function bodies.
- The generated JSON schemas matched the URL scheme case-sensitively
while HttpUrlSchema reads the parsed, lowercased protocol, so an
HTTPS:// value passed validate and failed the editor schema. The
pattern now matches the scheme case-insensitively.
- findProseMarkup walked `tokens` and `items` only, and marked keeps a
table's cells under `header` and `rows`, so inline HTML or a
javascript: link inside a GFM table cell escaped E305 and E128. The
walk now visits both, with a table-cell test.
