Summary

  • scripts/validate-urls.ts gains --files <list>: one repo-relative data path per line, - reads stdin. Every listed path goes through checkContainedRegularFile against data/ before any read; a refused path (.., a symlink, outside the root) is reported on stderr and skipped. The list file itself is guarded too. --files and --changed-only are mutually exclusive.
  • The git diff --name-only call is now execFileSync("git", [...]) with an argv array, per the repo's own rule, instead of execSync with an interpolated sha.
  • The entry point moved behind a pathToFileURL main guard so the module is importable; parseArgs and resolveListedFiles are exported for the tests.
  • CLAUDE.md gets one Key Commands line.

Why

The racks import lanes call pnpm validate-urls --changed-only --base main before anything is committed, so the diff is empty and the URL check runs on zero files on every greenfield import. --files lets a lane hand over exactly the files it wrote. The racks commands switch to it in the racks PR for AUREO-1474.

Test plan

  • New scripts/__tests__/validate-urls.test.ts (7 tests): --files parsing and stdin, both flags error, --base still required, only listed files resolved, .. refused and never read, symlink refused, missing file reported. url-guard is mocked so nothing reaches the network.
  • pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, pnpm format:check, pnpm test (38 files, 768 tests) pass locally
  • CI green

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • URL validation can now be run against a specified list of files, supplied from a file or standard input. Checks for listed files apply the same URL-count and time limits as changed-file checks.
  • Documentation
    • Added instructions for running URL validation on a file list and noted that URL checks run before an import is committed.

The import lanes run `--changed-only --base main`
before anything is committed, so the diff is
empty and the URL check ran on zero files.
`--files` reads listed paths through
`checkContainedRegularFile`; the git call is an
argv array.

Walkthrough

The URL validator now accepts an explicit file list from a file or stdin. It checks listed paths, validates the selected files, and applies the URL-count and deadline budget to listed-file runs. Changed-file discovery uses the shared path resolver.

Changes

URL validation file selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
File-list input and resolution
scripts/validate-urls.ts, scripts/__tests__/validate-urls.test.ts, CLAUDE.md
The command documents and parses --files, reads a list from a file or stdin, and resolves listed paths as contained regular files. Tests cover argument rules and path handling.
Changed-file resolution
scripts/validate-urls.ts
Changed-file discovery passes Git arguments separately and uses the shared resolver for matching YAML paths.
Selected-file validation
scripts/validate-urls.ts
Validation selects listed files when provided and applies the URL-count and deadline budget to listed-file runs. Command-line execution runs only when the module is invoked as a script.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2fc9c

Some malformed commands fail late, and running the validator from a subdirectory can skip files intended for checking. These bounded issues warrant correction or explicit acceptance before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2fc9c

The change preserves existing path checks and network-request controls, and limits listed-file validation with the existing URL and deadline budgets. A narrow filesystem race remains: a concurrent workspace writer could replace a checked pathname before it is read. Exploitation requires workspace modification during execution; a static malicious path alone is insufficient.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new list-file reader validates a canonical pathname and subsequently reopens that pathname, without binding the read to the checked file identity. A process able to replace the file or an ancestor during that interval could redirect the read outside the intended workspace boundary or to a non-regular target. Static traversal and symlink checks are effective countermeasures against non-racing inputs. The existing data-file instance predates this PR; this concern is limited to the newly introduced list-file read.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attack surface is execution of the local validator with caller-selected inputs. Exploiting the retained race additionally requires concurrent workspace modification. A redirected read is bounded by the validator process's filesystem permissions; cross-tenant access, privilege escalation, or secret exfiltration is not established by this trace.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained finding covers pathname validation followed by pathname-based reading. The data-file instance already existed at the base revision. The PR adds the analogous list-file instance, but does not demonstrate that ordinary untrusted catalog contents alone can win the required replacement race.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Tests exercise rejection of static outside-root paths, symlinks, and missing listed data files. They do not directly exercise readFilesList rejection or replacement between validation and reading. Source inspection confirms the rejection branch, but does not supply runtime proof of race resistance.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If concurrent workspace writers are within the threat model, bind containment validation and reading to the same opened file identity, including ancestor-path handling, or execute against an isolated immutable workspace. This would strengthen both the new list-file reader and the pre-existing data-file reader.
