With the four-reader pool live (#110), some reader almost always holds a snapshot open. That pins the WAL, so checkpoints can't reset it, and once the WAL passes journal_size_limit the client's backpressure holds every write until the readers let go. This carries upstream pingdotgg#23496, which keeps admitting writes while an outside reader pins the WAL and resets the WAL once that reader closes.

It's merged onto upstream 0b0417a without conflicts, and its diff is identical to upstream's (git patch-id). It edits the checkpoint worker in nodeSqliteClient.ts, the same file as patch/sqlite-reader-pool, so it sits after that patch in the list.

Evidence. The PR's three tests, with nodeSqliteClient.ts reverted to 0b0417a:

AssertionError: write 39 is held by admission while an outside reader pins the WAL (41517272 bytes, journal_size_limit 33554432)
× keeps admitting writes while an outside read transaction pins the WAL (readerAfter=0)
× keeps admitting writes while an outside read transaction pins the WAL (readerAfter=38)
× resets the WAL once an outside reader that stopped TRUNCATE closes (timed out in 60000ms)
Tests 3 failed | 17 skipped (20)

With the change, all 3 pass. With patch/sqlite-reader-pool merged in too, nodeSqliteClient.test.ts, Sqlite.test.ts and DatabaseMaintenance.test.ts pass. All 12 patches merged on the newest upstream typecheck (35 of 35 tasks) and pass 786 tests across the 26 changed test files that could run. The other two are browser tests from upstream's web changes, and they need a Playwright browser that isn't installed. One earlier run timed out on the WAL-reset test under heavy machine load. 59 later runs, loaded and alone, all passed.

Review tier: 7/10; checkpoint and write admission for the server's database

Two-way door: removing the patch line drops it from the next fork build

…er pins the WAL

Reproduces issue 23482: once the WAL passes the checkpoint ceiling with an outside
read transaction open, the checkpoint worker's admission gate holds every write.

…write

Past the 10,000-frame ceiling, the checkpoint worker held writes until the WAL was
checkpointed and truncated. An outside read transaction (sqlite3, a backup) can stop
both indefinitely, so every server write waited for the reader to end.

The worker now admits writes when holding them cannot help: when a forced PASSIVE
checkpoint stops short of the frames it saw, or when TRUNCATE fails under the gate.
The ceiling becomes a pending verdict the worker clears for each generation, so
writes past it still wait for one checkpoint and truncate attempt.

…ed WAL

The pinned-reader test now also opens the reader after 38 writes, once the WAL
is fully backfilled, so the reader's snapshot stops the TRUNCATE reset rather
than the PASSIVE backfill.

…r closes

With admission open while a reader pins the WAL, neither a failed TRUNCATE
nor a pinned PASSIVE scheduled a retry, so an idle database kept its
enlarged WAL until the next write. Retry while the WAL is past the frame
ceiling or the size limit, independent of whether writes are held.

[minor] Preserve open admission while a reader pins the WAL · performance

Every commit above 10,000 WAL frames re-arms backpressure, discarding the worker's decision to admit writes while a reader pins the WAL. The next transaction waits for another forced PASSIVE checkpoint, putting worker latency and any checkpoint flush back on the write path.

When it breaks: A reader pins a WAL above 10,000 frames while successive writes or write transactions arrive.

Evidence (level 4: ran code): nodeSqliteClient.ts:1028-1030 checks after mutations; :758-762 observes the WAL; :729 sets blocked again; :679-680 and :818-855 gate the next mutation; :752 forces the worker check; :546-549 executes PASSIVE before :563-564 replies with admission open. A scratch probe importing the real module created an 11,114-frame pinned WAL and demonstrated that withholding checkpoint replies prevented the next transaction from updating its row; delivering replies allowed it to commit. The probe ran on available Node 24.22.1 with SQLite 3.53.4, not pinned Node 26.12.1, and did not measure fsync frequency. The base instead kept admission closed above the ceiling; this patch introduces repeated re-arming after reopening it.

Suggested fix: Preserve the worker's pinned-reader admission decision across subsequent writes in the same WAL cycle. Continue batched or idle checkpoint retries and retain the truncation handshake, rather than re-arming backpressure solely from the unchanged ceiling condition.

Raised by checklist-opus; verified by gpt-6.1-sol. Finding r1-4.

Verify this finding against the current code before changing anything. In packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts:729, observe() re-arms blocked after every commit above 10,000 frames, overriding the worker's pinned-reader admission decision. Preserve that decision across subsequent writes while retaining periodic checkpoint retries and safe truncation. Add focused coverage showing that successive writes can proceed without a checkpoint reply between each commit while a reader pins the WAL, and that the WAL still resets after the reader closes.

  • packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts:549 WAL growth while readers pin snapshots is the requested trade-off [minor]: nodeSqliteClient.ts:728-752 still gates writes at 10,000 frames pending a forced worker check; :547-565 deliberately releases admission when that check finds a reader pin. Cancelling the idle timer does not suppress checkpointing: every incoming check immediately calls check() at :596-618. Complete backfill requests truncation at :552-561, including during ongoing traffic. nodeSqliteClient.test.ts:425-495 explicitly requires writes exceeding both configured thresholds to succeed under a pinned snapshot. This implements the supplied request to keep writes moving when readers nearly always hold snapshots; restoring an unconditional ceiling would restore the reported stall. Additionally, this head has one serialized reader at :1092-1103, rather than the claimed four-reader pool. The base blocked admission in the same pinned state; this change intentionally removes that behavior. Evidence is from source tracing, not execution on the pinned Node version.
  • packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts:565 The 100 ms retry loop already exists on the base [minor]: At base 0b0417a, packages/shared/src/nodeSqliteClient.ts:576 sets blocked=true when TRUNCATE is busy at the frame ceiling or the WAL remains oversized; lines 590 and 533-535 then schedule another check after 100 ms. Base lines 548-557 request TRUNCATE again for the unchanged, fully backfilled WAL. Head lines 552-561 and 594 preserve that retry cycle, but lines 580-588 report blocked=false afterward. Head lines 779-795 clear truncate and blocked, allowing gated() at lines 679-680 to reopen admission. Thus the claimed repeated work predates this patch, and write blocking improves.

Tier 7/10 from claude-opus-5-5: Changes how the server's SQLite writes get admitted and when WAL checkpoints run. A mistake here could stall writes or let the WAL grow without limit, and nobody would notice right away.

Complexity high: Concurrent coordination between the checkpoint worker and the main thread. It changes the blocked and pinned states and the retry scheduling, and moves the backpressure ceiling from the gate into message handling.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF TANNER

Round 1 outcomes: r1-1 and r1-4 dismissed for the fork. Both are upstream pingdotgg#23496's own code and test, carried unchanged so the fork keeps following the PR. r1-1 (the WAL-reset test's timing-dependent priming) timed out once in about 60 runs, only under heavy load; r1-4 (backpressure re-arming per transaction) still beats the base, which held every write. Both belong in the upstream PR.
