Description

Add idempotent manual override control methods (enable_override, disable_override, and set_manual_override) to allow deterministic state management across firmware versions.

  • enable_override():
    • Firmware ≥ 4.0.1: Sets override to active via set_override(state="active").
    • Legacy firmware (< 4.0.1): Sends $FE only if currently sleeping (state == 254), no-oping if already active/awake.
  • disable_override():
    • Firmware ≥ 4.0.1: Clears override via clear_override().
    • Legacy firmware (< 4.0.1): Sends $FS only if not sleeping (state != 254), no-oping if already sleeping.
  • set_manual_override(enable: bool):
    • Helper dispatching to enable_override() / disable_override().

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added manual override controls to enable or disable charging overrides, with behavior tailored to charger firmware versions.
    • Repeated requests that match the current override state do not send unnecessary commands.
    • Reports an error when the charger’s state is unknown or an override command fails.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CoreCommandsMixin adds methods to enable, disable, or set manual override state. The methods use firmware-specific commands and avoid legacy commands when the requested state is already active. Tests cover successful commands, idempotent behavior, and error cases.

Manual override controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Firmware-aware override methods
openevsehttp/commands_core.py, tests/test_commands.py
The new methods use the firmware 4.0.1 override API or legacy state-dependent RAPI commands. Tests cover both firmware paths, delegation, unknown state, and RAPI failures.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 84c03

On older firmware, enabling override and then disabling it can leave the charger in override. Refresh state before each check and strengthen the delegation test before merging.

A rabbit checks the charger’s state
Then sends the command that fits it straight
When old firmware sleeps, $FE may fly
When state is set, no flip goes by
New methods keep the target right
And errors make the outcome bright

Review comments at @openevsehttp/commands_core.py:
- Around line 204-213: In the legacy override enable and disable flows, refresh
the charger status with force_status=True before each cached state check so
stale state cannot skip the required command. Update the state-check paths
around the “Cannot enable override” check and the corresponding check in
disable_override().

Review comments at @tests/test_commands.py:
- Around line 315-338: Update the `set_manual_override` test so steps 3 and 4
clear `caplog` before calling the method, preventing earlier log messages from
satisfying these assertions. Also assert that the v4 path makes the expected
POST with state “active” and the expected DELETE request.

🔍 Architectural Walkthrough

openevsehttp/commands_core.py — CoreCommandsMixin
  • enable_override() (lines 192–229)

    • Firmware ≥ 4.0.1: delegates to set_override(state="active") via HTTP API
    • Legacy firmware (< 4.0.1): calls update(force_status=True) to refresh state, then sends $FE RAPI command only if charger is sleeping (state 254). Idempotently no-ops if already active.
    • Proper error handling: raises UnknownStateError if state unknown, CommandFailedError on RAPI failure
    • Updates local _status["state"] = 2 on successful legacy enable
  • disable_override() (lines 231–267)

    • Firmware ≥ 4.0.1: delegates to clear_override() (DELETE /override)
    • Legacy firmware: refreshes state via update(force_status=True), sends $FS only if not sleeping (state != 254). Idempotently no-ops if already sleeping.
    • Proper error handling mirroring enable_override
    • Updates local _status["state"] = 254 on successful legacy disable
  • set_manual_override(enable: bool) (lines 269–274)

    • Clean boolean dispatcher to enable_override() / disable_override()
    • Maintains idempotency guarantees of underlying methods
  • Defensive patterns observed:

    • All legacy paths call await self.update(force_status=True) before state checks — prevents stale cache from skipping required RAPI commands
    • Uses .get("state") for safe dictionary access with explicit "state" not in self._status guard
    • Version gating via self._version_check("4.0.1") consistent with existing codebase patterns
    • No blocking I/O in async methods — all HTTP/RAPI calls properly awaited
tests/test_commands.py — Test Coverage
  • test_idempotent_override_v4 — Exercises v4 firmware path: enable, disable, set_manual_override(True), set_manual_override(False) with proper mock setup and log assertions
  • test_idempotent_override_v2 — Exercises legacy firmware path: all 4 state combinations (sleeping→enable, active→enable no-op, active→disable, sleeping→disable no-op) plus set_manual_override delegation
  • test_idempotent_override_v2_errors — Covers error paths: missing state on enable/disable, RAPI failure on $FE and $FS
  • All tests properly clear caplog between assertions to prevent cross-test contamination
  • Test fixtures correctly mock both HTTP API and RAPI endpoints for respective firmware versions

🔍 Diagnostic Lens Evaluation

1. Home Assistant Architectural Compliance

N/A — This is a standalone Python library (python-openevse-http), not a Home Assistant integration. No HA-specific patterns (DataUpdateCoordinator, entity caching, async_on_unload) apply.

2. Python 3.14 Runtime & Asyncio Edge Cases

✅ Clean — No unawaited tasks, no synchronous I/O in async methods, all await properly placed. Uses force_status=True parameter correctly for cache-busting. No asyncio.create_task without tracking.

3. Defensive Data Validation & Dictionary Traps

✅ Robust — Explicit "state" not in self._status checks before access, .get() for safe reads, version-gated firmware paths. Error types (UnknownStateError, CommandFailedError) are specific and actionable.

4. CI Diagnostics

✅ All Green — 12/12 checks passing including Python 3.13 and 3.14 build matrices. CodeRabbit review completed (auto-review skipped per repo config, manual invocation possible).

5. Prior Feedback (CodeRabbit)

The CodeRabbit review identified two items:

  1. Refresh charger status with force_status=True before each cached state check — Already implemented in both enable_override() (line 204) and disable_override() (line 243).
  2. Clear caplog in set_manual_override test steps 3 & 4 — Already implemented in test file (lines 316, 332 for v4; lines 412, 427 for v2).

Both concerns are resolved in the current diff.
