Upgrade ChunkIO to v1.5.5 and adapt Fluent Bit to its allocation model. The main gains are lower disk use for many low-volume tags and correct enforcement of storage limits after allocation growth and filtering. In the 1,000-tag benchmark, disk allocation fell 92.2% (250 → 19.53 MiB) and CPU fell 9.8%. Busy-stream throughput stayed broadly similar; the checksum workload used 2.1% more CPU. No configuration or on-disk format change is required.
Changes
Upgrade bundled ChunkIO to v1.5.5 and integrate its allocation behavior into Fluent Bit:
Enable ChunkIO's default adaptive growth: grow by half the current capacity, with the adaptive increment capped at 256 KiB and explicit larger growth steps preserved.
Honor initial capacity hints, handle deferred/reopened chunks, and retain safe allocation fallback and overflow checking. The ChunkIO update also fixes failed offset-write length restoration and checksum-disabled rollback length persistence.
Replace Fluent Bit's private cio_file layout mirror and fixed-growth prediction with cio_chunk_get_projected_size(). Budget the full projected capacity for a new chunk and the positive increase for an already-accounted chunk; keep counters based on actual allocation after writing.
Open new filesystem chunks using the known append plus file header and metadata instead of always reserving 256 KiB. A small record with a short tag can start at one 4 KiB page rather than 256 KiB.
Apply quota admission to the final filtered payload immediately before writing. With log filters configured, initially reserve only metadata so shrinking/dropping a large incoming record does not prematurely reserve its original size or evict queued data.
Preserve existing memory opening hints, chunk reuse, routing behavior, and the soft 2,048,000-byte content rollover. No configuration or on-disk format change is required.
Short pipeline benchmarks
These measurements compare the original PR head ec8e4fa66 with the Fluent Bit integration, using ChunkIO v1.5.5 in both binaries. They measure the integration's value separately from the library upgrade. The existing ChunkIO documentation contains the separate comparison against the older library.

The sparse-tag workload uses 92.2% less disk allocation and 9.8% less median CPU. Busy filesystem chunks require 1,523 remaps versus 1,105 (+37.8%) from their smaller initial reservations. The checksum-on workload uses 2.1% more CPU with 1.7% lower observed ingestion rate. CPU ranges overlap for the checksum-off and memory cases. These runs do not establish a general CPU or throughput improvement. The demonstrated value is sparse-tag allocation efficiency and correct quota admission; the new regression tests establish the latter.
Real tail-to-null pipelines; 1,000 × 64 records for sparse tags and 1,000,000 records for each busy/memory case; 256 source bytes per record. Medians of three measured repetitions after one excluded warmup per version/case, with alternating version order. Linux x86-64, Ryzen 9 7940HS, ext4/NVMe, 4 KiB pages, GCC 13.3, optimized builds, CPU affinity 2. All 32 runs verified exact input/output counts and zero dropped records or exhausted retries.
CPU includes process startup/shutdown. Ingestion rate excludes startup and final drain. Disk figures are sampled allocation peaks. The host was not isolated; these short catch-up runs do not establish sustained throughput or cross-platform performance. Raw samples, CPU ranges, hashes, and reproduction commands are in benchmarks/chunk_allocation/README.md.
Validation
Runtime/internal tests configured with -DFLB_TESTS_RUNTIME=On -DFLB_TESTS_INTERNAL=On; full build succeeded.
Same integration command prefixed with VALGRIND=1 VALGRIND_STRICT=1 — 30 passed, 2 intentionally skipped. SIGKILL prevents those two crash cases from producing a final memory-checker summary; both passed normally. Strict Valgrind reported no memory errors or leaks.
All seven new allocation/quota regressions fail against the original PR binary and pass with the integration. They cover initial sizing, filter expansion/shrinking/dropping, and adaptive growth admission for a reused, already-accounted chunk. Existing coverage checks fan-out, down chunks, trace replay/corruption, backlog eviction, and hot reload.
Full PR commit range passes .github/scripts/commit_prefix_check.py against master.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added adaptive chunk capacity growth, with an option to retain fixed-size growth.
Added capacity estimates for future writes without modifying the chunk.
Filesystem chunks can now size their initial allocation based on pending data.
Bug Fixes
Improved recovery of valid chunk data when checksum information is incomplete or damaged.
Improved handling of allocation and mapping failures to help preserve existing data.
Strengthened validation of writes, file sizes, memory allocations, and storage-quota checks.
Improved build compatibility on Windows and Emscripten.
Documentation
Added guidance on allocation behavior, benchmarks, and benchmark results.
ChunkIO adds adaptive capacity growth, a projected-size API, and filesystem checksum recovery. Fluent Bit uses append estimates and projected capacity for filesystem chunk allocation and placement. The pull request adds tests, platform adjustments, and benchmark tooling with recorded results.
ChunkIO adds adaptive growth as the default and CIO_FIXED_GROWTH as an opt-out. The new cio_chunk_get_projected_size API calculates an upper-bound capacity. Filesystem and memory allocation paths use shared size helpers, with overflow checks and allocation-failure handling. Tests cover growth policies, projected capacity, allocation hints, and failure cases.
Filesystem headers now use canonical checksum fields and include shadow recovery data. Format validation handles unfinalized checksums, shadow tuples, and legacy wide checksums. Tests cover recovery, corruption, legacy layouts, and read-only opens.
Chunk writes validate offsets, access mode, and buffers, and restore saved state when delegated writes fail. Rollback and metadata paths update file state and checksums. Tests cover metadata updates, synchronization, trimming, rollback, and reload behavior.
Fluent Bit allocation integration include/fluent-bit/flb_input_chunk.h, src/flb_input_chunk.c, tests/integration/scenarios/storage/tests/test_chunk_allocation.py
Filesystem chunks use append-size estimates for initial capacity. After filtering, raw append checks projected capacity and releases storage if required. Integration tests check allocation bounds, filter outcomes, quota eviction, and adaptive growth.
Platform guards and Windows library and header handling change. Unix and Emscripten mapping paths adjust how mappings are replaced. The ChunkIO patch version changes from 4 to 5.

Update storage-limit projection before enabling adaptive growth
With filesystem buffering and storage.total_limit_size configured, this upgrade enables adaptive growth while flb_input_chunk_get_projected_write_size() in src/flb_input_chunk.c:1061–1081 still predicts fixed realloc_size increments. src/flb_storage.c does not set CIO_FIXED_GROWTH. For example, growing a 512 KiB allocation by a small append can now reserve another 256 KiB while admission budgets only the default 32 KiB increment. Consequently, flb_input_chunk_place_new_chunk() can admit writes that exceed an output's configured storage limit without releasing sufficient queued data. Update the consumer to use cio_chunk_get_projected_size(), or set CIO_FIXED_GROWTH until that integration is complete.

The caller-allocation bench.c rejects -DNDEBUG with #error. This file has no such guard.
If someone builds this file with -DNDEBUG, no directory is created and no writes happen. The program still prints timings, so the result is silently wrong. Add the same guard.

The Windows handler already had this behavior for MSVC. This PR makes it reachable in native MinGW builds, where the previous fts.h path was not buildable. The handler recurses into directory reparse points without checking FILE_ATTRIBUTE_REPARSE_POINT. A junction or directory symlink can therefore cause deletion outside the requested tree.
Remove reparse points as entries instead of traversing them.
