Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Light-mode xlsx/xlsm extraction now uses a new direct parsing path. No concrete defects were found, and unsupported cases fall back to the previous pipeline. Output parity on real-world workbooks beyond the tested fixtures remains worth watching after merge. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to The inspected paths preserve data-only extraction, resource cleanup and complete restart after propagated failures. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but protection parity for hostile workbooks has not been fully verified. Retained concerns Security review detailsSecurity Blast Radius

🔴 Merged sheets stall table detection
On a densely scanned sheet with many merges, _merge_at tests every merge for each cell. A 1,000,000-cell scan with 500 merges can require 500 million containment checks before table candidates return.
Learn more
Light extraction builds a worksheet view and passes it to detect_tables_openpyxl_ws. Its border scanner reads every cell in the selected rectangle via load_border_maps_openpyxl_ws, up to the configured 5,000-row and 200-column limits. Each read currently searches all merged ranges, even if no merge covers that coordinate. This makes the direct path's work proportional to scanned cells times merged ranges; reading candidate values repeats the search.
Example: A sheet with 500 merges and populated or bordered cells throughout 5,000 rows and 200 columns scans one million cells. The merge lookup alone can test up to 500 million ranges, instead of making roughly one lookup per cell.
Recommended fix: Index merged ranges by relevant row or column intervals when constructing _OoxmlWorksheetView, then use that index in _merge_at. Preserve the existing anchor and inherited-border behavior and add a dense-sheet/many-merges regression or bounded-work test.

- Around line 295-304: Update the merge lookup used by `_merge_at` to avoid
scanning every entry in `_merges` for each coordinate. Build an index once
during initialization—preferably row-bucketed column intervals to avoid
expanding large merges—and have `_merge_at` use that index while preserving the
current first-match behavior for overlaps.
