Owner

Summary

The owner affirms the state of main at anchor 085e513599a93b5b6bf45cf8fdb40f2318923dcf. This replaces the agent-authored DRAFT that #70 marked as not owner-affirmed. The commit is the owner's own SSH-signed commit, and its parent is the anchor.

Land this by fast-forwarding main to eb3611a, not by squash. A squash would put GitHub's web-flow signature on main in place of the owner's, and the standards affirmation-check reads that as E and fails it. Auto-merge is deliberately not armed, because it would squash. When main reaches this head, GitHub marks the PR merged.

The head was amended once. The PR opened on 291ce32. CodeRabbit's review of that commit found two places where the signed text could not be checked from what it said. The owner re-signed the corrected file as eb3611a, and the parent is unchanged.

Changes

  • docs/AFFIRMATION.adoc: re-affirmed at 085e513. The DRAFT lines are gone. Every claim was re-run on 2026-10-08 between 17:50:17Z and 17:58:24Z, and the exit codes were re-checked at 18:34:42Z.
    • From the review: the negative control now names its input as "$T/bad.affine" in a scratch directory outside the repo, and the Reproduce block creates that file.
    • From the review: each rc=124 is now identified as the affinescript CLI's own error exit, not a timeout kill.
  • docs/affirmations/AFFIRMATION-2026-10-07.adoc: the previous draft, archived verbatim as the AFFIRMATION standard requires.

📌 New pins

  • Head SHA: eb3611ad619d170c86df5a5ed3bcca1dd627e88f (it replaces 291ce32). Its parent is the anchor 085e513599a93b5b6bf45cf8fdb40f2318923dcf.
  • No action, lockfile or container pins are added or changed. Only the two .adoc files above are touched.

Checks on the head eb3611a

Read 2026-10-08 from the check-runs (--paginate) and statuses endpoints:

  • Required (the only required context): scan / gitleaks: success.
  • Other passing checks: analyze (actions, none), CodeFactor, CodeQL, GitGuardian Security Checks, Hypatia, Hypatia Neurosymbolic Analysis, scan / rust-secrets, scan / shell-secrets, SonarCloud Code Analysis (Quality Gate passed), Codeac (status), CodeRabbit (status).
  • semgrep-cloud-platform/scan: success.
  • Skipped: governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline, skipped on the base too.
  • Red: governance / Check Workflow Staleness. It also fails on the base 085e513. It is not required, and it is deferred here:

This PR changes two .adoc files and no workflow, manifest or code. The Hypatia bot comment reports 75 findings for the repository. The 10 it lists are all in .github/workflows/ files, and none is in docs/.

main also requires signed commits. The head eb3611a reads VALID on GitHub (signer hyperpolymath), so a fast-forward satisfies that rule.

No workflow in this repo merges a PR or arms auto-merge: none of the 10 files under .github/workflows/ matches auto-merge, automerge or a merge call. Auto-merge is not armed on this PR either, so nothing will squash away the owner's signature.

Review

CodeRabbit's review of 291ce32 raised two inline findings and one remark. All three are answered:

  • Relative bad.affine path, never created in Reproduce: fixed in eb3611a. Thread resolved.
  • SPDX should be PMPL-1.0-or-later: not changed, and CodeRabbit withdrew the finding. The AFFIRMATION standard requires CC-BY-SA-4.0 on line 1, and the archive must stay verbatim. The conflicting line in .github/copilot-instructions.md is logged for the owner. Thread resolved.
  • "rc=124 cannot be classified as a completed rejection": answered in a PR comment. No timeout wrapper was used. The CLI exits 124 for the planted error and for an unknown flag, and 0 for the good file. The text now says so.

RSR Quality Checklist

Required

  • Tests pass: the AFFIRMATION records the test runs made at the anchor, including the ones that fail (see its "Outstanding" section). This PR changes no code, so nothing new needed testing.
  • Code is formatted: not applicable, no code changed.
  • Linter is clean: not applicable, no code changed.
  • No banned language patterns: the diff is AsciiDoc only.
  • No unsafe blocks without // SAFETY:: none, no code.
  • No banned functions: none, no code. The AFFIRMATION mentions sorry, Admitted and unsafeCoerce only as text, when it explains the aspect-test false positive.
  • SPDX headers: both files begin with // SPDX-License-Identifier: CC-BY-SA-4.0, as the AFFIRMATION standard requires.
  • No secrets, credentials or .env files: scan / gitleaks passed on eb3611a.

As Applicable

  • .machine_readable/*.a2ml: not applicable. A2ML is retired (D99, D269c) and this PR changes no project state.
  • Documentation updated: this PR is documentation.
  • TOPOLOGY.md: not applicable, no architecture change.
  • CHANGELOG: not applicable, no release.
  • New dependencies: none.
  • ABI/FFI: not applicable, no change.

Testing

  • git log -1 --format='%G? %P' eb3611a → G 085e513599a93b5b6bf45cf8fdb40f2318923dcf: an owner SSH signature, and the parent is the anchor. GitHub reads the same commit as VALID.
  • The standards .github/actions/affirmation-check/check.sh, run locally in this worktree at eb3611a, exited 0 with "Affirmation commit signature verified with a trusted key … snapshot age: 0 days … validation passed". This repo has no affirmation-check workflow, so CI does not re-run it.
  • git diff --stat 085e513..eb3611a: 2 files, both .adoc. bin/, examples/ and tests/ are identical to the anchor (git diff --quiet rc=0).
  • The new Reproduce lines were run literally at the head. They print "Resolution error" with rc=124. asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN renders the file with rc=0.
  • Live ls-remote at 2026-10-08T18:39:53Z: jaffascript main is still 085e513, so the anchor holds.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/AFFIRMATION.adoc: The document date advances from 2026-10-07 to 2026-10-08, and the draft status notice is removed. The text now points to the previous unaffirmed draft’s archive location.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/AFFIRMATION.adoc: The table entry for this file is reflowed. The note now says the previous unverified draft is archived at docs/affirmations/AFFIRMATION-2026-10-07.adoc.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/AFFIRMATION.adoc: The statement now excludes claims copied from a previous affirmation, in addition to claims copied from memory or a status document.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/AFFIRMATION.adoc: The anchor commit, permalink and verification timestamp are updated. Verification now records the run interval and individual check times, specifies a fresh worktree at origin/main with a clean status before and after runs, and adds the local compiler’s path and build timestamp. The compiler checkout remains identified as having 35 uncommitted files, with the binary’s included changes stated as unknowable.

I, a rabbit, read the dated page,
Then tucked the old draft safe away.
New checks and commands now sit in line,
With anchor details clear and fine.

155-155: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The documented command is present, but the status source is not. bin/jaffa has no timeout wrapper and delegates the command with exec to the external affinescript binary. The record does not show whether that command ran directly or under an external timeout, so rc=124 cannot be classified as a completed rejection.

@coderabbitai On the review remark that "rc=124 cannot be classified as a completed rejection": rc=124 is not a timeout kill here.

  • The original runs used no timeout wrapper. Each command ran as "$@" > out 2>&1; echo "rc=$?".
  • Re-run at 2026-10-08T18:34:42Z, again with no wrapper: the planted control prints "Resolution error: Cannot find name 'undefinedThing'." and exits 124. The good file exits 0. affinescript --no-such-flag also exits 124.
  • In the affinescript source, bin/main.ml returns `Error (false, "Resolution error") for this case, and the CLI maps that to exit status 124.

Your point that the record left this ambiguous is fair. eb3611a (owner re-signed) now says at each rc=124 that it is the CLI's own error exit. It adds a note in "The nuance you must not lose", and the Reproduce block now creates the control file.

@hyperpolymath Thanks for the clarification. My statement that rc=124 cannot represent a completed rejection was incorrect. Exit status 124 alone does not establish a timeout. Your reported diagnostic and wrapper-free runs support the negative-control claim.

I checked docs/AFFIRMATION.adoc at eb3611a:

  • Line 177 explicitly identifies 124 as the CLI’s own error exit and states that no timeout wrapper was used.
  • Line 199 identifies the eval result as a CLI error exit.
  • Line 232 onwards creates and checks the planted control.

The updated text removes the ambiguity. I withdraw the original finding.

Learning: In hyperpolymath/jaffascript, docs/AFFIRMATION.adoc records that the measured local AffineScript 0.1.1 CLI exits 124 for the planted unresolved-name control and an unknown flag. The owner confirms that these runs used no timeout wrapper. Do not interpret rc=124 alone as evidence of a timeout; use the command invocation and diagnostic to distinguish a CLI error exit from a timeout.

hyperpolymath dismissed coderabbitai[bot]’s stale review October 8, 2026 18:42

Both findings on 291ce32 are answered, and both threads are resolved. The relative bad.affine path is fixed in eb3611a, which the owner re-signed. The SPDX finding was withdrawn by CodeRabbit: the AFFIRMATION standard requires CC-BY-SA-4.0, and the archive must stay verbatim. The rc=124 remark is answered in issuecomment-6066640536 and clarified in the text at eb3611a.
