Summary

Harden the interactive shell so a failed command cannot leak into the next one, and give host-key and capacity failures their own error codes. This is the behavior for the next minor release; the version bump stays on the release branch.

Upgrade

Callers that branch on error codes need a small update:

  • A rejected host key is hostkey (previously connect).
  • Output over maxOutputBytes and a pager over maxPages are limit (the pager cap was previously timeout).
  • exec rejects C0 controls, DEL, and tabs before connect. promptRegex matches the whole line; flags g, y, and m are ignored.
  • disconnect() no longer writes exit. It waits for the client close event or 1s.
  • idleBufferMaxBytes is accepted and ignored. Idle bytes are discarded.
  • hostFingerprint must be SHA-256 base64 or 64 hex digits. term must be 1–32 letters, digits, or hyphens.

Scope

  • Shell recovery waits for resync (Ctrl-C, or q when a pager marker is still the tail) before the next command, and sends Ctrl-U plus CR once when the recovered line is not the prompt.
  • SshClientError codes hostkey and limit, optional cause, and ECMAScript private fields so the password is hidden from util.inspect and JSON.stringify.
  • Whole-line promptRegex, CR overwrite, ANSI stripping, bounded prompt scans, discarded idle bytes, SHA-256 fingerprint and term checks, shared-connect abort per caller, and disconnect that waits for close instead of writing exit.
  • Docs: changelog, README highlights, usage guide, and security notes. package.json stays at 1.1.0 until release/1.2.0.
  • Out of scope: splitting ShellIo, injecting the session, completing apply() for open-shell, SFTP, public-key auth, keepalive, and algorithm allowlists.

Acceptance criteria / DoD

  • The next exec awaits an in-flight resync instead of cancelling it.
  • Host-key rejection is hostkey. Output and pager caps are limit.
  • Commands with C0, DEL, or tab are rejected before connect.
  • Password is absent from util.inspect (including showHidden) and JSON.stringify.
  • npm run ci and npm run test:e2e pass on Node 24.21.0.

Test plan

  • npm run ci on Node 24.21.0: audit clean, lint, test types, 189 unit tests, coverage aggregate statements 96.01 / branches 93.18 / functions 98.15 / lines 95.99, per-file floor 85%, build, consumer smoke.
  • npm run test:e2e on Node 24.21.0: 28 Docker Ubuntu sshd tests, including pager cap (limit), output cap, carriage return, and bad host key (hostkey).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added prompt-length limits and clearer error categories for host-key mismatches and output or pager limits.
    • Passwords are excluded from client inspection and JSON serialization.
  • Behavior Changes
    • Commands containing control characters or only whitespace are rejected.
    • Prompt detection, terminal output cleanup, and pager handling are more precise.
    • Aborts, timeouts, and disconnects now coordinate more reliably with active connections and commands.
    • Idle output is discarded; the idle-buffer option is accepted but no longer affects behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Updated usage and security guidance for fingerprints, command validation, output limits, and connection behavior.

A timed-out or aborted command finishes resync before the next exec
writes. Host-key rejection and output or pager caps use their own error
codes. Prompts match a whole line, CR overwrites, and idle bytes are dropped.
Record hostkey and limit, whole-line prompts, resync, and the ignored
idle buffer in the changelog, README, usage guide, and security notes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The SSH client now validates commands and fingerprints, classifies host-key and output-limit errors, confirms prompt identity, and processes terminal output and pager markers. Connection aborts are tracked per caller, disconnect waits for client shutdown, and command timeout or abort starts shell resynchronization.

Changes

SSH client behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Options, fingerprints, and error contracts
src/errors.ts, src/host-key.ts, src/options.ts, src/prompt.ts, src/public-types.ts, tests/host-key.test.ts, tests/options*.test.ts, README.md, SECURITY.md, docs/usage.md, CHANGELOG.md
Adds hostkey and limit errors, fingerprint parsing, command validation, and maxPromptLength. The options and documentation also specify terminal-name and prompt-regex behavior.
Connection, execution, and disconnect lifecycle
src/attempt-plan.ts, src/client.ts, src/session.ts, tests/attempt-plan.test.ts, tests/client*.test.ts, tests/session*.test.ts, e2e/client.e2e.test.ts, docs/usage.md, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
Connection attempts classify host-key rejection and support separate abort handling for callers sharing an attempt. Queued execution validates abort and disconnect state. Disconnect waits for client closure or the timeout.
Prompt, terminal output, and pager processing
src/output-accumulator.ts, src/pager.ts, src/shell-io.ts, tests/output-accumulator.test.ts, tests/pager.test.ts, tests/shell-contract.test.ts, tests/shell-io.test.ts, tests/support/fake-ssh2.ts, e2e/client.e2e.test.ts, docs/usage.md, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
Output processing handles ANSI sequences, carriage-return overwrites, prompt identity, wrapped command echoes, and pager markers at the output tail. Prompt-length and output caps use the documented limits.
Timeout and abort resynchronization
src/shell-io.ts, tests/shell-io-extras.test.ts, tests/client-barrier.test.ts, tests/support/fake-ssh2.ts, docs/usage.md
Resynchronization is serialized and uses pager quit or interrupt input, with a kill-line attempt for dirty output. Failed recovery closes the shell; subsequent commands wait for recovery or reject.

136-141: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Do not create an ssh2 client for an already-aborted caller.

On this path, createAttempt() calls #clientFactory() and then teardown() ends that client. The client never connects. Each already-aborted connect() still builds a real Client and schedules a 1s close timer, which does no useful work. Reject before you create the attempt. The comment says the attempt "still has to be ended", but that statement holds only because the code created the attempt first.

Compare the last display line after carriage-return overwrite before
removing the prompt. A command aborted while resync is still running
is rejected before it is written.

The already-aborted connect() path still creates the client and ends it without calling connect(). tests/session-races.test.ts locks connectConfig === null and ended === true, so a factory-created client is not left open. The close wait is not awaited on this path. Skipping that allocation is a later cleanup, not part of this fix.
