Node-label source and profile selection cmd/main.go, pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/containerprofilecache.go, pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/host_binding_test.go, docs/features/host-profile-binding.md |
The application configures a Node-label source when host monitoring is enabled. The cache uses the label to select an authored profile and assigns a synthetic name when the host container has no runtime name. Tests and documentation cover selection and lookup behavior. |
Binding refresh and retry pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/containerprofilecache.go, pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/reconciler.go, pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/host_binding_test.go |
The reconciler rereads the host label and handles changed or unavailable bindings. Host retry metadata is retained for pending or rebuilt entries. Tests cover rebinding, removal, storage failures, and unresolved profiles. |
Host-network profile observations pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/event_reporting.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/host_network_test.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/host_profile_content_test.go, tests/chart/templates/node-agent/default-rules.yaml, docs/features/host-profile-binding.md |
Network-event validation permits host-network traffic for the host container and continues to reject it for other containers. Tests cover reported and stored events. Five chart rules gain the context:host tag. |
Projection Cache Invalidation
| Layer / File(s) | Summary |
|---|---|
Projection generations and CEL cache tokens pkg/objectcache/projection_types.go, pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/projection_apply.go, pkg/rulemanager/cel/libraries/cache/function_cache.go, pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/projection_generation_test.go, pkg/rulemanager/cel/libraries/cache/profile_generation_test.go |
Each projection receives a process-local generation value. The CEL cache uses that value as its profile token when present and retains the existing hash fallback otherwise. Tests cover concurrent generation uniqueness and CEL helper reevaluation after profile changes. |
Rule Failure Process Attribution
| Layer / File(s) | Summary |
|---|---|
Failed process-tree refresh pkg/processtree/process_tree_manager.go, pkg/processtree/process_tree_manager_test.go |
A failed container-subtree refresh removes the corresponding cached branch. A test checks that a later cached lookup does not return the earlier branch. |
Validate event process attribution pkg/rulemanager/ruleadapters/creator.go, pkg/rulemanager/ruleadapters/creator_attribution_test.go, pkg/rulemanager/ruleadapters/creator_network_test.go |
Rule-failure creation attaches process-tree details only when the tree contains the event PID and, except for syscall events, the command matches. Tests cover matching and mismatching process details. |

Explanation
The title "feat(host): complete profile binding and anomaly coverage" matches the main thrust of the changeset. The PR reads the user-defined-profile label from the agent's Node, binds or removes authored profiles, keeps the last binding on failures, and adds host-network observation handling. It also adds the context:host tags and tightens alert process attribution. The title names the host profile binding work. It does not name the process attribution fix, the CEL cache invalidation, or the process-tree cache fix, which are secondary but real parts of the change. The title is specific and uses a conventional commit prefix.

What changed in this PR
This PR extends existing host monitoring with Node-selected authored baselines, host network learning, and safer alert process attribution while preserving current identity and configuration contracts.
Changes:
- Adds Node-label profile binding, refresh, fallback, and retry handling.
- Admits synthetic-host network observations and enables five anomaly rules for host context in the test chart.
- Validates enriched process trees against the triggering event and adds regression coverage and usage documentation.

Hey @matthyx, I was poking at this with the manager's branch cache and hit one case the comm check doesn't catch. If a PID gets recycled within the 1 min cache TTL and the new process's parent isn't in the tree yet, the useCache=false refresh fails and the old cached branch just stays there ( node-agent/pkg/processtree/process_tree_manager.go Lines 93 to 95 in c7a77c1 Repro on 4f207ac with the real manager in k8s mode: exec pid X as To be fair it's pretty narrow, you need PID reuse inside a minute, which is unlikely with pid_max at 4194304. Same-PID exec without an exit works fine. Dropping the cache entry when the lookup fails would fix it, it's like 3 lines. Want me to send that as a separate PR with the test? |
|
@DeathGun44 yes you can open a PR on my branch, thanks! |
|
Done, opened #1047 against your branch. It drops the cache entry when the refresh fails, with a test for the same-comm case. Thanks! |
A failed refresh left the previous entry in the tree cache, so a later cached read for a recycled pid returned the dead process's branch. Signed-off-by: DeathGun44 <krishnamewara841@gmail.com>

Host profiles already learn exec/file/syscall/capability activity, but Kubernetes Nodes cannot select an authored baseline, host-network observations are rejected, and the test chart excludes the main profile anomaly rules from host context. Alert enrichment can also replace the triggering process with an unrelated cached process tree.
This completes those gaps using the existing upstream host identity and configuration:
kubescape.io/user-defined-profilefrom the agent's own Node at registration and refresh. Bind, replace and remove authored profiles in the agent namespace; preserve the last binding on Node/storage failures and retry when a baseline is not yet available.context:hostto test-chart R0001/R0002/R0003/R0004/R0040.Derived from the remaining behavior in entlein/node-agent #124, after accounting for upstream #976 and #1031. Existing learning, alert metadata and required-profile gating are reused.
Compatibility decisions
Profile names, synthetic host identity and WLIDs remain compatible with existing stored baselines. A move to Node identity and actual cluster WLIDs needs a coordinated storage/consumer migration and node-replacement policy, rather than renaming the builder's output in place.
The existing
hostMonitoringEnabledandapplicationProfileServiceEnabledflags continue to control host learning. Keep these existing switches; this PR does not introducehostProfileServiceEnabled.Documented configuration prerequisites and Node binding usage in
