fix(continuousscanning): delete the records a deleted object really has - #443
Conversation
The cleaner deleted names.ResourceToSlug(object) in the object's namespace, with the empty namespace for cluster-scoped objects, and stopped at the first error. The scanner stores cluster-scoped records in the kubescape namespace and RBAC results there under a name built from the subject, the role and the binding, so a deleted RoleBinding, Role, ClusterRole, ClusterRoleBinding, ServiceAccount or Node kept its records for good, and every non-workload deletion logged an error on a vulnerability summary it never had. The records named after the object are now deleted where the scanner put them, the RBAC records are found through the labels the scanner writes and deleted with them, a missing record is not an error, and every delete is attempted before the first other error is returned. The RBAC branch listed the summaries and deleted the scan of each, so a scan whose summary was already gone, or whose delete had failed once its summary was removed, could not be found again. Scans and summaries are now listed separately by the same labels and each list is deleted on its own. Signed-off-by: Youssef Omar Bouden <youssef.bouden2002@gmail.com>

Request changes on b6265f2 against main at 7a44436.
The fix is needed: main uses an empty namespace for cluster-scoped records and object-only slugs for RBAC triplets, contrary to the scanner's storage namespace/naming. Independent scan/summary discovery also resolves the earlier partial-delete review concern. One high-severity blocker remains: sanitized labels are not unique identities, so deleting one resource can remove another live resource's posture records (inline).
History: #442 documents this exact failure; kubescape/storage#432 describes the complementary periodic-cleanup gap. #290 changed continuous scanning but did not fix these storage lookups. #140/#193 disabled different vulnerability-document watcher cleanup; this PR does not restore it. Closed #180 was explicitly declined because VEX deletion belonged in storage, not because all operator deletion cleanup was forbidden. None supersedes this targeted posture fix. Searches across open/closed/merged PRs and issues used continuous, cleanup, delete, RBAC, deletedCleanerHandler, deleteScanArtifacts, orphan, posture, and storage/records (50–100 results/query); this is bounded keyword evidence, not proof of absence.
Validation: reviewed both changed files, producer label/namespace behavior, pinned label sanitizer and storage client, and existing review replies. Diff whitespace/gofmt checks passed. A deterministic selector reproduction matched both distinct 64-character ServiceAccount names. This models the sanitizer/selector, not an execution of the Go handler. Attempted go test -race ./continuousscanning/ in a credential-free container; dependency setup failed with no space left on device before compilation. No before/after Go regression run completed. The reviewed commit's GitHub build, Basic-Test, integration-build, CodeQL and other reported checks are green. Existing tests cover ordinary deletion, missing records and partial deletes but not colliding identities.
Please preserve exact identity when deleting candidates and add a collision regression for scans and summaries. No source changes or merge performed.

[HIGH] Verify exact identity before deleting label matches
Two valid ServiceAccounts in namespace team, named strings.Repeat("a", 63)+"x" and strings.Repeat("a", 63)+"y", can have distinct RBAC triplet records through different bindings. The pinned names.ToValidLabelValue truncates both names to the same 63-character label. Deleting the first account therefore selects both sets of records here; this loop and the summary loop delete the still-live second account's posture results too. RBAC names such as reader:app and reader-app also collide under sanitization.
Use these labels only for candidate discovery, then verify lossless kind/name/namespace identity before deletion (including summary-only records). Add a regression with two colliding valid names that proves only the deleted object's scans and summaries disappear.

Thanks for the two 64-character accounts, the labels really are only a net.
Fixed in 4f4bbda. The labels now only find candidates, and each record is deleted only when it states the deleted object exactly: a binding through the wlid annotation the scanner writes on both records, a role through a scan's related objects, and otherwise through the record's name, which is the slug the scanner derives from subject, role and binding, recomputed with the deleted object in its slot and the other two as the record states them (the binding from its wlid, the role from the related objects or the labels, the subject from the labels). A summary of a deleted role whose subject's name the labels had to cut cannot be told from a live subject's and stays; the subject's own deletion removes it, since that one states the subject exactly.
TestDeletedCleanerKeepsTheRecordsOfAnObjectWhoseLabelsCollide is your case for every kind the selector handles (ServiceAccount, Role, RoleBinding, ClusterRole, ClusterRoleBinding): two objects whose names differ past the 63rd character, with their scans and summaries, and again with the scans gone; only the deleted one's records disappear. On b6265f2 all ten cases fail, with both objects' records gone. TestDeletedCleanerLeavesASummaryItCannotTellApartToTheSubjectsDeletion pins the one case that stays. The fixtures are now built with names.RoleBindingResourceToSlug, names.SanitizeLabelValues, the binding's wlid and the related objects, so they are named and labelled the way the scanner does it rather than by hand. go test -race ./continuousscanning/ passes.

Re-reviewed 4f4bbda against unchanged main 7a44436. Request changes remains warranted.
The added identity checks and truncation-collision tests address the original 64-character example, but the remaining HIGH defect is already described in the existing review thread; no duplicate inline comment added.
Concrete case: delete Role team/reader:app (bound to app-a through bind-a), while live Role team/reader-app is bound to app-b through bind-b. These have distinct stored triplet names but the same sanitized role label. For the live record, the exact role comparison fails, then handlers.go:248 overwrites that exact identity with the deleted role. The short slug sanitizes ':' to '-' and still equals the live record name, allowing both scan and summary deletion. Summaries lack related objects, so guarding only exact mismatches is insufficient: ambiguous slug equality must also fail closed. Add punctuation-collision coverage for full and summary-only records.
Validation: both independent review lanes confirmed the defect; fresh diff whitespace and gofmt checks passed. A network-disabled, credential-free Go harness using the pinned sanitizer/slug function bodies reproduced identical live/reconstructed slugs. This was a focused helper reproduction, not the complete handler test suite. Full package/race tests were not rerun locally after the previous dependency-setup ENOSPC failure; current head's reported GitHub checks, including Basic-Test and cross-platform build, are green. The new tests cover truncation, not punctuation collisions. The acknowledged long-subject summary retention also remains a cleanup limitation.
Original necessity/history assessment still applies (#442, storage#432, and the different scope of #140/#193/#180); refreshed bounded symbol/RBAC PR search found no superseding fix. No source changes or merge performed.

Re-reviewed latest head 32d7089 against main 7a44436. Verdict: request changes for one remaining HIGH defect (inline).
The prior role/binding punctuation-collision finding is addressed: those kinds now use exact WLID/related-object comparisons, and summaries use the listed scan's related objects. The new tests cover those earlier cases. Old changes-requested reviews are not the reason for this verdict.
The remaining case combines ServiceAccount deletion, a truncated role label, and a summary whose scan is absent. Reconstructing the slug can shift a '-role-' segment from the role into the subject while keeping the same string, deleting a live account's summary. Both independent review lanes confirmed the scenario.
Validation: go test -race ./continuousscanning/ PASSED on the reviewed source in a credential-free, capability-dropped container (Go 1.27.1). Fresh whitespace/gofmt checks passed. A separate network-disabled Go harness using pinned sanitizer/slug function bodies confirmed the 230-character collision; this helper reproduction is not a full-handler regression test. The existing suite lacks this combined case. Current reported GitHub checks are green.
The fix's necessity and prior-history assessment remain unchanged: #442 is the direct issue, kubescape/storage#432 is complementary, #290 did not fix these lookups, #140/#193 cover different vulnerability watcher cleanup, and closed #180 assigned VEX deletion to storage. A refreshed bounded posture PR search (50 results, all states) found no superseding fix; keyword searches are not exhaustive. Safe retention of role summaries without scans is documented and is separate from the unintended deletion reported here. No source changes or merge performed.

[HIGH] A truncated role can make another ServiceAccount's summary match
For a summary without its scan, this reconstructs the role from a lossy label. Let A = strings.Repeat("a", 63) and B = strings.Repeat("b", 63). In namespace team, keep a live triplet with ServiceAccount A, Role B+"-role-"+B, and binding x. Delete a different ServiceAccount A+"-role-"+B (which can have its own distinct binding).
Both subject labels are A, so the live summary is selected. Its role label is only B. Reconstruction with the deleted subject and truncated role equals the live summary's name: serviceaccount-A-role-B-role-B-rolebinding-x. The expanded name is 230 characters, below the hash threshold, so this returns true and the live summary is deleted at line 319.
Require lossless component identities before deriving subject ownership, or retain ambiguous summaries. Add a regression combining a truncated role with a missing scan; the current truncation tests use short role names for ServiceAccount deletion.

Thanks for the -role- shift; the role label was the lossy part I had still trusted for subjects.
Fixed in 54c5ec3. A subject is now matched only through the related objects of the record's scan, which state the role and the binding in full; the slug is recomputed with the deleted subject and those two and nothing read from a label, so the subject's part of the name is its own name unchanged. A summary whose scan is gone states nothing but its binding in full and is left to that binding's deletion, like a role's. The namespace label is checked as well, since the slug does not carry it.
Your case is the new "ServiceAccount completing a cut role" row of TestDeletedCleanerKeepsTheRecordsOfAnObjectWhoseLabelsCollide: live a...a bound to b...b-role-b...b through x, deleted a...a-role-b...b with its own record through y, with full records and with the scans gone. On 32d7089 the variant with the scans gone fails with the live summary deleted, as you described; the full-records variant already held because the live scan's related objects named the whole role. TestDeletedCleanerLeavesASummaryWithoutItsScanToItsBinding pins that a role's and a subject's deletion leave such a summary and the binding's removes it. Package green under -race.

Approved after re-review of 54c5ec3 against main 7a44436. No material blockers remain.
All previously reported identity-collision defects are addressed. Role/binding matching uses exact related-object/WLID identity; ServiceAccount matching requires the scan's full role and binding metadata and namespace equality, removing the truncated-label fallback. The added 'ServiceAccount completing a cut role' regression covers the last counterexample. Both independent review lanes returned approval / architecture CLEAR.
The fix remains needed: main uses the wrong namespace for cluster-scoped records, cannot find RBAC triplet names, and stops cleanup on missing artifacts. #442 documents the direct failure and kubescape/storage#432 the complementary periodic-cleanup gap. Prior-history review found no superseding fix: #290 did not correct these lookups, #140/#193 address different vulnerability-document watcher cleanup, and closed #180 assigned VEX deletion to storage rather than rejecting posture cleanup. Refreshed all-state continuousscanning/deleted-posture searches (100/50 result caps), alongside the earlier deletion/symbol/RBAC searches, found no replacement; these bounded searches are not exhaustive.
Validation on this exact head: go test -race ./continuousscanning/ PASSED in a credential-free, capability-dropped container using Go 1.27.1. Diff whitespace and gofmt checks passed. Current reported GitHub checks are green. Static review included both changed files, scanner naming/labels, pinned slug behavior, callers and existing review replies. I did not independently run a before/after comparison of the new regression on the older head.
Documented limitation: role/ServiceAccount deletion retains a summary when its scan is absent because exact identity is unavailable; binding deletion can still remove it. This conservative behavior is acceptable for this fix. Existing changes-requested reviews are addressed in the current code and do not block this approval. No source changes or merge performed.

Thanks for the four rounds and the merge; each counterexample was real, and the cleaner is safer for them. |
Overview
With continuous scanning on, deleting a RoleBinding, Role, ClusterRole, ClusterRoleBinding, ServiceAccount, Node or any other cluster-scoped object left its posture records in storage.
deletedCleanerHandlerdeletednames.ResourceToSlug(object)in the object's namespace, with the empty namespace for cluster-scoped objects, while the scanner stores cluster-scoped records in the kubescape namespace and RBAC results underRoleBindingResourceToSlug(subject, role, binding)there as well. The three deletes also stopped at the first error and treated a missing record as one, so every non-workload deletion loggedfailed to delete CRDson the vulnerability summary it never had.The handler now deletes the records named after the object where the scanner put them (its namespace, or the kubescape namespace when it has none), then lists the RBAC scans and the RBAC summaries in the kubescape namespace by the labels the scanner writes (
rbac-resourceplus the binding, role or subject keys for the deleted kind) so a record whose counterpart is already gone is still found. The labels only find candidates: the scanner sanitizes them and cuts them at 63 characters, so two live objects can share them. Two names that differ only in a character the sanitizer maps to-share them too, and a cut label can be completed into another name. A candidate is deleted only when it states the deleted object in full: a binding through the wlid annotation the scanner writes on both records; a role through the related objects of the record's scan (a summary through the scan of the same name when that scan is listed); a subject through the record's name, the slug the scanner derives from subject, role and binding, recomputed with the deleted subject and the role and binding the scan's related objects state in full, where the subject's part of the slug is its name unchanged, a DNS subdomain. A summary whose scan is gone states nothing but its binding in full, so a deleted role or subject leaves it and its binding's deletion removes it. A record that is not there is not an error; every delete is attempted and the first other error is returned. The deadRoleBindingbranch ingetObjectNameis gone. The operator ClusterRole already grantsliston the summaries, so no chart change is needed. How to Test
