Overview

This PR adds warning logs when makeEventKey returns an error in CooldownQueue.Enqueue instead of silently dropping the event.

Resolves #451

Signed Commits

  • Yes, I signed my commits.

Additional Information

  • Log a warning with the error and event type using go-logger when makeEventKey(e) fails in watcher/cooldownqueue.go.
  • Added unit tests in watcher/cooldownqueue_test.go verifying that events whose objects do not implement metav1.Object are safely dropped without panicking.

How to Test

Run:
go test -v ./watcher -run 'Test(CooldownQueue|.*makeEventKey)'

Examples/Screenshots

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid events are now safely skipped instead of causing a panic, allowing the queue to continue operating.
    • A warning is logged when an event cannot be processed.

📝 Walkthrough

CooldownQueue.Enqueue now logs a warning when event-key creation fails, then drops the event. Tests cover an object that implements runtime.Object but not metav1.Object, including the resulting error and queue behavior.

Changes: CooldownQueue error handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Log event-key errors
watcher/cooldownqueue.go, watcher/cooldownqueue_test.go
When event-key creation fails, Enqueue logs the error and event type before returning. Tests verify that an invalid object causes an error and does not panic or produce a queued event.

The requested warning currently works, but it could regress silently because the test checks only that the invalid event is dropped.

Explanation

Issue #451 requires a warning when makeEventKey fails, with the error and event type, before the event is dropped. In watcher/cooldownqueue.go, CooldownQueue.Enqueue calls logger.L().Warning with helpers.Error(err) and helpers.String("eventType", string(e.Type)), then returns. The added tests cover a non-metav1.Object, verify an error from makeEventKey, and verify that the queue emits no event.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to the Issue #451 behavior and its automated tests. The logging change reports the failed key creation. The test changes cover the invalid-object error and dropped-event behavior. No unrelated implementation or test changes are present in the reviewed diff.

Assert the warning fields in the invalid-object test.

The test checks only that Enqueue does not panic and drops the event. It can pass if the warning is removed or omits the required error and eventType fields. Capture the logger output and assert the warning message and both fields.

Approved: no material blockers found in the two-file diff. Reviewed head 8c204e9 against main at cbfcda0; immediately rechecked open/non-draft/mergeable status and unchanged head/base.

The diagnostic is needed: the target branch returns silently when makeEventKey rejects a non-metav1.Object, as described in #451. Enqueue now emits the requested warning with error and eventType before preserving the existing drop. SBOM watcher events reach this queue directly. This is an observability fix, not a new panic fix. No API, configuration, dependency, keying, or lifecycle change; independent correctness and architecture reviews found no blockers.

History: merged #279 introduced the watcher cooldown queue; #322 extended startup processing; #392 added the security-exception consumer. Merged #174 concerns a separate continuous-scanning queue; its objections about key identity/deleted events and goroutine handling do not apply to this logging-only change. No explicit rejection of this approach or superseding fix was found. Searches covered open and closed PRs and issues using cooldown, makeEventKey, silently, and dropping event, capped at 100 results/query; a final cooldownqueue.go search was rate-limited, so this is not exhaustive.

Validation: complete changed files, base/head diff, caller, existing logger usage and dependency inspected; gofmt -d on both changed files produced no differences. GitHub reports Basic-Test, cross-platform build, integration-build, CodeQL, DCO and security/license checks passing for this head. Local tests/build/lint/race were not run: host Go is 1.25.0 and the available Go container is 1.26.8, below go.mod's 1.26.9 requirement. Added tests verify invalid-object rejection but pass without the new warning; warning-field assertions would improve regression coverage, already noted by CodeRabbit, and are nonblocking. No duplicate inline feedback posted.
