Overview

This PR fixes #453.

Signed Commits

  • Yes, I signed my commits.

CRD-triggered configuration scans currently mark OperatorCommand successful as soon as the scanner accepts the request. A later poll also treats any notBusy response as success, including after scan failure.

This change keeps the command pending with its scan ID until the scanner reports a matching terminal outcome. It records failed and cancelled scans as errors, resumes pending scans after an operator restart, and retries transient scanner reads and Kubernetes status writes.

Additional Information

The operator requires the companion [scanner outcome change](ANAMASGARD/kubescape@e07faee) to expose succeeded, failed, cancelled, or unknown through /v1/status. Deploy the scanner change first. With an older scanner or an unknown outcome, the operator records an unavailable-outcome error rather than reporting success.

The outcome describes scanner execution; it does not establish downstream Storage persistence. The [contract and rollout note](https://github.com/ANAMASGARD/operator/blob/fix/operator-command-scan-outcome/docs/research/scan-command-outcome.md) documents that boundary.

How to Test

go test ./mainhandler ./utils -count=1
go test ./watcher -skip '^TestRegistryCommandWatch$' -count=1
go test ./... -run '^$'

The focused race tests for dispatch, terminal outcomes, status retries, and restart recovery also passed. TestRegistryCommandWatch needs a Docker runtime unavailable locally; it fails for the same environmental reason on the unchanged baseline. A live-cluster journey has not been verified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Kubescape scans now remain in progress until the scanner reports a terminal result, preventing accepted scans from appearing completed prematurely.
    • Scanner success, failure, and cancellation outcomes are reflected in command status; unavailable or mismatched scan results no longer produce a false success.
    • Pending scans can resume after redelivery using their existing scan ID, preserving the original start time and avoiding duplicate scans.
    • Temporary status-read and status-update failures are retried, with repeated failures ultimately reported as errors.

📝 Walkthrough

CRD-triggered Kubescape scans now remain pending after acceptance and complete based on scan-ID-correlated terminal outcomes. The operator retries status reads and writes, and resumes qualifying unfinished scans from their saved scan IDs. A research note documents the proposed scanner contract and its limits.

Changes: Kubescape scan outcome handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scan acceptance and pending status
mainhandler/handlerequests.go, mainhandler/kubescapehandler.go, mainhandler/kubescapehandlerhelper.go, utils/types.go, docs/research/scan-command-outcome.md
Accepted scans with parent command details remain pending and record their scan ID. The response type includes optional outcome and error fields. The research note describes the scanner outcome contract, observed false-success paths, and design limits.
Terminal outcome polling and persistence
mainhandler/kubescapehandler.go, mainhandler/kubescape_scan_outcome_test.go
Polling checks the scan ID and outcome before completing the command. Transient status-read and status-patch failures are retried. Tests cover success, errors, unavailable outcomes, and retries.
Pending scan replay
watcher/commandshandler.go, watcher/commandswatcher.go, watcher/scan_command_replay_test.go, watcher/scan_command_started_at_test.go
The watcher registers receivers during handler construction and delivers qualifying old pending scans. Replayed commands retain their saved scan ID and original start time.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fd900

Deleted commands can cause unnecessary repeated requests, and scanner rejections have misleading error text. A restart during failed status writes can also repeat a scan request. These are bounded risks to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR satisfies the coding requirements in #453. handleRequest does not mark parent RunKubescape or RunKubescapeJob commands successful after asynchronous acceptance. kubescapeScan records the scan ID as pending, and HandleKubescapeResponse requires the matching ID, notBusy, and outcome succeeded before success. It records failed, cancelled, unknown, mismatched, and unavailable outcomes as errors. kubescapeScan resumes a stored pending scan ID, and the watcher delivers eligible old pending scans after restart. The PR adds focused tests for acceptance, terminal outcomes, retries, and restart recovery.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #453. The status-write and scanner-read retries protect the required pending and terminal outcome states. The watcher registration and replay changes support restart recovery. The added tests verify the requested behavior. The research note documents the scan outcome contract and its boundary. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed summary or source files.

Stop retrying terminal status writes after NotFound.

When the OperatorCommand is deleted, the terminal patch returns NotFound. The response handler has no cancellation for deleted commands and schedules another timer whenever the callback returns true. This can retain a timer worker and retry every 40 seconds indefinitely. Treat NotFound as terminal. Keep retries for other errors; a universal cap is not required for this deletion case.

Stop polling when the pending status write returns NotFound.

When the deleted OperatorCommand returns NotFound, the pending-write error is ignored and a busy scan is requeued every 40 seconds. Add a guard in this pending-write branch so the callback does not issue repeated Kubernetes and scanner requests.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Print the scanner message, not the embedded struct.

response is now *kubescapeV1ScanResponse. It embeds utilsmetav1.Response. The embedded field name Response sits at depth 0. It hides the inner Response message field. response.Response therefore returns the whole embedded struct. The CRD error text becomes Kubescape scan rejected: {<id> error <message>} instead of the message alone.

Use response.Response.Response. The tests at lines 98-99 of kubescape_scan_outcome_test.go only check that the error is non-nil. They do not catch this.
