Summary

Refactor the existing native Desktop relay's selected-proxy handshake into a single-route transport. The production chain remains relay-listener → dialDesktopUpstream → dialTunnel; proxy selection, explicit DIRECT/NO_PROXY, fixed chatgpt.com target TLS, cancellation and shutdown stay with the existing relay.

  • The helper accepts exactly one HTTP/HTTPS CONNECT or SOCKS5/SOCKS5h route and returns its paused socket. It has no alternate-route failover, retry classification, dynamic target-policy callback, route IDs, TLS server-name override or Buffer-CA API.
  • Proxy and target TLS identities stay verified; request-local credentials are used only in the selected handshake. A failed selected proxy never falls back directly.
  • Preserve bounded setup, cancellation, queued bytes and half-close behavior. The Desktop consumer restores its existing EOF behavior before target TLS wrapping.
  • Remove the unused owned-session/ingress/version-management layers and the later generic-only policy/failover surface. The reported macOS authorization test race is eliminated with the unused dynamic-policy API and its tests, not described as a retained capability.
  • Retain all four protocol regression families and the real consumer's four-scheme EOF regressions. HTTPS fixtures now verify their actual loopback host; wrong-identity coverage uses a genuinely mismatching certificate.

User-visible changes are stricter HTTP Basic username/credential-size and CONNECT-response validation. The relay already supported these proxy schemes; this PR does not introduce original-App proxy-auth support, quota admission, a listener, certificate installation or persistent credential injection.

Verification

Validation uses Bun 1.4.3, the repository's official scripts/test.ts runner and normal queue/resource limits. All network fixtures are loopback; no user account or device was used. An offline preload refuses unmocked external fetches.

env -i HOME=/tmp PATH="$BUN_DIR:/usr/bin:/bin" OCX_TEST_RUNNER_BUN="$BUN" \
  "$BUN" scripts/test.ts --preload /tmp/thinking-offline-preload.ts \
  tests/lib/opaque-proxy-tunnel.test.ts \

  tests/codex-integration/codex-inject.test.ts
"$BUN" node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc --noEmit
"$BUN" scripts/structure-ssot.ts
"$BUN" scripts/privacy-scan.ts
git diff --check
(cd docs-site && HOME=/tmp ASTRO_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1 "$BUN" run build)

Current-head focused result: 194 passed, zero failed, 964 Bun assertions across seven files. Production TypeScript, structure SSOT, privacy and whitespace checks pass. Documentation build passes: 577 pages and 81,203 internal links using existing frozen dependencies, with no dependency/lockfile change.

Current-head connected Desktop runtime/store checks also pass: 59 + 5 tests, 353 assertions, using the same bounded loopback-proxy validation preload described below. Production source typecheck, structure, privacy and docs were rerun on this single-route revision. A fresh full/356-file run was not repeated after this reduction: the earlier controlled 354-file baseline pair below is historical evidence, not current-head full-suite certification. All changed protocol and real-consumer paths are covered by the focused and connected checks; full release-platform coverage remains required before merge.

Earlier-head broad-run attribution (not a claim that the current suite passes)

The official --changed=7640a942b35044c974e534b84d5a8049f4a8ae9a run selected 356 files: 7,866 pass, 34 skip, 253 fail and one unhandled error. The 253 failures reconcile exactly to 251 named test failures plus two file-worker SIGKILL events. No OOM diagnosis is asserted.

A controlled comparison froze baseline dev 7640a942 and the earlier PR head 3dba53cf (tree 566c92bc), before the single-route reduction, selected the same 354 baseline-existing files in the same order, and ran them sequentially through the official runner with the same Bun, restricted PATH and original offline preload. The two candidate-only protocol files are covered in the passing focused suite.

  • Baseline: 7,811 pass, 34 skip, 261 fail (259 named failures + two worker crashes), zero unhandled errors.
  • Candidate: 7,845 pass, 34 skip, 248 fail (247 named failures + one worker crash), zero unhandled errors.
  • All 247 named candidate failures match baseline failures by test-title multiset; no candidate-only named failure was found.
  • Of the original 251 named failures, 247 match baseline. The other four are timing/cleanup failures in cli-provider-batch, api-storage-cleanup and storage-restore-job-responsive. Each file was rerun individually on both trees with the original environment: respectively 46, 11 and four tests pass on each tree.
  • The original unhandled error follows a 30-second storage test timeout (observed around 51 seconds), teardown cancelling an active restore, and the still-pending assertion seeing the resulting 500 instead of 200. It did not recur in either controlled broad run or either isolated run. The original scheduling stall's underlying cause remains unproven.
  • File crashes affected server-live and request-decompress originally; the paired baseline also crashed doctor-provider-apikey. Individual baseline/candidate reruns pass respectively 55, 59 and 11 tests on both trees. SIGKILL is observed; its originating resource/controller is not identified.

Observed shared-failure signatures include offline-fetch refusal, conflicting spend-ledger ownership, temporary-directory ownership refusal, missing Node in the deliberately isolated PATH, sandbox getifaddrs failure, and assertion mismatches. Matching baseline results establish non-incremental failure evidence, not that every underlying baseline defect has been repaired.

For the five directly connected Desktop tests, the original preload rejects the logical chatgpt.com URL even though the test explicitly uses a local CONNECT fixture. Baseline and candidate both produce 59 pass / five fail / 309 assertions. A bounded verification preload allows only that HTTPS host with an explicit HTTP 127.0.0.1 fixture proxy and supplied test CA; all other external fetches stay blocked. Both trees then pass all 64 tests (353 assertions). No repository source or safety boundary was weakened to obtain this result.

Extended strict test-file compilation still reports the previously reproduced baseline diagnostic scripts/test-temp-lock.ts:78 TS2339 SyncSubprocess.signal; source TypeScript passes and no compiler settings were weakened. The full repository suite and real-device/original-App integration were not run. Hosted functional CI requires maintainer approval and remains a pre-merge requirement.

Independent source/security-boundary review covers the real consumer chain, TLS and credential isolation, no direct fallback, EOF assertions before cleanup, and removal of unused runtime/test/documentation references.

Maintainer triage review at 3dba53cf3. Two things need to change before this can land.

1. A deterministic macOS failure. tests/lib/opaque-proxy-tunnel-protocol.test.ts:123, case http: revoked target authorization during connection sends no CONNECT or credentials, fails on every run on macOS (Bun 1.4.3, 5/5): applicationBytes is 146, expected 0. The test revokes authorization from the fixture server's connection callback (tests/helpers/opaque-proxy-tunnel-protocol.ts:187). Nothing orders that callback before the client's connect event, and on macOS the client fires first. So onConnect passes authorize() and writes the CONNECT before the flag flips. The production path is fine; the test races. Linux CI happens to pass, but the macOS leg of the release-line CI would go red. Suggested fix: drive revocation from the client side. For example, deny on the post-connect recheck (allowTarget returns false once it has been called past the pre-dial checks), or gate the fixture so the client's connect cannot run before revocation.

2. Scope relative to its only consumer. After the narrowing, dialDesktopUpstream (src/lib/desktop-upstream-tunnel.ts:58) is the only caller, and it always passes one candidate with a fixed allowTarget. Much of src/lib/opaque-proxy-tunnel.ts then has no production path: the ordered-candidate failover and retryable classification (:119, :122, :184, :265-269), proxyServername, Buffer CAs, the exported acceptsTargetPolicy and validateAuthority, and the per-attempt authorization rechecks. The net effect replaces about 40 lines of inline handshake code with 274 lines plus about 600 lines of tests. User-visible behavior is the same, apart from stricter Basic-username and header validation. Please do one of two things:

  • shrink the module to the single-route dialer the desktop relay needs, keeping the four-scheme protocol tests and the EOF/half-close regression; or
  • keep the generic multi-candidate form, but land it in the same PR as the second consumer that needs failover, so reviewers can check those paths against real use.

Either way, update the docs-site section to describe only the behavior that actually changes for users; most of it describes the relay's existing proxy support.

Focused local run on macOS: bun run test on the two opaque-tunnel files plus optional-desktop-upstream, desktop-compatibility-relay, and the two layout tests gives 142 pass / 1 fail (the case above).

Addressed in ef6d749 by taking the single-route option.

The sole production caller now passes one route and receives one socket. Removed candidate failover/retry classification, dynamic authorization callbacks/rechecks, route IDs, proxyServername and Buffer CAs. The relay keeps its fixed-target TLS, route selection, total setup deadline and connection lifecycle. The reported macOS test is removed together with the unused dynamic-policy capability; I am not claiming to have reproduced or validated macOS locally.

The four-scheme authentication/TLS/timeout/cancellation/opaque-byte tests and the real Desktop EOF/half-close regression remain. Wrong-proxy-identity coverage now presents a genuinely mismatching certificate instead of using an unused production override. User documentation describes only the stricter Basic/CONNECT validation, not existing SOCKS support as a new feature.

Bun 1.4.3 official-runner focused validation: 194 pass / 0 fail across seven files, plus connected Desktop runtime/store 64 pass / 0 fail. Source typecheck, structure, privacy and docs build pass. PR Verification distinguishes these current-head checks from the earlier broad-run baseline attribution and retains the full-suite/platform limitations.
