Summary

DeepSeek's separate HTTP body limit can reject screenshot-heavy sessions well before token-based compaction. For models opted in via modelCapabilities.<modelId>.deepseekImageFiles: true on first-party Responses URLs, replace older inline images with byte-identical, one-hour Files API references when the body exceeds 40 MiB, aiming for 32 MiB. Client history, token usage and inference retry policy stay intact.

Uploads are disabled by default. Setting modelCapabilities.<modelId>.deepseekImageFiles: true opts that model in to one-hour persisted image uploads on api.deepseek.com.

Upload contract and guards

  • Fixed HTTPS api.deepseek.com Responses/File endpoints, POST only, manual redirects, authorization header only. Uploads use the selected provider's transport and proxy/TLS policy.
  • One-hour expiry requested. Successful partial uploads persist until expiry even if the turn fails. A 512-entry credential/image-hash cache retains opaque IDs for at most 50 minutes, bounded by any earlier reported expiry. Retries reuse successful same-credential uploads; other credentials cannot reuse them.
  • Every physical upload and final inference send retain credential-generation fences. Ordinary uploads retain provider pacing/concurrency; a dispatch rebuild already inside its enclosing fetch lease acquires an interval-only slot (concurrency: false) without reacquiring the concurrency lease.
  • Exact final wire-model metadata excludes unlisted models before preparation admission. Caller cancellation and a 60-second upload deadline; 128 MiB repair-input ceiling and at most two concurrent preparations. Parsed copies, base64/decoded/Blob/multipart workspace and replacement serialization are observed in the translator budget and released in finally blocks.
  • Explicit low-detail images, foreign gateways and Chat requests stay unchanged. Upload failures preserve images and do not trigger model-generation retries.

Verification

  • Image replay, native key cooldown, request pacing, model suffix, configuration validation, load degradation, layout, file-size ratchet and model-rename migration (Bun 1.4.3): 189 passed, including disabled-by-default consent, per-model modelCapabilities opt-in and PATCH tombstone clearing, concurrent unlisted-model exclusion, same-account reuse/isolation, provider expiry, partial failure/retry, workspace accounting, preparation concurrency, stale queued credentials and interval-paced credential rebuild inside a limit-one inference lease.
  • Cursor image suite: 49 passed; Kiro image suite: 18 passed; compiled CodeBuddy catalog check: 1 passed.
  • TypeScript typecheck, privacy scan, structure checks, layout checks and diff whitespace checks passed.
  • Documentation build passed: 577 pages / 81,464 internal links.
  • bun run test:changed expanded across the shared core and was interrupted during concurrent native release packaging on this shared host (exit 130); four five-second timeouts all passed in isolated runs. Full-suite coverage is left to CI under the documented shared-host resource exception.
  • Live non-inference smoke verified requested expiry (~3599 seconds) with a synthetic 1px image and deleted it.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added optional DeepSeek image uploads for explicitly enabled models when eligible Responses requests exceed 40 MiB. Supported inline images may be replaced with file references to reduce the request body to 32 MiB or less, while preserving image content, client history, and input-token reporting.
    • Uploads have size and concurrency limits, expire after one hour, and may be reused on retry. Failed uploads do not replay inference.
  • Documentation

    • Explained opt-in settings, request limits, upload behavior, caching, error handling, and interactions with transport and account-pausing behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds an opt-in capability that lets eligible oversized DeepSeek Responses requests replace inline images with Files API references. Request construction applies credential and pacing checks before forwarding the rewritten body. Configuration validation, tests, and documentation cover the capability and conversion rules.

Changes: DeepSeek image replay

Adds the deepseekImageFiles capability, validates boolean values, handles null patches and load-time sanitization, and tests retention across model renames. Configuration references list the capability.

Adds eligibility checks and conversion of inline images to Files API references. The handler applies size limits, caching, cancellation, and budget accounting. Tests cover conversion, exclusions, upload failures, cache behavior, and preparation limits. Documentation describes conversion rules and limits.

Runs conversion during request construction and checks credential binding. Uploads use pacing behavior based on whether dispatch already holds a pacing lease. Route tests cover credential changes, forwarding, and input-token usage.

Review intake at e12cf208aa: this changes the operation from inline inference data to separate persisted provider files, so it needs explicit owner acceptance of the upload/retention contract, not only request-size tests. Keep first-party endpoint/model allowlisting, physical credential-generation fences before each upload and final inference, expiry/account isolation, cancellation/deadline, partial upload failure and retry reuse visible in the receipts. Please account for the additional JSON/base64/decoded/multipart allocations under the translator budget and explain the deliberate pacing exclusion without losing aggregate concurrency limits. Current quality gates/bot READY do not include functional CI in the rollup I inspected. Holding approval; no upload, provider call or scan was executed here.

Intake/scoped review at c2786b122f4264de34740d5fdc8272a14b00dcbe.

The updated branch introduces upload-backed image replay plus provider/config/management admission changes. Its current readiness gate still reports unsponsored_surface on auth-cors.ts. Keep the explicit upload opt-in, immutable file ownership/destination, bounded reads and retry/cleanup semantics separate; no sponsorship or whole-boundary approval is inferred from a green hygiene message.

Current-head functional workflows are awaiting fork approval; that is pending execution, not a passing test result. No local suite was run for this branch in this intake. No workflow approval, new scan, live configuration change or merge was performed. Required review/readiness gates remain in force.

Updated-head intake at 6b509102848c0fe88eb771817cfde5a05fb15a21: acknowledged the rebase and added boundary fixtures. The current diff no longer edits auth-cors.ts, so the old path-specific sponsorship observation is not repeated as a current blocker. Upload-backed image replay still creates provider-side retained files and needs owner acceptance of that opt-in retention/credential-destination contract. Keep generation fences on each upload/final inference, bounded JSON/base64/decoded/multipart accounting, retry reuse and cancellation/partial-failure behavior explicit. The author reports 189 focused tests; I did not re-execute them or upload any file. Current-head hosted CI remains action_required, not a passing functional receipt; no whole-boundary approval or live provider operation is inferred.

Carried into #7394 (squash 74463a2) on dev with a Co-authored-by trailer (B4 bundle). Added on top: each queued upload re-checks the config generation and the model's current deepseekImageFiles opt-in, so a revoked opt-in or config reload can no longer send the image. Upload-backed replay stays strictly opt-in per model and off by default; the retention contract is documented in the providers configuration reference. It ships in the next release (2.90.0). Thanks!
