Summary

Vertex AI and direct Gemini requests previously forwarded only thinkingLevel inside generationConfig.thinkingConfig, ignoring provider.showThinkingSummary. Without includeThoughts: true, Google withholds thought: true chunks for the entire internal reasoning phase—leaving long Vertex gemini-4-argon turns completely silent on the SSE stream until reasoning finishes and tripping the 200 s routed-model response-byte inactivity guard during web-search turns.

This extends the existing provider.showThinkingSummary opt-in (already supported on Cloud Code Assist) to thinking-eligible Vertex and direct Gemini requests:

  • When thinkingEligible && provider.showThinkingSummary === true && parsed.options.hideThinkingSummary !== true && /^gemini-/.test(routedModelId), include includeThoughts: true in generationConfig.thinkingConfig alongside thinkingLevel (or on its own when no explicit effort was mapped).
  • Set returnsThoughtSummaries under the same thinkingEligible && provider.showThinkingSummary === true guard so returned thought: true parts classify as thinking_delta summaries rather than raw reasoning.
  • Default behavior is unchanged: google-vertex and google presets still leave showThinkingSummary unset (false), explicit client reasoning.summary: "none" (hideThinkingSummary: true) suppresses includeThoughts, and unladdered Vertex models or image-capable models are excluded.

Verification

  • bun test tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts: 58 pass, 0 fail (5 new test cases including stream=false/true parity and reused-adapter provenance reset across eligible, unladdered, and image-capable models, covering Vertex and direct Gemini includeThoughts opt-in, omission when unset/false/client-suppressed, exclusion of unladdered Vertex and image models, and thinking_delta vs reasoning_raw_delta provenance).
  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun test tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts tests/adapters/google/google-hardening.test.ts tests/adapters/google/google-wire-compiler.test.ts tests/responses/responses-show-thinking-summary.test.ts tests/responses/protocol-argon-thought-boundary.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts: 289 pass, 0 fail.
  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun test tests/providers/opencode-go-gemini-wire.test.ts tests/providers/opencode-zen-gemini-wire.test.ts: 68 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun x tsc --noEmit, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun run skill:surface:check: exit 0.
  • Live against Vertex gemini-4-argon with showThinkingSummary: true: first response.reasoning_summary_text.delta SSE chunk arrives in ~2.8–3.8 s and streams every 4–6 s throughout reasoning; with reasoning: { summary: "none" }, no summary deltas are emitted.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Eligible direct Gemini, Vertex, and Cloud Code Assist Gemini requests can include thought summaries when display is enabled and summaries aren’t suppressed.
    • Thought summaries remain unavailable for image-capable models, unladdered Vertex models, and models excluded from reasoning; existing exclusions for Claude and gpt-oss are unchanged.
    • Thought text from opted-in eligible Gemini requests, including Cloud Code Assist Gemini, is now recognized as a thinking update.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the configuration reference to describe when thought summaries are included.

📝 Walkthrough

Eligible CCA, Vertex, and direct Gemini requests can opt into thought summaries. The Google adapter classifies marked thought parts as thinking_delta for supported requests. Documentation and tests cover opt-in conditions, exclusions, and response classification.

Changes: Google thought summaries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Enable thought summaries for eligible requests
src/adapters/google.ts, structure/providers/google.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/providers.md, tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts
Eligible requests can include thinkingConfig.includeThoughts: true when provider opt-in and per-request display conditions allow it. The request configuration is emitted when a thinking level or thought summaries are requested. Tests cover enabled and excluded cases, including unladdered Vertex and image-capable models.
Classify returned thought text
structure/providers/google.md, tests/adapters/google/google-adapter.test.ts
The classifier includes built CCA Gemini requests when it classifies marked thought parts as thinking_delta. Tests verify reasoning_raw_delta for requests without opt-in and unladdered Vertex models. They also cover successive requests on a reused adapter.

Cloud Code Assist Gemini requests opt into
generationConfig.thinkingConfig.includeThoughts and classify returned
thought: true parts as thinking_delta summaries when
provider.showThinkingSummary is enabled, while Vertex and direct Gemini
only forwarded thinkingLevel and left Google streaming silent for the
entire reasoning phase (triggering 200s response-byte inactivity timeouts
on long reasoning turns).

Honor provider.showThinkingSummary on thinking-eligible Vertex and direct
Gemini requests as well, subject to the same per-request
hideThinkingSummary gate, non-image guard, and Gemini model-family check.
Unopted providers, unladdered Vertex models, image models, and explicit
summary:"none" requests remain unchanged.

Code/test review at 4fd43d5035: the opt-in is confined to thinking-eligible Gemini, the empty ladder/noReasoningModels exclusion is now explicit, and request suppression keeps includeThoughts off. The added buffered tests check payload and event provenance; please also keep stream-path parity and adapter reuse across eligible/ineligible models explicit in the verification scope. Current head has successful readiness/hygiene/target checks but no functional CI run in its rollup; a historical cancelled gate is not the current result, and bot READY is not executed adapter coverage. Holding approval until head-bound functional CI evidence is available. No live Google request or local suite was run in this review.

Intake/scoped review at 2856074117650b775fa5bb89ae1ad1b95f4b04df.

The new head adds thought-summary behavior and buffered/streaming eligibility coverage for direct Gemini/Vertex. Retain the explicit opt-in, noReasoningModels/empty-ladder exclusions and stream/buffered parity requested previously. The named current-head tests/CI, rather than a previous-head aggregate, must establish readiness.

Current-head functional workflows are awaiting fork approval; that is pending execution, not a passing test result. No local suite was run for this branch in this intake. No workflow approval, new scan, live configuration change or merge was performed. Required review/readiness gates remain in force.

Carried into #7394 (squash 74463a2) on dev with a Co-authored-by trailer, as part of the B4 provider-adapter bundle. It ships in the next release (2.90.0). Thanks!
