Summary

  • providerFetch applied the provider dispatchOverride only on the HTTP path. The Codex WebSocket branch called codexWsUpstreamFetch directly, so an unpaced key-auth WebSocket send (for example api.openai.com with upstreamWebsocket: true) never ran oauthDispatch: commitKeyAttemptSend and rebindPhysicalSend were skipped, and the attempt row reported sendCount: 0 for a response.create frame that left (codexWsStage.sent: true). The send-budget receipt itself was already charged through onPhysicalDispatch; the attempt-row commit, the send-budget identity rebind and the selection check were not.
  • The WS branch now runs the same override around the WS send. oauthDispatch recognises the marked WS executor (codexWsExecutorBinding) and hands it the send directly, because HTTP connection policy (Connection: close, body byte coding/compression, redirect: "manual") does not apply to a socket dial. The HTTP fallback inside that WS exchange skips the override (httpFetch(..., null)), so one logical send is still committed once.
  • WS eligibility (egress, pacing, URL) is checked against the provider the WS executor was built for. If oauthDispatch reselects route.provider before sending, the replacement was never checked, so it is sent through the executor's HTTP fallback under the replacement's own egress route instead of the WebSocket (CodeRabbit review).
  • Only oauthDispatch reaches this branch: the other overrides (native Chat, native Messages, keyed compact) target URLs the WS selector never accepts, and per-key or round-robin pacing already forces HTTP/SSE.

Verification

  • tests/responses/responses-spend-anchor.test.ts "Responses WS executor normal ..." now also asserts ctx.activeAttempt.sendCount === 1. On an unmodified upstream/dev 8640c2f worktree with only that test change: 64 pass, 1 fail (Expected: 1, Received: 0). With this PR: 65 pass, 0 fail.
  • New responses-spend-anchor.test.ts case "a key reselected at the WS dispatch boundary is not sent over the WS its predecessor was cleared for": the key and an explicit proxy change together when the dispatch boundary rechecks the selection. Before the follow-up commit it fails (Expected length: 0, Received length: 1: the replacement dialled a WebSocket); after it, no socket is opened and the one HTTP send carries proxy: http://proxy.fixture.test:8080/. Whole file: 66 pass.
  • tests/responses/responses-dispatch-receipt.test.ts D7 previously used an override that always threw to simulate a local HTTP refusal on the WS fallback; the override now wraps the WS send, so D7 keeps its intent by refusing the fallback through beforeDispatch once the socket send failed, and additionally asserts the override ran exactly once (no second commit on fallback). 7 pass.
  • bun test tests/responses/ws-*.test.ts tests/responses/responses-spend-anchor.test.ts tests/server/fetch-header-timeout.test.ts tests/responses/responses-fetch-helpers-boundary.test.ts -> 618 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun x tsc --noEmit -> exit 0. bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts -> passed.
  • bun run test:changed (Bun 1.4.3 via OCX_TEST_RUNNER_BUN) -> 16188 pass, 1 fail across 654 files (after the follow-up commit). The single failure, tests/cli/cli-connect-readiness.test.ts "a rejected preferred runtime falls back without rewriting the saved selection", also fails on an unmodified upstream/dev checkout on this machine (local-environment dependent) and is unrelated.
  • Full bun run test was not run locally; the remainder is left to CI.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (One sentence in structure/transports/responses.md.)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (The WS send now passes the same credential-selection check as HTTP; no secrets are logged and no default changes.)

Source: carried from the vadymhimself fork build (commit 8daae71), re-authored against the current providerFetch (WS fallback receipts, pacing readmission); the fork version passed the WS send through the HTTP connection policy, which this PR avoids.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved send accounting when a WebSocket request falls back to HTTP. The original send remains counted if the fallback is refused, and the send budget is not refunded.
    • Ensured dispatch settings are applied consistently to WebSocket sends without being applied again during HTTP fallback.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how WebSocket dispatch, fallback behavior, and send pacing work.

providerFetch applied `dispatchOverride` only on the HTTP path. The
WebSocket branch called codexWsUpstreamFetch directly, so a key-auth
WebSocket send (api.openai.com with upstreamWebsocket) never reached
commitKeyAttemptSend or rebindPhysicalSend: its attempt row reported
sendCount 0 for a frame that left. The WS send now runs through the same
override; the override hands a marked WS executor its send directly
instead of HTTP connection policy, and the HTTP fallback inside it skips
the override so one logical send is counted once.

📝 Walkthrough

Codex WebSocket sends now pass through the configured dispatch override. The HTTP fallback disables that override after a WebSocket attempt. Request transport dispatches marked WebSocket executors directly, and tests cover fallback receipt charging and send counting.

Changes: Responses WebSocket dispatch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Route WebSocket sends through the dispatch override
src/server/responses/fetch-helpers.ts, src/server/responses/request-transport.ts
The fetch helper marks Codex WebSocket executors and applies the effective dispatch override to WebSocket sends. The HTTP fallback disables the override. Request transport dispatches marked executors directly.
Specify and test fallback receipt behavior
structure/transports/responses.md, tests/responses/responses-dispatch-receipt.test.ts, tests/responses/responses-spend-anchor.test.ts
The transport contract describes override handling for WebSocket sends and HTTP fallback. Tests check that a rejected HTTP fallback leaves the receipt charged and that a key-auth WebSocket send increments the attempt’s send count.

This change fixes undercounted WebSocket sends but introduces two problems. First, when a provider is swapped mid-dispatch, the request can travel over a different network route than the new provider is configured to use. Second, a WebSocket request refused locally before any data is sent can still be recorded as sent. Both should be fixed before merge.

WS eligibility (egress, pacing, URL) is checked against the provider the
WS executor was built for. The dispatch override can replace route.provider
before it calls the executor; that replacement was never checked, so it
could ride a WebSocket its own config rules out (e.g. an explicit proxy).
The WS executor now records the provider it was admitted for and its HTTP
fallback; when the override serves a different provider it sends through
that fallback under the replacement's own egress route.

Intake/scoped review at 0143310694d3c7aed7a4e2f9f06a477303976133.

The WS branch now runs the dispatch override and marks the WS executor so an HTTP-only fallback does not apply the override twice. Keep receipts for successful WS, pre-output fallback, changed provider selection and exactly one physical dispatch; HTTP connection/content-coding policy must not be imposed on the socket executor. This transport/credential change still needs its explicit boundary review.

Current-head functional workflows are awaiting fork approval; that is pending execution, not a passing test result. No local suite was run for this branch in this intake. No workflow approval, new scan, live configuration change or merge was performed. Required review/readiness gates remain in force.

Landed on dev as part of the dispatch/usage/failover bundle #7389 (squash bddd61f), with Co-authored-by credit. Adaptations are listed in #7389 (ratchet move for #7323/#7373; the Kiro hop is now fenced to the adapter the failed leg actually resolved). Closing as absorbed. Thank you!
