fix(launcher): scope an inherited transpiler cache to the Bun version it starts - #7362
Conversation
… it starts The CI shard cache is shared by the test-runner Bun (1.4.3) and the bundled runtime the launcher starts (1.4.2). Bun keys .pile entries by source hash and deletes entries written in another release's format, so each version evicted the other's on every start and launcher children loaded the CLI graph cold (15 s Windows spawnSync timeout, run 38697651428). Pass the child <cache>/bun-<version>; leave disabled/unset caches and overrides untouched. Drop the attest test's cold budget now that the cause is gone.

Accept versions the PATH resolver already validates
When the bundled runtime is unavailable and an accepted PATH Bun reports a version with build metadata such as 1.4.0+build.1, findPathBun returns that version (and tests/cli/ocx-launcher-runtime.test.ts explicitly requires it), but this regex rejects it. The launcher consequently leaves the shared cache unscoped, recreating the cross-version eviction and Windows timeout behavior this change is intended to fix; align this validation with the PATH resolver's accepted stable-version grammar.

Match the cache variable case-insensitively on Windows
On Windows, environment-variable names are case-insensitive, but inheritedEnv is a spread into an ordinary case-sensitive object. If the inherited environment spells this variable as Bun_Runtime_Transpiler_Cache_Path or another casing, this lookup misses it even though Bun receives and honors it, so the cache remains shared and the eviction/timeout issue persists. Locate the actual key case-insensitively on Windows and replace that entry rather than assuming the uppercase spelling.

Restore the cold-spawn budget for this attestation.
The Windows qualification lane exports OPENCODEX_BUN_PATH, and this test inherits it. The launcher uses that override without a runtime version, so the new cache scoping does not apply. This test is the first Node-to-Bun spawn and covers the documented Windows cold-start path. Its 40-second child timeout can expire during the documented 15–40-second cold load, causing spawnSync to return an error before the attestation assertions run.

Summary
On hosted Windows, the published Node launcher's Bun child loaded its whole CLI graph cold in CI. One run hit a 15 s
spawnSynctimeout:Codex CLI updater zero-effect boundary > published Node launcher attest observes explicit files without executing targets or changing state(run 38697651428, job 116298023775). #7151 raised that one budget toCOLD_SPAWN_BUDGET_MSwithout a cause.Root cause.
scripts/ci/run-bun-test-batches.shgives each shard one sharedBUN_RUNTIME_TRANSPILER_CACHE_PATHso children start warm; its comment records that cold loads pushed first Windows spawns to 15–40 s. The launcher starts the bundled runtime (dependencies.bun1.4.2), but the tests run ontestRunnerBun1.4.3, and both inherit the same directory. Bun names.pileentries by source hash alone and stamps them with a format version (1.4.2 writes 28, 1.4.3 writes 34). A reader that finds the other format deletes the entry and rewrites it. So the two runtimes evict each other: every launcher child after any runner activity re-transpiles about 380 CLI modules and rewrites them, and the next runner child does the same in reverse. On Windows each rewrite is also a new file for Defender to scan.Measured on this Mac with one shared explicit cache (file headers):
bun-1.4.2/: 714 × 28Change. When the launcher inherits an explicit cache, it passes its Bun child
<cache>/bun-<version>. The version comes from the bundledbunpackage's installed version, or from the probed version of a validated PATH Bun. Bun creates the subdirectory itself, under the protected parent. A disabled (0or empty) or unset cache, an explicitOPENCODEX_BUN_PATHoverride (version unknown) and a malformed version are all left exactly as given. The helper issrc/lib/bun-transpiler-cache-scope.mjs. Outside CI this only matters to someone who setsBUN_RUNTIME_TRANSPILER_CACHE_PATHand runs another Bun version against it, and they get the same fix.Because the cause is gone, the attest test drops the special

spawnSynccallers. Every test that spawnsbin/ocx.mjs(about 27 files) shared this eviction, and this one launcher change covers all of them. Fresh-Bun spawns from the runner were also re-transpiling entries the launcher had just rewritten; they now stay warm too.tests/cli/cli-version-skew.test.tsdisables the cache under a 5 s budget, but across every downloaded Windows log it peaks at 1.5 s, so I left it unchanged. The other spawns in the review list have no failure evidence either. Not changed: the ~20 s Windows
modelAliases sync writes unique slugs (#4730) > real sync dedups duplicate rows…timeout. It appears once in the last ~25 failed scheduled and dispatched ci.yml runs (run 38076321584, job 114283955397, head 848ec37, 2026-10-10). That run predates #7107 (494c50d, 10-14), which introduced the shared shard cache precisely because Windows first spawns were timing out on cold module loads. On 10-10 every batch started with an empty transpiler cache, and this file was the first file of batch 15. Itsbun --evalchild had to transpile the whole catalog-sync graph cold before running, and the log shows no child output before the 20 s deadline (killed 1 dangling process,[spawn signal] SIGTERM). Passing Windows runs take 0.58–2.0 s. The product path itself is bounded: 8 s--versionand 10 sdebug modelsdeadlines that kill the child and destroy its stdout, plus a 45 s overall race. #7107 removed that cold load, and this PR removes the remaining eviction by the launcher's runtime. The failure hasn't recurred since and passed 50/50 locally under load, so I left the test unchanged. One caveat: the log has no phase timing, so the cold-load attribution is the best supported explanation, not a measurement. Upstream oven-sh/bun#44581 says the Bun 1.4.0spawnSyncexit-loss bug fixed in #6986 does not affect Windows, so that is not the cause.Verification
