@coderabbitai review Updated head: Both repeat-review findings are fixed and their threads resolved with implementation/validation details:
Fresh validation: 113 affected-graph tests and 189 ACL tests passed; the two signal cases also passed with default Bun options. Typecheck, privacy, structure, file-size and whitespace checks passed. Independent four-file review found no issues. The existing full-suite exception and native-Windows validation gap remain documented in Verification. On the new head the current CodeRabbit success status says “Review skipped: draft pull request”, so it is not evidence of a fresh review. Please review the new delta manually. The retained 56.67% docstring warning does not list uncovered functions; please identify any specific missing production contract documentation rather than requesting redundant test-callback comments. Hygiene, labels and enforce-target have successful runs on the new head. No product-test CI success is available: previous-head Cross-platform CI / Catalog async contracts / React Doctor require fork-workflow approval. This contributor has no upstream maintain/write permission to approve them. PR remains draft pending product CI and maintainer security review. |

Reviewed the full 19-file diff at a2bc3e84db086812a6ee14801b3b5982abd4ac50, including the credential-free preflight boundary, fresh socket/owner proof, one shared recovery budget, metadata allowlist, bounded queue/rotation and shutdown drain. I approved the three existing ordinary fork workflow runs after separate execution-trust review. That is not a technical/readiness approval.
Independent Bun 1.4.3 / Linux validation under isolated homes and the bounded cgroup produced 254 passed / 3 platform skips / 1 failed across the ten affected integration/layout files. Repeating that same batch reproduced the same failure:
tests/clients/link-diagnostics.test.ts:205, “Windows diagnostic appends reuse ACLs only until the file or its permissions change”: after the chmod-to-0400 / chmod-back-to-0600 pair and append, expect(grants).toBe(3) receives 2. Running that test alone passes (1 passed / 8 assertions). This establishes a batch-sensitive test failure; it does not establish a native Windows permission vulnerability or the precise cause.
Please make the permission/freshness transition deterministic (the existing ACL stat-reader seam can explicitly prove that the observed freshness changed), retain the replacement/permission-change assertions, and verify both isolated and normal affected-file execution. Do not clear this by removing the third-grant assertion or merely extending an unrelated timeout. The exact current-head hosted CI and native platform coverage remain separate requirements; skipped platform cases are not acceptance evidence.

@Ingwannu addressed in fe19493. The existing Bun 1.4.3 verification, using the isolated test, full diagnostic file and the same ten-file wrapper batch (commands/results added to the PR description):
Native Windows coverage and hosted CI for the new head remain separate requirements; platform skips are not acceptance evidence. The full suite was not repeated for this one-test follow-up, and earlier broad-suite limits remain documented. |
Withdrawing my prior batch-sensitive ACL-test blocker: the exact follow-up makes observed freshness deterministic without removing grant/replacement assertions; independent current-head ten-file batch now passes 255 tests with 3 platform skips. This does not approve the full PR or waive current-head CI/native coverage.

Re-reviewed the complete follow-up delta at fe19493e3d5c2ef82606a00e625bd6adb83552a0: only tests/clients/link-diagnostics.test.ts changed from the previously reviewed a2bc3e84db. The stat seam keeps real device/inode data, explicitly changes observed ctimeNs after the chmod round trip, retains the replacement and third-grant assertions, and resets the seam in finally.
Independent bounded Bun 1.4.3 / Linux re-run of the same ten-file batch from my prior review: 255 passed / 3 platform skips / 0 failed, 1,601 assertions. Files: link-diagnostics, client-link-relay, link-relay-bound-transport, client-link-tunnel, client-runtime, client-link-runtime, client-machine-listener, port-reclaim, test-layout and test-layout-tooling. My prior ACL test blocker is therefore withdrawn/dismissed. This is scoped verification of that fix, not native Windows validation or whole-branch approval. The previously approved workflow runs were for the old head; current-head CI execution and results are separate.
Return admission verdict and ownership metadata together, remove the boolean ownership injection and observer side channel, and keep routine successful owner checks silent. Drain bounded private diagnostics before handled shutdown or standalone recycle. Adapt behavioral fixtures and cover silent success, diagnostic-independent recovery, and bounded shutdown persistence.
Refresh the existing Windows ACL memo only for the verified file object after closing a diagnostic append. Cover repeated writes, file replacement and later permission changes, and give signal shutdown regressions an explicit watchdog timeout.
Preserve queued link diagnostics when the new client restart path exits. Extend shutdown persistence coverage through the authenticated restart endpoint and document the shared bounded drain.
Use the existing stat-reader seam to change permission freshness independently of host filesystem timestamp resolution. Preserve real file identity, replacement coverage, chmod operations, third-grant assertion, and seam cleanup.
Update the upstream Home outage fixture to return a matching LinkAdmissionResult so authentication refusal still exercises the link_relay_auth_failed boundary after rebase.

Carried onto the latest The follow-up PR builds on the bounded
The follow-up includes Refs #7297. Carried onto current dev in #7560. |
Summary
Remote Link currently collapses a failed local owner lookup and an expired credential-free relay authentication preflight into
503 {"error":"link tunnel unavailable"}. A transient deadline rejects the turn even when a fresh proof and connection would succeed, and the response does not identify the refusal branch.LinkAdmissionResultcontaining admission kind and timing/check/generation metadata. Relay recovery reads that result directly; diagnostic callbacks cannot supply policy decisions. The supervisor has one typedinspectLoopbackListenerdependency and fences stale asynchronous results. The existing standalone boolean OS helper remains for its consumers. A Darwinlsofexit 1 with strictly empty output is classified as no match, rather than an inspection error.link/diagnostics.jsonlwith one rotated backup, each bounded to 256 KiB. The async writer retains at most 56 queued records plus one active write, yields during Windows ACL work, and rate-limits fixed event/outcome buckets with suppression counts. Only whitelisted metadata is persisted; no raw errors, credentials, headers, bodies, URLs, hostnames or account/link identifiers. Relay-generated 503s receive a generatedx-opencodex-link-request-id; correlation is sampled rather than a complete trace. Routine successful owner checks are silent; failures and recovery attempts are logged, and successful retry response headers emitrelay_recovered. Graceful signal shutdown and standalone recycle drain queued records for at most one second; stalled storage, forced termination or power loss can still lose evidence.Refs #7297. This is a bounded diagnostic/recovery slice; it does not implement the issue's full opt-in SSH debug interface or establish the cause of historical production failures.
Verification
On macOS arm64 with Bun 1.4.3, based on clean upstream
devat072e7fe540d7afd068154c57817ea3334d9df1bf:process.emit; native OS signal delivery and SIGHUP are not separately verified. The owner-deadline regression was observed failing before the recovery change. Prepublication anti-slop and behavioral-test review also found and fixed a regression where a prefetched oversized upload became 503 on auth timeout; its test failed with 503 before the catch-order correction and now preserves 413 without a retry. Added assertions reject false recovery after upstream 500 and distinguish auth duration from owner-check duration in retry/failure diagnostics.bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan, bun run structure:check, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts, andgit diff --check: passed.cd docs-site && bun run build: passed, 585 pages / 83,071 checked internal links. Existingsshconfighighlighting warnings remain.bun run test:changed: 35,275 passed, 74 skipped, 6 failed across 1,595 files (473.6 seconds). This is not a green broad-suite result. Five failures concern existing Codex/Bun discovery and launcher fallback expectations. A separate clean worktree at the same upstreamdevreproduced exactly those five failures; the final PR branch and clean baseline each returned 161 passed, 3 skipped, 5 failed for:Architecture and diagnostic validation
The admission observer side channel and boolean ownership injection adapter were removed. Existing reconnect holds, generation/identity fencing, credential-free preflight and connection-bound data transport remain in place. No dependency, transport layer or restart mechanism was added. Independent architecture and adversarial correctness/test reviews cover the simplified design.
CodeRabbit discussion
4340084543is resolved: backward wall-clock adjustments reset both ordinary and full-queue diagnostic windows while preserving suppression counts. Regressions retain that behavior, upload-limit 413 precedence, fresh sockets/nonces, and one data dispatch after the real five-second silent-peer timeout. The bounded writer remains best effort, not a lossless audit log.On final head
1bba1dc11, the originalbun run test:changedreturned 35,297 passed, 74 skipped, 7 failed and 1 error across 1,595 files. A subsequent controlled comparison ran the same 1,594 common files sequentially on clean detached upstream base072e7fe540d7afd068154c57817ea3334d9df1bfand the unchanged PR head. Both used Bun 1.4.3, the stock wrapper (--isolate --parallel=4), matching frozen-installed dependencies, a common inherited environment snapshot, fresh isolated test homes, and the host test-run lock. Only the new PR-only diagnostics file was excluded from both selections; manifest SHA-256:c06e98fde11176919a75639b92cfc69f0b1930f07a9ff90df1e89ae912134053. The original run's--changedselection was replaced with that explicit shared manifest so the two trees exercised identical files.072e7fe541bba1dc11All five original Codex/Bun discovery/launcher failures reproduced on both trees. The first runtime failure was isolated with a throwaway probe: it selects the host-installed Codex despite an empty PATH, and returns the expected fallback when only the fixed installed-root probes report ENOENT. The second runtime failure is consistent with the same installed-runtime preference, but was not separately traced at dispatch. The three launcher fixtures accidentally resolve Bun from an ancestor
node_modules; upstream already fixed their fixture ancestry in #7466. A focused run on fresh clean upstreamdevat79fa3506628da65bcd599a2890f13d1cbb4a2f20confirmed those three launcher failures disappear; the two host-dependent runtime assertions remain (166 passed, 3 skipped, 2 failed, four files). The original Copilot replay and Daybreak compact failures passed in both wide controls and in three further paired repetitions of these four files:
Each baseline repetition returned 274 passed, 23 skipped, 0 failed. PR repetitions returned 273/23/1, 274/23/0, and 274/23/0: the one failure was a different five-second shim auto-restore timeout. The controlled wide runs also had non-overlapping additional failures: four on the base, versus a shim timeout and two retained-reasoning stream failures plus a late assertion on the PR. The latter stream cases passed in all six focused repetitions. Source review found no direct activation of the changed relay/diagnostic behavior in those provider/compact scenarios; diagnostics have no import-time writer or timer. This does not exclude indirect scheduling/resource effects from the larger PR test set. The original Daybreak 400 body was not recorded, so its refusal branch remains unknown; the earlier separate loopback-policy 403 is not evidence for that 400's cause. These runs establish five baseline failures, not a green broad suite or blanket exclusion of PR involvement in the non-reproduced failures. No production code, test expectations, timeouts, or policies were changed during this comparison.
Current typecheck, privacy scan, structure check, file-size ratchet and whitespace checks passed. Conditional GUI lint skipped correctly because there are no GUI changes; no separate backend lint script is configured. Frozen docs installation and the final docs build passed (585 pages / 83,071 internal links). Independent architect and critic reviews found no remaining issues. The ten-file regression with coverage returned 255 passed, 1 platform skip, 0 failed; diagnostics achieved 100% function and line coverage within that targeted run (aggregate import coverage is not full-system coverage).
For previous head
1bba1dc11, GitHubenforce-target,hygiene,labelandresolve-prchecks passed; CodeRabbit explicitly skipped its review because the PR is draft. These checks do not establish product test CI or maintainer security approval. The branch base is three commits behind the observed upstreamdevtip (79fa35066); the PR remains draft.CodeRabbit follow-up validation
At head
1b964f07b, both findings from the repeat review of1390a38faare addressed:4341312121: Windows diagnostic appends reuse the existing identity-aware ACL memo after the append and handle close, with a bigint descriptor/path identity check and symlink rejection before close. File replacement or later permission changes still require fresh hardening. A regression first failed on the old code (two owner-grant sequences for two appends instead of one), then passed with the fix; it also covers replacement and subsequent permission changes. No pathname-only cache was added.4341312138: the SIGINT/SIGTERM diagnostic-drain subprocess tests now use the existingwatchdogMs(60_000)timeout, longer than the local watchdog for default/focused Bun invocations.Fresh validation on macOS arm64 / Bun 1.4.3:
Typecheck, privacy scan, structure check, file-size ratchet and whitespace checks passed. Independent review of the four-file delta found no issues and independently ran 26 relevant tests successfully. There is no configured backend lint; GUI lint is outside this delta. Native Windows behavior remains unverified: the Windows regression uses the existing synthetic runners on macOS. The full suite was not repeated for this bounded follow-up; the earlier controlled broad runs and their unresolved attribution limits above still apply.
GitHub CI inspected on
1390a38fa: Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts and React Doctor wereaction_requiredpending fork-workflow approval, not test failures. Hygiene and labels passed. Repeatedenforce-targetcancellations explicitly report supersedingpr-gate-comment-7491concurrency. Product CI on the new head is tracked separately; missing/approval-blocked runs are not passing evidence. This contributor account has no upstream write or maintain permission to approve runs. The PR remains draft pending product CI and maintainer security review.Rebase validation
Rebased the seven existing commits from
1b964f07bonto fresh upstreamdevata4f335c075f84b721f0122ae0534a4af81e86294. Current head:a2bc3e84db086812a6ee14801b3b5982abd4ac50. Conflict resolutions preserve the new per-serve/rollback supervisor lifecycle with diagnostic injection, and the upstream Child version/features report on the credential-free authentication challenge. The other five original commits replayed without content changes.Independent integration review found one new exit path: the bound restart introduced upstream could exit without draining queued diagnostics. The follow-up commit reuses the existing one-second bounded flush before that exit. A subprocess regression drives the real authenticated restart endpoint, substitutes only the replacement launcher, queues diagnostics at replacement confirmation, and checks persisted records after exit. Before the fix the child exited successfully but its diagnostic file was missing; afterward it passes. Signal shutdown and rollback/restart policy remain intact.
Fresh macOS arm64 / Bun 1.4.3 validation on this head:
The first sandboxed regression attempt could not read macOS process identity because
/bin/pswas denied, causing its exact-argv test to fail closed. The final command above ran with process-read access and passed that test. Typecheck, privacy scan, structure check, file-size ratchet and whitespace checks all passed. Independent review of the rebase resolutions and restart-drain delta passed; the reviewer independently reran all three shutdown-persistence cases. No backend lint is configured; GUI lint is outside the changed paths. Native Windows/Linux and new-head upstream product CI remain separate validation gaps. The full suite was not repeated for this rebase: the earlier paired broad runs already took about twenty minutes, and their documented failures/attribution limits remain applicable, not claimed fixed here. The PR gate may reset readiness after the rewritten head; old-head checks are not current-head CI evidence.Deterministic ACL regression follow-up
At
fe19493e3, addressed Ingwannu's review intests/clients/link-diagnostics.test.tsonly. The existingsetStatForTestsseam keeps realdev/inoand ordinary filesystem observations through append/replacement. After the real chmod pair, the target's observedctimeNsexplicitly changes by one tick, with unchanged-identity/changed-freshness assertions. Replacement coverage, both memo-reuse assertions and the third ACL-grant assertion remain. The seam resets infinally; no production changes, sleeps or timeout changes.Fresh Bun 1.4.3 validation:
oven/bun:1.4.3Podman container, with 4 GiB memory, 2 CPUs and 256 PID limits: isolated 1 passed, diagnostic file 9 passed. Ten-file batch 254 passed / 3 platform skips / 1 failed. The ACL case passed; the failure isan ended link recycles a connected sibling after listener cleanup, timing out waiting for recycle exit. It also fails in isolation. A control with the original test restored (the source tree at parent heada2bc3e84d, with matching dependencies and container limits) reproduces that same isolated failure. This excludes this test-only delta as its cause in this container; it does not establish its root cause or a green Linux batch. The full suite was not repeated for this bounded test-only follow-up; prior broad-suite failures and attribution limits above remain applicable. Native Windows and exact-new-head hosted CI/security approval remain separate requirements. Platform skips are not native-platform acceptance evidence.

The original nine commits are retained, plus one integration-test correction. Conflict resolutions insrc/client/link-relay.tsandstructure/remote-link.mdpreserve OCX-11's separatehome_unreachableandlink_relay_auth_failedresponses while retaining diagnostic correlation and the existing shared pre-dispatch recovery budget. client-home-unreachablefixture returned the old boolean verdict and therefore stopped before its authentication check. It first failed with 7 passed / 1 failed; updating that fixture to return{ kind: "match" }produced 8 passed / 0 failed, preserving every response assertion. The final rebase from the initially validated

Native Linux/Windows behavior and hosted CI/security approval for this new head remain separate requirements; platform skips are not acceptance evidence.
